Just the idea of crossdressing FL with full make up on, feminine face, tiny body that hardly has any trace of sport but fitness, and if all that is not enough, her breasts are literally pointing at ML while he talks to her, and then these supersmart ML generals still are only suspicious of something else. Like seriously?
I need to dumb down to much to follow the plot.

The first logical thought when seeing female general crossdressing and pretending to be a male would be really worrisome. Female person would get beaten a lot at training sessions, to the point where putting such a person to the battle ground would be homocidal and endangering the batalion.
It makes FL look stupid for doing that, not smart.
And MLs look even dummer for not realising the obvious.

Like it's ok few episodes like in Long Ballad, or even better when at first contact ML realises like in Wonderland of Love, and then he uses the idea to make the most out of situation, help her goal and have few laughs.

I don't wanna ruin it for you guys who can still enjoy the plot. I was just curious, if someone feels the same.
I would like to find a strong powerful FL drama, who is not crossdressing. Who is herself. And uses strength that is typical for female build. Skills, agility, speed. Not raw strength what you need in combat and handling heavy armour.

fourth lady and her husband are so cute, I wished a show for just two of them and their love story. I usually hate amnesia plots but theirs was good, which means they are good actors, they made chemistry out of shi**y plot.

very good acting, they all have main character vibes and bright future ahead. Especially WXY, he is outstanding in all of his work.

I dropped the drama after 2 episodes for all those things you nicely explained here.

In short, this is a Chinese version of Little Women. I like it. It is a nice relaxing watch. FLs and MLs are all superstars in their delivery.
WXY is definitely a lead and the reason I watched this. And his performance confirms it.
and when it comes to FLs, the fifth daughter in the last few episodes really confirms as the true FL of the drama.
And the best couple chemistry is definitely forth daughter and her husband. They are so real and sweet :)

Often I see a drama with FL posing as a man, wearing mens clothes, and ML still falls for her, inspite of initially thinking she is a man, the romance begins. And when its finally discovered she is a female MLs be like: "Great. She is a girl. I was attracted to her from the beginning anyway".

That's confusing. Those MLs should probably consider their feelings deeper.

Ofcourse, it is alway visible she is a woman. Not just very feminine face, and make up, but also, you can see female build, chest are breasts. So also, thats another part where we should play along with stupid.

Is it just me? Or to you that looks convincing? Or you are so into plot that these things can't distract you from the main premise.

Yes!! I'n my opinion, best romance scenes, so playful, and so well aligned with characters and plot.

I finished it recently, and still come back to rewatch my favorite scenes. When she took his kiss during that game a front of everyone, yet hidden behind the falling curtain. What a moment :)

Also, costumes. Can people from China immediately tell difference which dynasty it is just by the costume,

I noticed only 2 different costumes for women. One is with bandage over the bust, and the other one is V neck folded dress.
Their hairstyles differ a lot though.

And for men, I can hardly tell anything. I notices purple and red are for the court, bright colors for rich, plain colors for poor. Red for the wedding, white for the mourning. Black for military/martial arts people. Gray for priests,
But the style itself I can not differentiate.

Please remove Bai Lu from profile picture while being this rude. Shen Yue is definitely not ugly. There are different kind of beautiful. Rose, orchid, dandelions,... And it is ok if you don't like it. But people have emotions, and only thing ugly about people can be their character when they don't respect other individuals.

I also, think 2001 version has better FL performance. But you never know, maybe that's how she was instructed. She can not choose on her own how character will develop. She can contribute it. And in my opinion 2001. FL is just superb at this script. But FL actress from this version is really good at other dramas. So I wouldn't say its her fault.

Also, ML is wow. Hard to shine next to such a hot guy. In all his dramas his presence is captivating. Even when he co-stars with Bai Lu which (Only for Love), she couldn't take over. And I adore Bai Lu. I rewatched all her dramas.

So when criticising, try to watch dramas that help you gain some healthy critic from it. If it is absolute no for you then just drop drama, don't bad mouth people. Young people are reading this forum and they could develop insecurities from reading such rude comments.

to me as a European, I try to see the difference, but I'm not really catching.
I noticed sometimes they have tall tables, sometimes those short. And I wonder, how did people back then sit at those short tables, and kneeling, after the age of 32. Like, that is painful. How do you study, write, eat, do anything.
I would have to be lifted and carried strait to orthopaedic surgeon.

oh no.. I haven't reached this episode yet. But I hate it when FL is so self-righteous she endangers herself, ML, and now even a baby.
Please tell me its someone else in the drama you're writing about and not FL.

On episode 19 currently.
I'm surprised the good dynamics Xiao Wei and his people have. Like they are 5 super capable men, with humor, good friendship, and fun POV on everything. I'm not usually fan of scenes where they discuss war strategy. But these guys are hilarious. I love how they talk everything. War, humor, love interests, friendship. They are total characters, not one dimensional obedient characterless pawns.
Which makes Xiao Wei even more interesting, to actually be so smart to be surrounded with great advisors, with different characters and talents united by good moral.
So enjoyable to watch. their friendship and problem solving.

In my opinion, this version has the most violent scenes. And ML is more layered, and it dives deeper in the character why he is like this, and that affects romance in the way drama had to show why they both fall in love no matter the obstacles. That kinda gives more power to the scenes when they are finally together, or when they argue. You value it more.

I think this is truest to original manga ML. And it is the excellence of this version that made me investigate more of this plot, and I watched other versions but they couldn't deliver on intensity of their teenage emotions rollercoaster.

FL is better in 2001 version. She nailed it.

So rude for people to behave like that.
Also, concerning (2), he is way to handsome, one of the most handsome actors for sure. if he doesn't feel comfortable then whats the hope for the rest of us :D
Besides, he was 19 in First Love, of course teenagers are thinner, later in life we get that adult dimensions.
