I thought Bad Buddy was more of anti-trope production than anything else - on that effect it was fantastically done.
To really appreciate the show you almost to have been exposed to the BL world 0f 19' 20' and 21' as the show has many scenes dedicated to ridiculing/calling out many previous productions way of doing things... THAT was the plot really.
I think the era of good Asian bls is over. Okay! Maybe it's in recess.
Right now there is an influx of new shows bc of how much attention BL gets - it makes money. In the past many shows made on a shoe string budget generated fair amounts of money and unfortunately many shows were/are made solely to "get rich quick" and that obviously doesn't make for a quality production. This is why it feels like there are "too many" new BLs - its not a quantity issue, its quality.
We wouldn't be complaining if 2023 had 50 shows released on the level of the "8th Sense" - we would watch them all eventually and be very happy about it. If we watch 50 meh shows of course we wouldn't want to invest that much of our time.
Now is when we'll start to see the studios and directors that actually want to make gay content rise to the top and finish redefining the genre. Eventually our tastes will be more refined and our expectations of quality much higher - we really won't watch crap, tropey, cash grab productions anymore. By monopolizing our attention the higher quality productions will become even more valuable - advertisers will be increasingly less likely to finance projects not made by well established studios/directors/writers/etc.

I really don't think it is ok anymore. I don't think it ever was. Do these same male actors have the same difficulty kissing women in other roles? Do Directors pander to their behavior in straight Korean drama to the extent we've seen in Korean BL?
How can an actor tell his girlfriend or wife that kissing a female co-star is strictly professional and for work but kissing a male co-star, professionally and for work, is different/uncomfortable. How can one matter and the other not?
It is an actors job to personify their characters to the best of their ability. Many Korean BLs obviously don't give anywhere near 100% effort regarding intimacy - everyone involved in these projects know that - it's only acceptable bc its gay content.
Can't have those Idols look too gay.

You are 100% right! It was that comment about the Thai industry that got me. I've been incredibly impressed with the adaptability and growth shown by the industry over the last 3-4 years. Everything has improved. The genre is becoming much more popular than I expected - this is still very early.
BL in Thailand is so competitive that with quality like this already I think the future looks very bright. The comments they be dropping about BL being Thailand's "soft power" are relevant - they are aware they have global attention. Thats why if you go back and watch a BL from 5-6 years ago they are night and day different bc its made for a different audience.

I understand your comment because you obviously haven't seen very many BL's out of Thailand recently and your opinion was far more valid 2-3 years ago than it is in 2023. The industry is really coming together for this genre - Thai BLs have seen such significant improvement, in such short a time, I can't quite stress enough how impressive it is.

A new Fujin 5 years from now will have so much content to catch up on - even if only the best past shows are watched. I expect 5 years from now there will generally be more BL than now. No 3.5 rated show would ever meet the thresh hold for viewing if I believed I would never be able to watch them all. I've removed shows from my watchlist for exactly this reason already - if someone thinks its that bad, can't be worth my time.

"Between Us" is proof the BL world is progressing and improving. If this show had been released early 2018, exactly as is and without UWMA for context or nostalgia, it would likely have been highly acclaimed with very little constructive criticisms or complaints - 90% of conversation would have focused on Ships and the timeless "Who is Uke/Seme?" debate.
Between Us is quite literally better than all but the most legendary BL shows released prior to 2019 - this is literally exactly what we thought a BL should look like circa 2020 and is far more polished.
BL is changing right now - moving beyond the traditional format and into something new. That is why this story, already told in 2020, feels a little off in 2023.
Not 3.5 off tho - not objectively at least.
More like a master landscape artist releases the best landscape painting of his career to date but the world moved onto modern art while he was painting, so his masterpiece was meh.
