I had the same reaction for season1. I thought the way they changed from novel vs drama was not great. However,…
Ahh yes, certainly. There is one snippet from the novel that I really really freaking hope they adapt in. Because it'll be soooo freaking cool.
Its the part where Fan Xian was ambushed outside the city, then the demeanor when he enters the city, literally drag corpses through the city, and started calling names out, and lit the fire under the government's ass. Oh man, that part was chilling and exciting, I hope they adapt it in.
The downfall of reading the novel is that it leads to making comparisons. So, of course, because in the novel…
I had the same reaction for season1. I thought the way they changed from novel vs drama was not great. However, after continuing watching them I realized that the adaptation made sense. Give and take; novel vs drama.
So I begin to watch it in the mindset that this drama is an adaptation; the essence will be there, but some things will change and that is OK. Season2 should lead to a more darker approach, if they are still following the novel and there are alot of messy schemes ahead. We're in for a rough time.
I'll wait for more episodes to maximize bingeing Q_Q.
I think the story is carried by the fabulous acting of actress and actor. Pretty standard Kdrama plotline, even for a 'life' drama: some misunderstandings, someone died (and happens to be either of the Lead's family), one family had a 'talk' with another lead to break up, backstabbing/cheating, etc You know the drill.
Actors and actresses had a script and they made the best of what they can do. Good to watch if you're craving some Kdrama.
Lu Yu Xiao was great in this role. Hope she get more main cast in the future. She acted well.
TLDR for this drama is: Amazing costume designs, amazing choreography, great acting overall, OK story. One Brother is trying his best to not let the Gong's family be destroy, while the other Brother is trying his best to wife someone through this mess. Priority.

Ah... it's finally good to hear Fan Xian's voice again. Thanks for the link.
I love the novel, and I hope yall enjoy the second season as well :D. His 'fake death' was not in the novel, so I would like to see how the director spins it.
A bit of Blood of Youth and Detective Dee combination. This feels like a detective series more than anything lol. Rain Wang did great for her character Jiao Li Qiao, she's pretty and she's freaking nuts. A pretty nut? lmao. Only female character in here who has a personality.
Most characters here are pretty dull and boring. actions and choreography good. Main cast acting is good. Some cases they solved are pretty interesting. I think you'd enjoy it if you like detective/mystery or is a fan of the casts.
According to Wikipedia, Season 2 would be a prequel to the first season. Can someone confirm the accuracy of this…
The editor probably mixed it up with sequel vs prequel meaning. Even in the novel, there is no instance where the story took place before Fan Xian was born. So it is impossible, from the novel perspective, season 2 would be a prequel. Unless the writer is really, really wanted to be 'creative', in which all bets are off. And I can't think of any reason why they would perform a prequel where there is essentially no relation and story to be told in that point of view.
Hey, I don't think this is a big spoiler but just to add onto what KyungsooFans said, the Emperor is indeed female, and she is cosplaying as a male because her Mother did not born a Son. And so she had to take that responsibility, only a handful of close maids/guards know. They did not go too deeply into this in the novel, so I don't considered this part 'big' spoiler.
When you say 5-8 was a (hidden) number 1 ranked in power and combat. I got the feeling he was also a hidden mutant.…
Yeah, in the webtoon it is similar. He was able to compete with people that has super powers. Although the author didn't specify what he has (power), but those ranked people all wanted a rematch with him. It was shown more clearly in the webtoon because his reaction speed, punch power, and everything were hand-to-hand combat and it highlight why he was ranked 1 or 'Legendary'. If the series did retain that in someway, it would of been good. Because they started the premise or highlight of the series stating he is a 'Legendary' Delivery Knight, but the show never dive into why he is. They just call it "because he survived in area 5-8 for so long". Thought it was lazy writing and baiting people for hype measure.
So if anyone is watching the series, just think of it as a stand-alone show. My summary was more from a webtoon fan perspective (:
I liked the webtoon and was really excited to see a drama adaptation, and then it is also from Netflix, which means they have the budget for it, right?? RIGHT?? Unfortunately, budget doesn't equal a good show.
Honestly, Netflix really went 'Murica with this one. Lots of ridiculous CGIs and gun blazing. Very very different from the webtoon. They had also changed some things which I thought was the key point. The webtoon was great because they actually fight in hand to hand combat most of the time, but, with superpowers! Like mutant. It was great. Imagine having the fight sequences like so, but characters literally can break walls with fist, grow horns, speedster, mutated bodies and etc!! Wooow~
Although the webtoon was also rushed to an ending, it did give you the vibe of why 5-8 was such a 'legendary' Delivery Knight. I think he was a (hidden) ranked 1 national in terms of combat and power, and all other ranks had their own powers too...ahhh they robbed us of that too. As a fan of the webtoon, the series is definitely 1/5.
Since they changed so much from the webtoon, it could be in its own field, so you don't need to read the webtoon to correlate with the drama. I guess that's why it's an 'adaptation'. The only thing they brought over from the webtoon is a dystopia world, 5-8, and government doing shady stuff, which to be honest, it is literally the same as any other dystopia series. The writing weren't great either, IMO.
One of the best wuxia dramas in recent years. If you are a fan of wuxia, this is legit! It has many of the wuxia tropes; sects, court politics, secret arts, assassin's guide, youths who dream of justice and adventures, and especially; ranking and ranking of swords!! You can sing the national anthem of ‘Dugu Qiubai’ here lol. They certainly did not cheap out on the production nor the choreography, because it was just simply so beautiful. You can tell they spent ALOT of time on it.
The sword names, fighting, and even the details for all of it…hollyyyy crappp, this is wuxia’s fan wetdream. I'm really glad I didn’t watch it when it first came out, because I woulda gone crazy waiting for it. But now, I can binge it. You have to trust me, if you really love wuxia and appreciate great fight choreography and sequences, this show is a must!
Also, Li Hong Yi should really try out for ventriloquist, because for the whole freaking drama the biggest I see his mouth move is to this extent *o* it is like he talks in all lower cases I swear. If you take a shot for any time you can see his set of upper teeth, you can only be drunk after rewatching the whole drama 3 times. Lmaoo
If you want a rom-com to past time, this could be it. The leads have chemistry. But the story were predictable, alot of back and forth that should just be 1 episode long. I think if they went the slice of life route, it would of been much better.
Still, it is something fun to put in the background.
A simple story, short even- for a movie. Only 70 minutes long. Got the point across, great action and choreography. Highly recommend if you have an hour to spare.
