And we open with sisterhood. I love how the symbolism of women's solidarity is holding hands in this show. We had so many different shows in different contexts of holding hands close ups and I find it so beautiful. No words needed.

A kid tells you they dragged away the madam WHILE SITTING IN FRONT OF GIL CHAE'S HOUSE and you see everyone being in panic moving around, and instead of getting that child to the household so they can ask him what he saw, you take the child away for a snacks 🤡 You are either dumb or evil - in both cases I cannot see a redemption arc going on.

I know why I dislike Ryang Eum. Because he is immature and his emotions cloud his judgement a lot. The idea he even had to ask why he should care if Gil Chae was kidnapped is awful, ESPECIALLY since he knows EXACTLY what will happen to her, because he saved complete strangers from the same fate in the past. But he is jealous and he cannot see a victim of a kidnapping and abuse in Gil Chae, just the fact she received the love from Jang Hyun that he wanted. And the fact he decided to tell the truth was not simply because another human being is going to be abused and tortured, but because Jang Hyun's gonna get his feelings hurt - also gross.

This is why I love this drama - the focus on the hardships common people face. I got so angry when they killed the girl just because she was too tired to walk anymore. So inhumane. But that's something the drama differs from many other historical shows. I am so tired of royal family being poisoned and dramatically spitting fountain of blood, or coughing for 20 episode to die at the end. Or the only war violence showed being a "battle scenes" with male lead slaying all the enemies. I love how this drama shows that war has the biggest impact on normal people.

I LOVE GIL CHAE SO MUCH SHE IS LITERA;LY THE BEST FEMALE LEAD IN THE EXISTANCE OF ANY FUCKING KDRAMA EVER! THE LENGTH SHE GOES TO FOR PEOPLE SHE CARES ABOUT AND KNOWS NEED HER IS SO ADMIRABLE! The way she did not even hesitate to have that dude put hands under her dress to get the ornament if it meant saving Jong Jong! For me the scene on the beach is somewhere between 1636 and 1659. It makes no sense for jang hyun not to age at all for 23 years, especially since they did age the person in prison. I think the beach scene is the moment when he goes "missing" and 1659 is when they are trying to investigate his current location and find out if he is even still alive.

How i saw it, the reason why she told him in that latter that she does not love him enough, and basically is picking the other dude is because he literally told her that is she picks another man and tells him she does not love him he can move on with mo regrets. For me, ot was her wishful thinking that letter worded like that would make it easier for him to move on, because as far as she knew, they could never ever be together after she marries the official.

Old Gil Chae would, but after experiencing the hardships of war, she would not be able to leave her family to be with Jang Hyun. I do agree that all the other aspects added to her deciding to stay, but even if she had all the trust in ML, she knew he would never leave, she loved him with all his heart, I still think she would stay. The only way I can see her leaving at that moment is if Jang Hyun had a plan of protecting her family and helping them too.

To be fair, by episode 1 standards even gil chae would be listed as supprting character 🤣 episode one was Jang Hyun only 🤡

Personally i do think it's her prioritizing safety of her family over her own happiness. The moment she decided not to leave with Jang Hyun was right after she met her father when she went there to say goodbyes. That was the trigger that made her change her mind in the last second.

They both love each other and they both made decisions that made it seem like their feelings are not as deep as they thought - in Jang Hyun's case it was when he left for Qing the first time and left Gil Chae.
