Okay...I know the writer is using Soo In to put pressure on YK. But it came at a cost of her looking stupid to us. Anyone with a small brain should be able to see that he wishes to keep his identity a secret. And how dangerous it is for him to be found out. I don't dislike her for it. I'll just have to ignore it as lazy writing.
Well...minor complaint. Even with that, ep 6 was much more enjoyable with all the setup out of the way.
jang hyuk's laugh. lol I wasn't planning on watching this because I'd already seen the Taiwanese one, which I did like. But I'm glad that this one has its own flavor. It's really cute, and its characters make the show shine (so far).
I thought that the camerawork gave this movie a very natural and realistic appearance as if you were watching people right in front of you. The way this film is shot actually helps it....not detracts from it.
The director is actually a long-time veteran known among film critics. His films are not for mainstream, ones that quickly become redundant and boring. But are ones that will provoke thought and feeling. And this one is no different as it is achingly beautiful. I felt the sorrow and loneliness of the female lead. The lack of a soundtrack and its often very quiet setting is another aspect that helps the film.
It's a film that is NOT heavily romanticized as you may see in some other fluffy shows. It won't give you cheap entertainment using pretty characters. Rather, it feels more like a study deep within the human emotions. It's one that is very specifically crafted by Hong Sang Soo, and it needs to be understood from that perspective, preferably through more than 1 watch.
I agree with SayItAintSoJoe. I too enjoyed the artistic style of the Vengeance Trilogy more. But Choi Min Sik is brilliant in all his performances, including this one, so it's always a joy to see him.
The fight scene in the American remake is plain awful. You know the Hollywood treatment where they make it so polished that it becomes cheesy? I guess an example that MDL users would understand is My Sassy Girl and its remake. You take something that is so raw and so relatable and make it so far removed for its viewer that even though it may essentially be the same scene, all the heart and glory is gone. This is why Park Chan Wook is so acclaimed.
This movie is for people who are tired of the same old movies. For people who love films. People who pay attention to the directing. This is not for people who still think Transformers is a masterpiece.
If you're easily disgusted, you may also want to give this one a pass.
What I like about this drama is that it isn't centered on one character. It slowly reveals the story behind 4 people who are caught up in a web of adultery. But if you're looking for romance only, you may want to look somewhere else because the adultery here is not heavily romanticized. But if you're looking for a drama with many layers to it, watch this. How much attention you give it is how much meaning you will get out of it.
Each of them will deal with their own personal demons, more so as things get more complicated. Oh but it's not just adultery. Being as vague as I can be...there's also some other shadiness going on that adds that extra tension throughout the story. The drama is not afraid to go as dark as it can go. One of the males is one of the most conflicted, tormented characters I have seen in a kdrama. It's a heavy watch...but it's one of the better scripted ones in terms of quality.
I feel that it is only because of my expectations that this drama would be different...but its failure to deliver in the last 1/4...that my rating is so lowered. But I'm not sure what else I should give it when the lasting impression is...ew. Then you got those kdramas that lack logic 99.9% of the time but are "entertaining" and consistent enough that they manage to get a higher final rating. It's not that this drama was bad..
My issue with this is how outrageous it became towards the end. Otherwise, it still enjoyable, as long as you don't take it too seriously. If you're someone who is critical (I acknowledge I am becoming that way so trying to be too critical), little things may start to bug you. If you're not, give it a try. You might like it. I agree with the below comment about this not being romance and not bashing other actors. Anyways, I found the first 2/3s of the drama interesting enough that I'm not going to regret watching it.
And IMO, the movie was amazing. This... it's different. It's aimed at younger people to delight younger peoples' emotions.
You know I like Ryu Tae Oh like I liked Dexter (I know I shouldn't but I do).
But why is he and Ji Wool sitting down together like they're going to have a cup of tea and chat? Cause...I don't know... I can't imagine a serial killer being allowed to sit around...walk around...hang out...so freely.
I loved the last scene where Seung Ha's head fell on Oh Soo's shoulder. And then the camera zooms out...that picture. Especially towards the end of the drama as you begin to see how tired and lonely Seung Ha actually was, I begin wishing he would let someone give him his rest. Oh Soo's final posture reminded me of Oh Soo...how casual and strong (minded) he was compared to Seung Ha who was very smart but weak inside. Oh Soo looks like that pillar of strength. Even though it was only after death...to see Seung Ha finally be able lean on somebody... :( Sorry, had to get that out.
wow. I've only seen Joo Ji Hoon in Goong before...and I never thought much of him then. But that ending... amazing...
I didn't think the point of the show was suspense or even mystery. I liked how all the events were put together. I liked the relationships and what they meant to each other. I liked the depth of the characters. How they changed as time went on. I appreciated that the show went deeper than just its story. If you missed out on that, then you'll probably just see this as a crappy mystery drama.
I don't know how you cut something like this into less episodes. I found every piece of dialogue to be important. Of course some things take a while to pan out. But even that is necessary in creating friction between the characters, which is also important in the bigger picture It's seeing the mastermind at work.
Like revenge? Tired of stupid police in kdramas (not just stupid but, "who cares about the law"? Don't mind paying attention and figuring out all the characters? Try this one out.
Don't watch it if you're too impatient.

It seems it hasn't been finalized yet, despite different articles saying different things. Let's hope not. I want at least one decent kdrama for 2014.

I have a subscription so I can't confirm if it's available for all right now. I just know that sometimes, subscribers get shows a bit earlier.
