Researchwd this bec I am a history nerd lol. The Mosuo tribe, in the Yunnan/Sichuan province in the south of China…
The Musuo people are fascinating! From what I've read, they don't have marriages per se. People live with their families in the matriarchal home. The genealogy is matrilineal, so it follows the mother's line not the father's. Men also stay in their matriarchal home. Women may invite a man to come visit them for the night in their homes.
i feel like i'm the only one enjoying this fully LMAO.
I am! Definitely! Providing you go in expecting a light, (pop) historical romcom, it delivers on every level. It's just what I needed right now to relax.
Haha thanks for clearing that up! I was confused because most people don't have kids age 13, wondered if I had missed some detail of the plot... My parents had an 17 year age gap lol! That'd shock the OP. I'd get the reaction if he was 50 and she was 25, but 13 years? It's fine. They're just acting anyway.
What a disappointment this drama has been so far. It's not bad as much as extremely mediocre. Terrible editing, bad direction, bad script. It fails to deliver on so many levels. The Yebei characters are dry and boring. They should have been abandoned after the beginning. The story focuses on boring parts of the story and cuts out the interesting bits. There is no growth or depth to the characters. Imo the two MLs delivered the most, PXR was a colossal disappointment. So vacuous. None of that depth and quality that her performance in Goodbye my Princess had... What a shame.
Unless you have literally nothing better to watch, don't waste your time.
I hope this will be a hit, Jeremy Tsui’s historical dramas have been mediocre/miss rather than hits….. he…
Have you seen him in Legend of Dugu? I thought he was exceptionally good. If only he did more dramas like that. Less fluff, more depth... And maybe with FLs who were a little more mature
I’m just waiting for these huge age gaps with kids in their early 20s being paired with 40 year olds to end…
Well, for that to happen, Chinese audiences have to be willing to see a 40 year old FL paired with said 40 year old ML.... The obsession with youth is problematic in C dramas. The hate campaign directed at Zhang Ziyi in The Rebel Princess is evidence of how narrowminded many people are about age. 99% of dramas are leads in their early 20s. I would like to see more age diversity not less.
Hello, I'm just curious how such low terms = high number rating.. ie, "uninteresting", "nothing special", etc…
Underrated gems tend to hide in the 7.9 or 8.1 range. Some genres often get lower ratings e.g. historical and wuxia. The key is to find out why they got the lower ratings. Sometimes it is very unjust like an antifan campaign based on something trivial. Maybe a role was originally cast as one actor, but they changed it, or one of the leads is a bit older (Chinese audiences worship youth), or in their opinion not anorexic looking enough. I will check the comments for this kind of bias.
I used to watch 7.5s as well, but I got too frustrated by how bad they were, so I tend to watch higher quality dramas with better ratings.

I hear what you're saying but it depends on the site... Here we tend to stay between the 7-10 range lol. According to my observations of ratings on MyDramalist, anything under a 7.5 is terrible (an unwatchable catastrophe), a 7.5 is watchable but bad or low quality. If a drama has finished airing and is 7.5, I wouldn't bother. An 8 is watchable/ok (or an underrated gem). There are a few underrated gems hiding in the 7.9/8 category.
Anything over 8 is good-ish. 8.5 is very good and over that is exceptionally good/excellent. Idol dramas are an exception to the rule because fans of specific actors may even create duplicate accounts and give 10s but that isn't for the drama but their obsessive adoration lol. Idol dramas are often heavily overrated.
This drama isn't bad, it just wasn't for me. It was too immature for my taste.
The EU is cracking down on illegal streaming sites so I don't want to take the risk. Also, the quality is much better on official sites, so I have paid for subscriptions and I'm determined to make the most out of my investment! :D
I do think it's unfair though that the airing dates on an online platform like Netflix for the same show should be different depending on your region.
Anyone in Europe know when this will come to Netflix? The first season started airing where I am much later so it will probably be the same again... Sigh.
This drama is SO GOOD. So many dramas end after the wedding or becoming Queen like that's it. I love that this drama chose to focus on an older Queen and that romance isn't the focus, and yet it is so engaging. Kim Hye Soo deserves a huge prize for her acting in this role. I also loved how they delicately they handled the trans prince. So moving.
