I see this more as an "elseworlds" type of story, an alternate history if you will. It's like exploring…
no this is exactly why people dislike pocahontas! I've never liked that movie because I learned about the suffering and eviction of indigenous populations since I was 12, there are many petitions started to remove the movie and posts from indigenous people educating the public on the disgusting romanticization of john smith. Like I said before though, I am not bashing the drama producers at all, I am just expressing my opinion on how I found it a little odd. In the end it is just an interpretation of history meant for audiences to enjoy lightly.

But a piece of media like disney's Pocahontas is more widely denounced because the populations affected by the suffering are still very much alive today, whereas people might find BAYM not as serious because of how far removed we are from yeonsangun's time.

i know what you mean with the kdrama romcom thing. but from what I see they’ve kept many major details from the real story of yeonsangun, just they’ve really restructured it like moving certain events earlier in the story (chayeo - kidnapping women), to almost shift the blame away from him for it, and make it seem more like a political strategy.,, but it’s the fact they just kind of mentioned chayeo in the drama and then glazed over it so quickly, like he (the real king) kidnapped up to 10,000 women during his reign and it was all non consensual (obviously non consensual in the drama too),, it just felt a little strange to me. i was actually seeing discourse from a korean novelist i really like who has previously written a book based on yeonsangun and extensively researched him, and many of her readers also found this adaptation weird. obviously they’ve made the tyrant king more “palatable” for modern viewers and i guess it’s common in other romance dramas too, so it’s whatever

yes i get this, but this is what I mean, if they really wanted to do a reimagining, a non slapsticky comedy would have been in better taste. I think the crazy comedy scenes paralleled with the scenes where they talk about his tyranny was kind of odd. Another example of the same kind of drama is Mr Queen, a slapsticky comedy time travel historical drama, and the king is also based on a real king, Cheoljong, however cheoljong was considered a people-oriented king who bought forward some reform. I’m not entirely dismissing The Tyrants Chef, I still think it’s an interesting concept, and I’m interested to keep watching, but it’s strange this is the approach they took, if you get what I mean.

Actually Scarlet Heart Ryeo struck me a little too because it portrays the ruthless king Gwangjong, but it might be a better example of a good reimagining unlike what this drama is trying to do, because scarlet heart was mostly tragic melodrama. While it starts lighthearted with some fish-out-of-water comedy, it quickly shifts into palace politics, betrayals, war, and the bloody rise of Wang So. The romance is bittersweet and ends painfully

I’m curious to see how melo/tragic of a development this story takes considering how comedy oriented it is right now

I actually agree with this. I know nothing about the history of this king but from the drama you can tell they're…
exactly!! i wish they just made up a king with not as serious “tyranny” because it’s so odd for them to take the very very harrowing story of a real king and use it as inspo for a romance comedy show.. it’s like if someone took ted bundy and used him and his victims stories to make a comedy tv show,,, just because we’re so far removed from yeonsanguns time doesn’t mean it’s okay to turn real historical atrocities into a quirky romance

Yeah, I get what you mean, I was worried about that too, but I’m also curious to see where they take him. An…
oh i had read that he took his concubines a little after he began the investigation and revenge for his mother! maybe i read an incorrect source, but yes he did build up to bigger crimes as his rule went on to the point where the people hated him and would spread so much hate against him he banned people from gaining literacy and education. i did notice how they moved around some historical events like the chayeo you mentioned, i think it’s almost as if to make the chayeo and hunting land more of a political strategy for him rather than rooted in his supposed twisted personality.. theyre def trying to shift a lot of the blame from his character to make him more grey and likable,, i still think its odd how they chose to use a real king rather than a made up tyrant king title and history ,, but like u mentioned im also interested to see the way they progress his story reflective of the real yeonsangun

i mean from history we also know he tortured his fathers concubines and other people he even barely suspected had ill intentions against his mother and could be involved in her death (early on in his reign, before he took up noksu as a concubine) 😭 he wasn’t the greatest, but of course like many other royals in history, but i agree it’s interesting to see how they will take his story, im looking forward to it anyways

Okay yes they used the tyrant king real name but this is based on a written manhwa not trying to romanticize him,…
that’s not true 😭 most of yeonsanguns tryannical rage started as a result of his mother dying after being poisoned, he began a massive purge to avenge her. he also was extremely lustful and preyed on innocent women, kidnapping them off the streets. i doubt his consort encouraged that, he actually started committing tyrany long before he took her as a concubine. i guess they might blame it all on her in the drama and webtoon though?? but from what im seeing in the dramas he’s already outright admitted to a lot of the crimes associated with yeonsangun

yeah that’s true they’ve made a lot of adjacent name changes but still kept all the bad things he did for some reason?? 😭 i wish they downplayed it a little bit, like emptying a whole neighborhood for hunting purposes is just horrible, im interested to see how they’ll redeem him

it seems they've kept most of the details similar to the real king (just changing up names) so i'm not sure yet.. i think they'll probably create a narrative where it'll be revealed that the historical retellings of yeonsangun that jiyeong read are all inaccurate and in reality it was all someone else's doing. not sure but seriously how will they redeem him, he's already admitted to so much tyranny in the drama

well they've kept most of the details of his story the same (just changed up a few names to very similar sounding alternatives), his consort, the details of history, and jiyeong went back to the past knowing all the details of it because she extensively studied him, and i haven't read the webtoon, so correct me if i'm wrong, but will she fall for him? i really hope not

its so odd how theyre trying to romanticize Yeonsangun, an actual real life tyrant king that existed in history…
if they just made up a fake king with a slightly less tyrannic behavior it may have been palatable, but seriously i dont know how theyre going to give yeonsangun of all people character development

baffling how jiyeong will even fall for him (well i really hope she doesn't) knowing all the crimes he committed, he literally forced innocent women in sl@very, kidnapped young women off the streets and ruined their futures, displaced entire neighborhoods for his hunting grounds, banned the hangul alphabet and didnt want the people becoming literate, DISMEMBERED prominent scholars, and the list goes ON and ON. all in the name of revenge for his mom's death, but instead catching hundreds of thousands of innocent lives in the crossfires... like are we being fr right now

its so odd how theyre trying to romanticize Yeonsangun, an actual real life tyrant king that existed in history and exploited tons of innocent women and civilians...
like do they think in this drama his barbaric behavior can really be justified by some childhood trauma?...

edit: this comment is in no way bashing the drama by the way, i’m still interested in watching it and seeing how they develop yeosanguns story from a fantasy comedy perspective, but it seems a little bad in taste for them to use a real king when the fantasy genre made it entirely possible for them to create a fake king character with his own comedic tyrannical behaviors, like it’s honestly weird to me how such a serious topic like yeosanguns reign is being used as focal point in a comedy show and being talked about lightheartedly (its certainly interesting but like come on.. there is definitely a moral line being crossed here, the names and details are just too similar)
