Title Motel California Spoiler
After 4 episodes I am actually REALLY liking it. Far more than Love Scout. I also have so many thoughts.

Starting with the romance. I can understand how on the surface some people would like to see the leads to under up with second main leads. Here's the thing thought - I honestly think they could not be in a long lasting happy relationship until they deal with their past traumas, connections and give it a proper closure. And for me that closure would in fact lead to them ending up together. Because the issue between them is not "them", but it's each one of them separately. If they deal with their own insecurities and heal, there is no reason for them not to be together and they obviously love and care for each other deeply.

Gang Hui needs therapy. That's obvious. She is deeply insecure. She was in the past embarrassed about Yeon Su liking her, not because he was embarrassing, but because she felt not worthy of his love. And it still is like that in present timeline. For her, her love for him is not "worth" the problems and pains their relationship would bring to Yeon Su. At the same time he is such a vital part of her life she cannot fully let go. I honestly love how complex her character is. On one hand she is deeply insecure, but she is also confident and proud of her work and skills she has in that area. Her past is dragging he down so bad and emotionally breaking her. You can seem as the most badass bitch ever with all the success you can imagine and then you meet your past bully, the family member who abused you etc. and the safe bubble of professional and strong identity burst so quick.

Also, Yeon Su is not perfect. He has a massive burden he needs to address - his mother. We don't see it now because that's not what the plot is focusing on, but his unhealthy and toxic relationship with his mother WILL ruin all and every relationship he might have in the future. He will not be happy "only if he moves on from Gang Hui". While Gang Hui is insecure, Yeon Su lacks assertiveness and a healthy dose of egocentrism. He is not assertive with his mom, nor Gang Hui, he does not ask the questions he wants to hear the answers for, does not say what he wants. He hints... but never digs deep to actually get what he needs. Like... ma dude, you are NOT dating Nan U. Why won't you clear the misunderstanding Gang Hui has? Dude tries to win her... in the background... behind her back... when she is not looking 🤡 So what is he waited for her for 10 years... that's exactly his issue. He waits... and patiently looks after people from afar. And acts only as a reaction to something that happens. And is so quick to back down.

But he is also just a flawed human being. His relationship with his mother is painfully relatable. Does he need to cut contact with her so she can get her shit together?/ But with how irresponsible she is and living with abuse person, there is an honest chance of her dying without Yeon Su's support and protection. And it is NOT his job to support and protect her, but at the same time the idea of your parent being harm when you know you could have done something could eat him alive. Honestly tragic and shitty situation.

The character I get the least right now, but I also kind of like is actually Gang Hui's father - Chun Pil. What is his deal 🙃 He is borderline neglectful father. But then we see the flashbacks and he is actually so caring and emotionally available whenever Gang Hui needed. But maybe the issue was the fact he created for Gang Hui the safe bubble around him, in the motel, but did not really fight for her outside of it? That I don't know, since they did not really show much of it. But that would be my first guess.

Seok Gyeong is everything. I am so fucking obsessed it's sad 🤡 I need me one in my life asap. I love everything about him. I have ZERO complains. I also have a delulu wish he would end up with A Reum. They would be such a cute and adorable couple I cannot. For me their energy would match so well 😭 I love how he is a rich boy, but he is also so caring and empathic and understanding and patient. But not melo boring, but cheeky fun.

As for Nan U - holy shit she is pretty. Personality wise she I like her a lot too. Really energetic and kind. But they did not show her enough yet for me to form any strong opinions. Also, am I the only one would thinks she gives similar vibe to
Kim Go Eun in her earlier days in her career? lol

Park Esther and Hwang Jeong Gu are such a positive representation for women. Driven, strong, but also fun and humane. I like how they are not this cold lady boss type.

Cha Seung Eon and Ryu Han U and AMAZING too. Honestly that scene when they were making pancakes with heavy equipment was so funny. Boys be boys in the best way possible. I was impressed with the skills too. I appreciate how while they disagree with Yeon Su and his feelings towards Gang Hui and vocalize it, with actions they support him. It's not thing to make your opinion clear to your friends, it's another to then abandon them because of that disagreement. I love how they are still there for him no matter what.

Han A Reum is my baby girl. She is so adorable. I want to see more of her. I am still living in that delulu lend shipping her with Seok Gyeong 🙃 They "interacted" literally once 🤡

Visually the show is STUNNING. Tone is far more light than I imagined after episode one. The poster, description, tags - everything gave me melo-depression. But it's a lot more fun. They know the views need so fun and light moments to truly enjoy the depth and deep. Otherwise I would just feel exhausted watching 😅

Anyway, the drama is honestly a positive surprise for me 🔥

Ahh thank goodness I came across your review. I couldn't put a finger on the reason why this part was lacking…
Glad you could relate to my thoughts. I honestly still loved pt 2, but part 1 was just a true masterpiece in my eyes 😭

OMG I AM SO HAPPY. THIS IS ALL I'VE BEEN ASKING FOR, A LITTLE BIT MORE BALANCE 😭

We've got solid relationship progression now that she knows who his daughter is. She is also more open to simply being curious about him. We got a solid dose of family shit - not just ML and his child, but overall family themes going on with the kids being bullied for having one parent, and FL chatting with Byeol about having one person who loves you being enough. And we also had an interesting office drama with the fake/not-fake bag.

All the main genres being presented in more or less balanced way - office, romance, family/life!

Eun Woo painting Byeol's nails and then she painting his pinky in pink 😭

I also feel so validated watching this episode lol I kept saying ML is basically a nanny to FL, and this ep even he said she is not much different from a kid 🤣

You can go to my profile hover over "add to friend" and you will see the block option. Advice to use it, makes life easier 👍🏻 On the app it's on the profile next to add friend under "...".

I just want to point out, I always hide my initial comments under spoiler, you could just scroll past it, but you made a conscious choice of opening and reading it 🤡

You're really overthinking this in every episode. It's not a big deal. This show isn't just about him staying…
Well, I will continue making similar points if there won't be an improvement and I will also talk about it in the review when the drama finishes airing. And this week I clearly showed that it's more than just taking care of the kids that is the problem for me. It's the overall time vortex the characters are living is to make sure ML looks perfect in all areas, even though it makes no logical sense for him to manage all the responsibilities placed on him. It was just more visible with his child care at first. But now that he acts as assistant to every characters, and nanny to FL, and therapist to everyone who has a problem, then also cleaner and cook... I think they need to tone down... The most interesting characters are the ones with flaws, which he lacks.

And here's the question - if someone every episode complimented how good and well paced the romance is, would you tell them to focus on other aspects too, and that their compliments are repetitive?

Yeah... thank for the advice, don't need it 👍🏻

Dramas are not "you either hate them or love them". Some are fine, end up being 6.5-7.5 type of a watch and it's all good. This drama is like that for me. I like some things, I dislike some things.

The same way people can compliment the drama about one and the same thing after every episode, I can criticize it about one and the same thing if I don't see the improvement.

He had one scene with her, and one short conversation through the phone. As I said - family is ONE OF THE MAIN GENRES. Now imagine if the leads had one scene with each out throughout the episode. Do you see the issue here?

For me the case is simple - if the drama is not about the family and it's just a rom-com, don't add family as one of the main genres ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Then I would just not pick it up in the first place and we would not be here. I'm complaining because the product I was buying is different from the description given.

Every rom-com needs a trauma or a serial killer or a stalked as a background drop 🤣

Well, at the same time, this show is not only about his romance with FL. It';s called balance of the plot and this show so far lacks it. As I said, it literally has Family as one of the genres on Korean websites. It should by all means be more of a focus of the drama if it;s named as one of the main genres.

and I'm repeating the same thing every episode, because there is not improvement in that aspect in every new episode ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ It does matter to me, because for me him being a loving single father was one (not the only one, but one of for sure) of the reasons I even started this show. The same way people who only care for the romance can ignore all the other aspects and how they are underdeveloped, I can criticize the lack of the development in the area I am interested in. It's that simple.

Not them literally making sure we see him working late when everyone left even more with editing 😅
This episode FL interacted more with his daughter than he did 🤡

Okay, but like... I think that's what kind of bothers me - it's a drama that exists without time restrictions. It feels like they have 48 hours in a day. We never know when he starts work, when he ends it, when he sees his child, how much. He is FL's assistant, and nanny, and cook, and cleaner. He is basically an assistant to all the other workers too... and their therapist. But apparently he is also a perfect father... and I'm like... when?

Okay to the episode.

First of all I kind of checked out of the main romance. That said, the dinner scene was still cute as fuck. I just barely feel any chemistry going on.

On the other hand, I like the interactions between second leads and I wish they would make more of these. Kind of was hoping the dinner at ML's house would be a good opportunity 😅

Also crime to end the fucking episode on the literally best scene lol That whole morning and elevator shit was gold. I only have one question... did ML sleep on the floor next to FL? Coz... that would be weird and inappropriate as fuck 🤡

Anyway, now that she know who is his daughter and all that, I hope they will focus a bit more on the "family" part of the show 🙃 I mean it is literally one of the main genres listed on Korean sites 😭😭😭

Exactly. The girl who rode the swing was being weird too. And no she wasn’t drunk, she was being intentionally…
Yeah, she was trying to catch the attention, but it was such a bad move since majority of people said they dislike behavior like that 😅

I do feel like I'm watching it more for fun entertainment than the romance 🙃

I feel as if people may not like this version because they loved the fiery attraction between the main leads in…
What this comment tells me is that it;s a good drama, but it's a complete failure of an adaptation and I'm not sure how I feel about it and if I want to watch it now.

The original story (not kdrama, the webtoon) had extremely impactful message avoue the effects of toxic relationships and how it can psychologically affect you long after you "moved on". The ending was one of the best but also saddest things I have read as a woman. Korean version already botched it so bad, but the more I read about japanese one, it seems like the completely threw away original story and message and created just... completely different story 😭
On Single’s Inferno Season 4 Jan 15, 2025
Guys... they had one day together, as in all met each other. I find it way more sus when someone is completely dedicated to one person already (still love Theo tho 🤣), because they all barely know each other.

I have no issue with everyone keeping their opinions open. I do get annoyed when someone tries to find excuses rather than being honest - I want to get to know everyone and then make decisions. Yes, I'm talking about Jeong Su. Him picking 4 girls was not an issue. Him coming up with all the excuses and when he chatted later with Si An I just rolled my eyes so hard 🙃
On Single’s Inferno Season 4 Jan 14, 2025
Lee Si An is still my girl after 2 episodes. I like her a lot. She vibes with everyone and picks up the mood well.
Tae O is a huge surprise, he is winning me over 😅🤡

On the other hand Dong Ho whom I liked the most first impression is giving me off vibes. He talks a lot trying to excuse and rationalize his decisions and changing his mind. When he does not have to. Do you fuck up often that your first instinct is to makes excuses even when the situation does not need it? Or he has some trauma from past relationships, when he had to explain every decision he makes ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

it's mandatory to not know anything about the plot to fully appreciate this type of storytelling < this is kind of how I got into majority of dramas 😅 Don;t know if I would be able to not call out all the shitty moves, whatever they are 🤡
