Exactly as you said, lots of lazy writings and riding on fandom. Novel readers can accept if the adaptation changes make sense, however the lazy writings just made it so disappointing.
Some of the original script who actually focus on telling story are so much better, e.g “A dream within a Dream”.

I get what you mean. I kept reminding myself to stop comparing novel and drama so I can enjoy this better😅. Which I did.
I agreed with you, Chai An Xi’s betrayal reason is weak. He has served under General Xiao for many years and he is a soldier himself, it’s not really possible for him to suddenly betrayed his General for a small minsunderstanding as shown in drama🤦🏻‍♀️.
As for Chu Zhao, I am wondering the drama seems to be setting a redemption arc for him making him grey. In the novel, he feels more manipulative and truly uncaring of others except his goals.
For Xiao Jue, don’t get me started. lol. I am just going to say, I see XJ here is just different person from the novel, and I love both of them:).
