Ha ha my nemesis are dramas/movies that piss me off! I'm so damn petty when a drama/movie has great story, characters, and potential but someone fks it up midway! Unless the ending is epic it's immediately going to drama hell! It could still be better than average but I can't get past the betrayal ha ha ha! Eventually, it will probably get a 7-8 but for a few months your a GD 3!
My top five pet peeve list (aka you b@$+@#d screen writers):
1. It's not the size that counts! Dramas being shortened/extended (after broadcasting). There are few positive exceptions to this imho. Even if a drama is bad or mediocre ending early often kills any chances of a solid satisfying conclusion. I've rewatched more not so great dramas with satisfying (not necessarily happy) endings. Over mostly great dramas with horrible endings. So it kills me when they just give up.
The same with extending. I'm not opposed to second seasons or even a movie/web special supplementation but extending popular drama almost always sucks. Being extended often either drags out the storyline killing the often great pacing or it actually shortens the original story ending to start on a second ending. You're temporarily happy because it delayed your post drama depression but it can leave you feeling less satisfied. To much of a good thing?
2. When inception meets extra! Everything but the kitchen sink dramas are definitely entrend. I've noticed the past few years a lot of dramas adding a huge amount of sub storylines instead of the usual one or two. I'm not really talking about action where there seems to be going on but more of having too many sub characters with their own storylines or a lead character with a ton of gimmicks/storylines (especially back storylines). I really understand the writer's perspective of wanting to add all their great ideas or they use multiple gimmicks/storylines to give the illusion of story depth to the main story or simply just quick filler/plot advancement. Whatever the reasoning it often turns sour fast. Especially in Kdramas that are film while broadcasting to much often causes inconsistency in the main storylines, can cause a show to drag or take away from the main storyline, causes unnecessary confusion, hinders character development, spoils natural story flow with tmi, causes unsatisfying loose ends, etc. There are a lot of shows i think have great ideas but bad execution and its usually because of to many gimmicks/storylines.
3. Omg! I have OSDS! (obscure sounding disease syndrome) Lazy plot devices/wasted potential. Half of every cliché pet peeves stems from this reason. Especially when it is medical or legal I never understood why they just don't take the extra 15 minutes to research. There are a lot of RL conditions/situation that actually would make more sense and add more interest to many storylines. There is also an added benefit when drawing attention to RL conditions/situations. To me there is nothing more cringe worthy than using a plot device with no attempt to understand the real condition/situation behind it. Especially medical and legal or just a big part of the main storyline. Why?! WHY!
4. WTF did I just watch?! Identity Crisis. When you're watching a light and fluffy drama and suddenly everything gets way melodramatic. Or you have great action and pacing but suddenly everything stalls on romance, politics, etc. I'm definitely not saying have to be all any of one category! I'm really talking about dramas that fail at being able to tell a story without compartmentalizing themes. I've debated dropping more dramas for this reason than any other, even bad acting or no chemistry! Multiple themes and cross genres can be epic as long as you get a good balance with a clear vision of story, otherwise you're bipolarity might be showing!
5. Oh no she didn't! Nonsensical character development just sucks! Actually i use the term "development“ very loosely because most nonsensical character personality deviation happens abruptly. Be it for love or betrayal nothing is more face palm worthy than seeing a character off the rails for no apparent reason. I often lump this with the lazy cliché category too because in most cases it's the easy way to get from point a to b without putting in any work. Consistency and integrity is that to much to ask for?!
Aside from all the negative above major kudos to those crazy jerks for some of the best, most out of the box stories and characters out there! If anyone can turn a sow's ear into a silk purse it's an Asian drama writer! ????
Bu Ja..presently Zombie..Bu Ja..previously Se Ra..Bu Ja..current Asanyeo..wait..is she going to be sam jung now…
After the preview I'm extremely curious! She doesn't seem like the old Bu Ja though it seems Ahsanyeo's in Sun Mi's body. So is it Bu Ja with her soul under Ahsanyeo's command? Is it an illusion all together to keep everyone from suspecting she is in Sun mi's body? Is it the Summer Fairy? They show Sun mi in the coffin and looks like Oh Gong searching for her still. I kind of think it would be amazing if it were Summer fairy especially if she could nail it! But I'm probably over thinking and it will turn out to be nothing ha ha!
After thinking about it I think I've figured it out a theory and am more confused! ???????????? So let's suppose…
My understanding is that the storyteller collected children's souls so took the child portion of Sun Mi's soul that made the protection contract, could see supernatural beings, and released oh gong so had received the punishment of Sam Jang. The remaining adult part created the pact with the bracelet so she didn't lose it when she gave up the child portion of her soul. So that set the precedence that the supernatural things are soul attached not bodily. Also the lotus scent of Sam Hang blood, why would it switch in episode 14 if it was body related?
Tbh I'm just over all the vague gimmick magical props ha ha. The bell, the bracelet, the ring, the censer, etc, etc. I'm pretty much keeping in for the fluffy comedy romance aspects and that I've made it this far ha ha ha! It is what it is :)
I thought they established that the Sam Jang, the special ability to see supernatural stuff, the contract with…
After thinking about it I think I've figured it out a theory and am more confused! ???????????? So let's suppose given all the details that Sun Mi already switched souls with Asanyeo but kept their consciousness and bodies. That explains why they swapped scents and Sun mi got Asanyeo's powers. But then for that to make sense Asanyeo would have to be Sam Jang/Sun Mi. But why didn't anyone notice, wouldn't that have transferred everything Oh Gong over also? If Bu ja's corpse minimized powers like Asanyeo said and Sam Jang was weakened they still would sense the difference and Oh Gong wouldn't be bound to Sun Mi anymore? I can't even start with the Geumganggo! If she is now Asanyeo would the Geumganggo be active? If she is Asanyeo she wouldn't be able to call Oh Gong anyway because isn't the thing that requires him to come when she called the contract? Or does the Geumganggo have that power as well? Sort of redundant right! And then we go back to if she isn't Sam Jang she couldn't hear the death bell. So the nobel sacrifice thing makes less sense. I suppose if this is the route they are going I pray they don't have Asanyeo with Sun Mi's soul come back in her body. And have Sun Mi come back with Asanyeo's soul in Bu Ja's body! Watching them try to act each other ugh! So if this is plausible then I hope they go back in their original bodies. If what Asanyeo said is true also that would make Sun mi as Asanyeo in her body more powerful, free from the Sam Jang burden, possibly still attached to oh gong via the Geumganggo (which without being Sam Jang doesn't need the bracelet) without the death fate? And if she doesn't have the power of the Geumganggo something tells me that would be the point of the ring. Since he gave her the ring and they did their little vow/oath after the soul switching started. So he is probably bound to her either way I suppose. But that goes back to if she doesn't have the power of the bracelet or contract how could she call him unless it's something to do with the ring?! I told you it's more confusing and I need an aspirin. Get rid of some of the prop gimmicks please!
I *know* this drama is far from perfect...I know all it's faults. Am I weird that I still love it anyway? I'm…
Ha ha I was thinking the same thing last night. There is so much nonsensical stuff, lapse in logic and over the top antics with some pretty bad production missteps but it's fun. Tbh I get the same vibe as You're Beautiful which is one of my favorite dramas for iconic sweet and fuzzy moments and chaotic fun. (Probably because it's the Hong Sisters and they are best at coming up with some of the most heart fluttering romance scenes in dramas imho) The critique part of me won't be able to review it high but the fangurl in me will probably rewatch it for the swoony fluffy parts unless the ending is horrible.
I thought they established that the Sam Jang, the special ability to see supernatural stuff, the contract with Oh Gong and the bracelet were attached to her soul not her body? So if Shaman chick switches souls with her wouldn't that give he Sun Mi's body not Sam Jang? I mean Sam Jang is supposed to be a punishment on Sun mi right? From the princess Iron Fan storyline it's also pretty clear punishment follows the soul. It also begs to question how is Bu Ja's body soul less? They keep hinting from PK she is still there. It seems to me that it would have made more sense if they would have had the Shaman possess Sun Mi's body with her soul still inside and suppressed it somehow.
Another thing. She didn't hear the bell ring when she lost the Sam jang part of her soul. But as soon as she got it back heard the death bell. So my question is the death fate between her and Oh Gong or Sam Jang and Oh Gong? If they actually ignore everything I said above and the Shaman becomes Sam Jang wouldn't that mean there is a high probability Oh Gong is in danger anyway? It seems like the most nonsensical nobel sacrifice storyline tbh. I'm guessing the ring and what she said about coming to protect him will come into play but honestly if the bond of the ring follows her soul but nothing else I will quit trying to understand I'll just watch for the fluffy, heart fluttering stuff with no expectations. The rules of the bracelet already give me a headache ha ha.
I see where you are coming from, but he already knows how he feels.. he's not stupid, He knows he loves her madly,…
1) He isn't a deity. He doesn't care about humanity bracelet on or off (or pretends not to care) He doesn't know for sure how he feels or if it's the bracelet. Hence the comments about suspecting he'd feel the same way he did without it on. But he really doesn't know for sure. He doesn't even appear to know if he would stay by her side if she removed the bracelet, that is why He keeps warning her. We know he wouldn't kill her, we know he loves her because we see everyone as a viewer they can't see. If he was having the thoughts you suggest he wouldn't need the bracelet. It doesn't give him super powers and the contract already connects them. I think he probably needs the bracelet because he doesn't trust himself but I think it would be better if he chose it himself.
2) I don't think he really wants to take the bracelet off. But I think the death bell has him off balance. That is why I said She should take the bracelet off. Oh Gong knows his nature better than anyone. He knows he is selfish but if he really loves her (eternally like you said) and doubts himself he can put the bracelet back on himself. Then it becomes a choice not a forced obligation.
3) What is the purpose of the bracelet? It is supposed to keep him from killing/eating her and requires him to do what she needs. The love part was just something that was supposed to help make him obedient/faithful. However, she said a few episodes back she wasn't scared of Oh Gong hurting her anymore. Her comment why she didn't take it off suggests that the reason is because she needs him to finish the mission. But at the same time now she knows it physically hurts and can kill him she doesn't want to call him or make him do anything he doesn't want to do. So what is left after that except that she would be affraid he won't love her anymore. That seems like a nonsensical reason to risk someone's life because you love them but can't honestly say that they love you back. That would make her character cruel and selfish. Whereas she is supposed to be selfless and naively kind.
4) How do you know it is a risk? Maybe it is fated for her to remove the bracelet? Maybe the reason the bracelet wasn't to make him an obedient slave but force him to face another aspect of his self that can care for others. Maybe whatever trust issues from the past caused him to loose that part of himself. My understanding is they need his power for whatever lies ahead. It's clear the bracelet is weakening him so that seems contrary to the purpose. If it's his choice and it's a purpose he is willing to sacrifice everything for that would make him stronger. Also if wearing the bracelet is his choice it would lessen the pain and potential death risk because he would honestly trust her. For all we know not removing the bracelet and allowing him free will to choose to obey could lead to destruction of the world.
5)Nothing I say matters because the writer's are gods of their own story ha ha! I'm sure the bracelet will stay and they probably will find some other way to accomplish the annoying loose ends. This is just my obnoxiously overly opinionated perspective.
If no one can get to Sureomdong unless Oh Gong calls how did Ma Wang get there before?
Are we back at square one relationship wise?! Ugh! I really wish they had taken off the stupid bracelet. Even for a few episodes it would have been nice! After episode 10 I was so excited that they appeared to be on the same page relationship and mission wise. It would have been great if they had her take off the bracelet after she found out it could kill him. Then it would give you an episode or two of him deciding what he really wants and how he feels. Then they could always add a twist where he volunteers to put the bracelet back on knowing the risk. Maybe because he doesn't trust his nature. Also because it's a bond they need to complete the mission and the only way he can guarantee her safety. She doesn't have to know about the death bell, and he decides that even if he dies if it's because of her it's ok. Thus ending the guilt trip, pity party, and finally clarify that their love is tragic but freaking honest! Then they could keep the stupid bracelet and introduce the shaman twist. This wishy-washiness omg!
Ha ha oh well I really hope that after the shaman is dealt with zombie gets a happy ending. I am still head over heels for a zombie/pig love story!
Ok so ep 10 was amazing! I love LSG kiss scenes! I just love this couple and how they fight to the death then…
I wonder who is going to be more devastated her or Oh Gong? I'm so curious how it will play out. If when she finds out she doesn't tell him and push him away with another excuse to spare his feelings?(Making him feel hurt and betrayed ) Would she hide it and be optimistic that it is a mistake and look for an answer on her own to try to change fate?(Which seeing the preview for 11 looks like might be the case) Or does she tell him when he asked or he find out on his own? Can you imagine if you find out that you could be the cause of the person you loves death like omg? Ah! So many possibilities!
has anyone noticed the major plot hole in the episodes this week? jin sun mi could see ghosts even before becoming…
I'm guessing if they had a supernatural/spiritual basis for it I'd go with soul splitting/fracturing as my first guess. The part of her soul represented by her child self was the person whom made the contract with Son Oh Gong, it was the part of her punished for rescuing him also. It was also the part with Supernatural abilities (im guessing because the punishment of becoming Sam Jang allowed her to keep those powers after becoming an adult.) But the bracelet was a bond made by the adult part of her soul. My theory is (if you buy into soul splitting) her soul was pulled into the book also, but unlike the young kids with only a complete soul to give she only left the child part of her soul so could leave. The reason she could return to her body was probably because she wasn't tricked into dying like the children so had a body to return too. I also have to think that the otherworldly bond between Sun mi and Oh gong probably had a lot (not sure how since we don't know everything yet) to do with her survival. Just my theory though.
But to be fair it is a kdrama so ha ha. Lapse in logic and nonsensical coincidences/plot devices are pretty par for the course especially in older dramas (which this definitely has a retro rom com feel).
The first episodes were great, then I started to doubt it between 3-5 but now it just totally back on the rise…
I wonder if it's because of different directors? I didn't care for episode 7 because it was messy, abrupt and sort of confusing. But tonight the whole episode was great, and felt like a complete story that flowed together. Maybe this is causing the weird inconsistency issues?
So I know they added extra directors at the beginning right? So my question is are they splitting scenes or episodes. Episode seven was all over the place with the story and confusing. Everything felt abrupt and didn't flow together very well. But Episode Eight felt like a complete story beginning to end. I'm starting to wonder if the weird inconsistency is because of directors? Am I crazy? Is anyone else noticing a difference in different episodes?
I don't think giving up the wish is because of the bracelet. He already told her he doesn't care about what she…
Sorry for long reply: l 'll agree to disagree about the power of the bracelet. My impression is that just like Oh Gong has said he doesn't want to be intrested in her interests, doesn't want to be involved with her really, that he's a prisoner but *holds out wrist* he loves her so he is compelled too. To be fair the whole power of the bracelet has played out pretty inconsistently in the story so how much resistance he actually has is pretty subjective. I guess the reason I have issues with it is because he is so freaking brutal about how he is forced to do everything against his will. Most likely it's not entirely true and he's using it as an excuse but then he does stuff like use her as bait and set Ma Wang up to kill her. All the while lying, scheming, and manipulating her. It's frustrating and confusing.
I actually really wanted them to kiss and really loved the wish concept I'm just really bummed about the build-up and execution. I actually wish they had made them separate episodes. Oh Gong sacrificing something he desperately wants anonymously shows a really beautiful sincerity and swoon worthy romantic! Unfortunately, for me at least, because of all the lying stuff I mentioned (especially the tried to kill, used as bait part) and the current betrayal storyline involving his past it felt like an unnatural choice. The wish concept could have worked great with the grandmother's memorial episode to make the sacrifice less a stretch. If you add scenes of him wavering like he did making excuses not to freeze the bracelet it would have felt like a more natural conclusion.
And then have a full episode about the director, fate, jealousy, kiss next. Oh Gong would probably start off in serious denial and regret at his impulsive choice of giving up the wish. Then add in situations hinting at emerging feelings of jealousy. If he would have found out about the director and Sun Mi a little sooner it could have been really funny. Especially to watch him stew over what is going to happen, offer his own disapproval, and fish for where he ranks between them (like the group chat ha ha) so that when she meets the producer the kiss feels 100% sincerely jealousy inspired. Instead of like he has to because if she falls for the director he will be forced to suffer because of the bracelet. It would also feel less selfish if he was doing it from sincere jealousy.
When I said the kiss was like an assault I didn't mean an actual physical assault. Sun mi is so submissive and in love with Oh Gong though denies it. I honestly think he could kiss her, push her down the stairs and she'd be more concerned about the kiss than attempted murder. What I meant, and poorly conveyed, is how it was more ill will induced than the sweet romantic sentiment I was longing for! To be honest I love fluffy, cute, heart fluttering, romantic comedy. Jerk tsundere types are probably my most favorite dramas I rewatch. (Writing this as I rewatch Nodame Cantabile for the hundredth time) Most people can probably overlook everything I mentioned and just be excited for the prospect of sweet romantic escalation, but it's an insanely big stretch for me. The romance was feeling forced before because of the whiplash level of back and forth. All of the content smooshed willy nilly in episode 7 about broke my neck ha ha! So many characters, so many storylines happening without reason. The implied betrayal contract if it was legit or not he'd still hold her to it especially since she said she definitely wouldn't ever. It's a lot of alot!
I don't know with the others, but I think the reason why I enjoyed this more than I'd expected are all of those…
A lot of us critique because we care and are actually invested in the drama ha ha. I've been waiting awhile for this drama, love the Hong sisters, love the actors. I personally enjoy reading constructive criticism because it often mirrors my own feelings. Also you never know maybe someone has a better insight that could change your perception. I try to be honest and fair with my comments. Usually if I write multiple "critical" comments over time it's more about venting frustration for aspects of a show I enjoy. I usually won't waste my time getting into discussions about shows I don't like.
My general opinion is the show is a mess, but it is a fun mess! For a Hong sisters series I was expecting crazy, dark humor, weird, pervy, etc but tbh it's really not the same quality of all the above you expect from them hence the critical commentary. Other people come her to read the good and bad insight to decide if they want to watch or continue a show. Positive or negative I always appreciate detailed opinions more instead of blanket I liked it or it sucks comments when trying to decide to pick up something that has oddly high or extremely low reviews. Just my insight though :)
Wtf this show ha ha! I officially think they need to quit wasting time on the contrived ghost/demon storylines. Just use the one of the many already existing characters to introduce info instead. Yes, she has to fulfill her obligation to Ma Wang but they can have brief scenes of Oh Gong finishing off evil spirits, or Sun mi sending them off to heaven, and move on.
Imho the ending kiss sucked! Tbh they spent the whole episode explaining how Oh Gong doesn't trust her, how he is still lying too and manipulating her, and even the giving up the wish/fantasy seems more like something done because of the insincere love compulsion.
On the flip side they spent the rest of the episode setting up her meeting someone who seems genuine, appears to have loved her since childhood, and was drawn to her like fate before he knew who she was.
So there is no hint of real love or even insight that Oh Gong kiss is protecting her from the director. So his motive is as always selfish and feels more like assault in context than something swoon worthy! SMH!
Also did they add yet another character, the Prince, as the zombie's love rival? *facepalm* Plus another extremely vague contract involving betrayal. TBH I spent the rest the episode wondering how he was setting her up to betray him because of it. Ha ha so fk'd up for a romantic comedy!
I agree 100% about the bracelet. They're framing these ~moments~ as swoon-worthy when right now it's based on…
I've said the same about the sfx from the first episode. Also it's probably not going to be a top ten but maybe in the guilty pleasure list for times I want crazy, nonsensical fluffy romance.
As for the bracelet I wouldn't hate it so much if the characters were different and had better condition attached. I'm not a big fan of magic love spell. Maybe if they had given him a frozen or stone heart where he never experienced love before. And added some sort of conditions unknown immediately to the leads like it only works if there is at least a small amount of sincerity in loving each other. But Sun mi would need to be a stronger character. Ha ha then the whole pain of love would be funnier because it's not meant to torture him as much as it would humanize him more. Especially if you made him dislike humans in general. He could experience love, empathy, etc She could be the first human he admired/respected and he could be the first person (other than grandma) she became close too. Ha ha or something :D
Is it only who don't like Woo Ma Wong as a character as well as his acting? Can't help but skip his scenes even…
Ha ha I'm pretty sure it's an intentional borderline cringe-e-ness! I just imagined the director said "Okay be as extra as possible!" After that it was a lot more fun to watch! :'D
I agree 100% about the bracelet. They're framing these ~moments~ as swoon-worthy when right now it's based on…
I liked when they first met how she basically told him to step off that she was fine without him all this time, which was a huge blow to his massive ego. I really wish they had stuck with that direction. Even if they wanted her to be internally lonely and insecure if she would have resisted his help because more of pride instead of the stupid guilt angle it would have been better. Ha ha to be honest fifty shades of crazy looks like relationship goals compared to what they are trying to sell us on this relationship. I tried to explain their relationship to my hubby and he said it sounded like the introduction to some weird porno bwa ha ha!

Ha ha oh well I really hope that after the shaman is dealt with zombie gets a happy ending. I am still head over heels for a zombie/pig love story!
But to be fair it is a kdrama so ha ha. Lapse in logic and nonsensical coincidences/plot devices are pretty par for the course especially in older dramas (which this definitely has a retro rom com feel).
l 'll agree to disagree about the power of the bracelet.
Ha ha or something
:D
