Alright loves I did it, I finally did it. After SIXTEEN DAYS of being unable to get myself to start anything new…
I've watched three different dramas since TSL including the almighty LBFAD lol but still high on TSL. Best of luck though, <3, let us know how it goes?
Sigh, you just started it and without giving the characters a chance, you wrote it off. I don't know how you judge…
Personally I think both LBFAD and TSL are worth watching, they're very different dramas with different tones, but I have to say that I just don't feel as connected to the characters in LBFAD either. What that drama has in spades is very beautiful visuals and a pretty straightforward narrative. It's a good drama, but I've got like 9 eps to go and I haven't felt the same rollercoaster of emotions as with TSL.

A lot of people liked that plot device, personally I really dislike body switching as well. It's not in there a ton, but just not something I've ever been into.

oof I get you, I'm on episode 28 of LBFAD and tbh I struggled mightily with Esther's interpretation throughout the first half, especially. The drama is good enough that I was able to deal because other things kind of offset that aspect, but I can completely see how many wouldn't be able to put up with it. She has got to be the most extreme case of a "childlike" FL I've come across, not just because of the voice but her whole character. I'm honestly not hating on Esther...God knows if she's in You Also Have Today with XingXu I'm going to watch the hell out of that show and be excited for both, but she's definitely not everyone's cup of tea as XLH.

Xianxia is pretty much historical fantasy with taoist elements, so pointing out historical context is 100% pertinent.
Second, if you're on episode 10 and think Yetan behaves like a 12 year old I don't know what to tell you. One of the best things about this drama is how well written each character is, there's a strong, relatable reason why everyone is the way they are. It was easy to understand Yetan's behavior because we know almost from the get-go that she's used to living in survival mode. She's been imprisoned and neglected her entire life. She always prepared to be Void queen, and has ZERO idea what it's like to be a proper Heavenly princess consort.
What you're witnessing is a fish out of water situation, and a character who doesn't want to end up trapped twice, first at home, then in a stiff, regimented place like the heavenly realm...and I could go and on as to why Yetan behaves the way she does but others have already pointed many things out. She puts on such a brave face and is so childlike in her admiration of the world, and that just makes her more endearing considering all the emotional and physical abuse she has suffered through. (including being literally starved)
What and what? Who was edited out & why? Who was hated for a character (CXX?)?
All the GMP drama to this day stumps me...like the mental energy to project so hard onto these characters. To this day, Li Cheng Yin fans and regular CXX fans have this beef going, and then there's people from the other side (the FL fans) who insist on somehow conflating LCY and CXX as one entity. I for one couldn't be happier that at last, CXX has a role that has taken him out of that Eastern Palace prison. I'm as big a LCY apologist as could be, but enough is enough. The fan wars back then were ridiculous and they amounted to him deactivating his fan club.
TSL definitely raised the bar for me in terms of ML and the relationship bonds. I feel like we won't get another…
The first half contains quite a bit of toxicity but then again, that's to be expected because his character is basically supposed to be this "bad guy"...and yes, definitely more along the vibes of QK and CF though imho I found QK and CF easier to like. I'm not knocking on his character or on LBFAD. just comparing tropes / relationships knowing fully well everyone has their own preferences. I'm sure he'll have a proper character arc because it gives off all kinds of Beauty and the Beast vibes.

I'm only halfway through and I'm pretty sure he'll change later, mind you. There's also a backstory of pain and abuse related to his dad to explain his behavior away (ring any bells? lol, except that plays out so different in TSL).
It's all fantasy at the end of the day so it's not like I mind it too much, but I guess after Youqin, comparing MLs is inevitable. DFQC is definitely not a "good guy" so it stands to reason that all these semi-violent, toxic things will happen. It's just extra grating because XLH is very much weak and childlike, not in the way Yetan is, but childlike as in having all the innocence and naiveté of a literal child.
For me, rhere's just something about the bond between Youqin and Yetan that really struck a chord, maybe it's just that they felt like real people who bonded thanks to their emotionally abusive dads and the consequence of that...it just felt real.
I saw that last year had some very good Xianxias like: Love Between Fairy and Devil, Blue Whisperer and Immortal…
For me the bar is set very high now, but who knows...I doubt we'll get another xianxia nearly as funny as this one in a very long time. And as for Youqin...someone on Douban said it best when describing CXX's two best known roles: Li Chengyin set the lowest bar and Youqin set the ceiling.
