That was what I thought at first too because I hated her so much. But after stepping back, I realize that if she had died, Prince Duan would've used her death as a reason to escalate the war between Xia and Yan. That would've immediately destroyed any chance for peace between the two nations, and Wang Zhao (the envoy) would've died in vain. Xiahou Dan did the right thing in the moment.

He deserved better. 😭

That whole situation was stressful for me to watch so I really appreciated Mr. Bei's sailor moon transformation during that moment lol.

When Wang Zhao took a handful of dirt from Xia with him on his secret mission for peace talks with Yan, I already knew he was a goner. Even so, it still hurt to watch him die like that. His hand reaching out to the closest piece of home he had — that tube of dirt — damn. I have something in my eyes.

The others are correct. He was drugged and SA'd when he was only 13-15 years old. His son might be biologically his, but bringing a new life into this world wasn't his choice. The son might be innocent, but so was he. He was also a child. So isn't he allowed some distance from the reminder of his trauma? Respectfully, I think he deserves some grace for everything that he has been through.

I'm paraphrasing, but when Xiahou Dan offered to be Wanyin's shield and sword during her times of danger so she wouldn't have to get her hands dirty — claiming that his experiences as an "actor" make him immune to psychological burdens — my eyes got misty.

She might not have known it at the time, but we as the audience knew it was a gut-wrenching lie. He just wanted to take on all of the filth and pain of this world on her behalf so she wouldn't have to lose her spark the way he did.

By promising her that she would never need to change, he was trying to gift her the innocence that was stolen from him as a child.

Her protector, but at what cost? I'm worried for his fate.

This kind of foreshadowing — I can't handle it. 😭

Right?? Based on what we've seen so far, it makes no sense for Prince Duan to be the hero of any story. Xiahou Dan wears a tyrant label out of survival, but Prince Duan is actually one because of greed. He's a walking contradiction — cringe.

Given his history of a lack of agency over his own body and life, I don't think that'll be in character for him. Protectiveness, probably yes. Possessiveness, most likely no. He knows what it's like to be seen as something to be claimed and controlled. I don't know if he'll want to do that to her unless she has given him consent.

With each episode, my disgust for Prince Duan and the Empress Dowager increases. Both are dangerous — the absolute scum of the earth — but while she actually terrifies me, he just gives me the ick. He's supposed to be charismatic and charming, but personally, I want to sanitize the air around me if he breathes a little too close. 🫠
