I haven't started this yet, but it isn't strange that the mother wants her daughters to get married at any cost.…
Even in the Qing dynasty, the family dynamics didn't change. People still marry young when the Qing dynasty ended. back in the dynasty/societies...girls get betrothed at a young age of 12 or when they come of age (after they get their period) and marry at 14-16. they are lucky if they live pass 40 during that time period. once they passed
that age/primetime, their prospects are slim to none....they will really have to marry the old men or settled to concubines or remain unmarried. another option is to go into servitude (indentured servants) to support themselves. with the society of the time, the oldest get married first and in the order or their family seniority. having so many single unmarried maidens is a challenge for widows.
the madame have 5 daughters (4 unmarried) total and with little to no money to their names. it doesn't help that their are rumors about them being shrewds makes it hard to find a decent family to married. they had to leave their hometown to find better prospects.
In episode 6, 3rd sister explained why the 1st sister married young and became a widow young. the family obviously fallen on hard times to have to make this choice/sacrifice. she married a sickly well off person, not an old man...it is common for families to use 'happy' occasion (e.g. wedding) to offset or 'lift' a dire situation (sickness) and will pay a hefty bride price for it. no mother would marry their daughter off like that unless it's a desperate time. the girls were brought up close and obviously, in a family situation like this, the oldest have to make the sacrifice for the sake of the family.
this drama is no fairytale and it's not a modern courtship of romances. it depicts society during that time and the expectations it has on women.
I've read quite a few comments and the reviews for this show. Why is there so little mention that this is a Chinese…
Chinese dynasties/societies has been around longer than the British. Just b/c Jane Austen's novels/themes are more well known doesn't mean this drama is the 'chinese' version/adaption or 'loosely based on p&p. since it's not pride and prejudice, no need to compare/expect and disappoint yourself that this drama 'strayed' from the novel's plot.
the drama depicts men and women in society according to the song dynasty period. women's struggles and places in society (throughout all the dynasties) will always be unfair and a struggle when it comes to independence or even to make their own choice when it comes to the mater of the heart.
I love the sisters' bond in this drama. the widowed mother's challenges to run the household and raise the daughters.
The drama is about the battle of wits...and so far, it's light hearted, pretty funny/entertaining.
Not the same theme…FL have a second chance and using this to get back what is hers and make those who killed her paid. Not the filial daughter who went to war in place of her father. Her character is very well written on her journey.
Ummm…don’t have any expectations lol. Drama will never deliver the novel’s exact storyline and plot. They…
I don’t get it too…unless they are combining cheng Li Su and wingman in one. For these novels, I rather they break it into 2 seasons. Only love like the galaxy was a decent close adaption of the novel!
Just finished the novel. What a great story. Now my expectation for the drama becomes even higher. Please don't…
Ummm…don’t have any expectations lol. Drama will never deliver the novel’s exact storyline and plot. They already axed Lin Shuang He (ML bff and doctor) and he’s a major character in the novel!
Depression effects all - no matter if you are poor or rich, popular or not…I applaud her courage to speak up and take a stand. Take everything one day at a time and self love is very important.
that 0.5 is because they let SFL die at last episode which is unnecessary. Also there are some comments saying…
I get that part, which is why I find others opinion of the Fl is quite harsh. She’s a leader. I would give this drama a higher rating if the couple have a strong chemistry on scene.

i agree with you in what was the feedback about the FL. she is headstrong with a moral character and the decisions she made is for the greater good but not realizing that some decisions comes with sacrifice and tragedy. i gave this drama a 7.5. for some reason, i don't find the ML and FL have a strong chemistry. there's some pairing where you would root and cheer for the couple's development. this pair just don't do it for me. 9.5 would be for a great drama you would watch on repeat more than once.
She has trauma from her past life with regards to marital duties. If your only experience was WTY and a miscarriage…
well, the author captured the time period's expectations and lack of expectations. sex is always pleasurable for men then women, esp during that time frame when all you were told to expect from a married life comes from your aunties/moms or an educational book of drawings to show what marriage/sex is. it is not about pleasure or fun, but simply as your duty of a wife to the husband and to the family to bear children.
LOL...i still cringed at the ages of these characters in novels from dynasty times...but life do begin young back then.
