It's complicated. The production of Palace couldn't get the rights to the novel to which Scarlet Heart is based off. So he made his own version (similar story slight changes) and rushed it out before Scarlet Heart could air, so to look like his came out first. It was very sketchy, and people who caught on condemned him for that.
Looking at some of the comments here, it looks like the producer's plan worked.

This film truly highlighted Hong Kong cinema as among the finest in the film industry of the 90s with its terrific actors and incredible cinematography even by today's standards. They don't make films like this anymore and sadly HK film is now a joke
Saw "Happy Together" for the first time and understood why he and Leslie Cheung was such a big deal across Asia back in the 90s - they were phenomenal and total babes back in the day !

Whether you're missing out or not depends on your tastes/expectations. IMO if you struggle with historical mixed with fantasy then you may or may not get used to it. But romance is the key focus here (and doesn't kick in til 10 eps). I suggest finding out for yourself if it's your thing. People are just a little excited as it's one of the better Chinese dramas in awhile if you're into C-dramas and/or historicals, which itself a smaller community. And there are 'negative' comments and ppl who didn't like it but aren't as vocal (don't wanna be the unpopular opinion i guess but that's what discussions are for) Good or bad do share your thoughts if you try !
I checked out MTP thanks to this article, and to say I am impressed is an understatement. His song "Lac Troi" is some seriously good stuff. Gotta love the traditional sounds and cultural vibes mixed with modern beats.

Thanks for the shout! twas real nice of you :') Don't get me started on DH-FJ. They WERE cute but FJ got so annoying I found it hard to sympathize with her. I even see ppl saying she's treading on Su Jin territory minus the evil part and I can't say I disagree.
Welcome to the club lol I totally love Mark's easygoing personality offscreen. Saw few of his movies since and realized it's his acting/how he presents his characters that make him so darn attractive. Yang Yang is pretty to look at but boringggg af.
This has been on my PTW for the longest time, and now you're making me question why..why did I ever wait. I'm a sucker for ACTUAL strong female leads, and can't agree more that too often we're sold about a strong female lead just to have her turn into some indecisive Mary Sue who thinks she's being the bigger person with her noble idiocy.
Going to watch this cuz Chao Mark has is Mo Yaun face on. XD

Great review and I agree with y'all about Yang Yang. I feel the same that Mark has truly taken the character of Ye Hua and made it his own. Last thing anyone would've imagined considering all the flack prior to airing (due to his looks being a concern compared to Yang Yang). I'm only watching the movie now for the pretty and to compare the versions.
Zhe Lan and Yan Zi has to be one of my favorite things about this show.

Sadly I have to agree that the jealous female trope is an overused plot device,. Goes to show how mediocre of an author Tang Qi actually is. This is also where I wouldn't have minded if the drama didn't follow the novel so faithfully in this aspect.
With the exception of Bai Qian and Ghost Princess, most females here- good or bad - are lacking and it's unfortunate the bad ones stand out more than the good ones.
