I know the novel is dark. I could understand why adapting it faithfully would have been impossible.
Sadomasochistic S+ drama ugh, not in my wildest dreams.
But the writers made the characters suffer, despite being strong characters in the beginning. Yes it leveraged my sense of pityness and I cried for them. However, the change was drastic.
Therefore some people are pissed.

I would say, he fell in love with her before she dies, but he kept it a secret. I also don't know why he had to lose his brilliance and why She had to loose her martial art skills.
It is nice to have character development, indeed, but I would have preferred them to stay true to themself and make the story evolve, instead of running after the story.
However, I respect the writer's choices but they could have introduced what happen differently and thouroughly.

Acting is marvellous in this show.

Episode 4 : They must team up. Can Prince Jing trust you Mei Lin?

Looking at the Qingzhou knot falling on his Go board, Prince Jing whispers : « Only a dead man can leave any evidence. » After full consideration, no more hesitations. He has to save Mei Lin. If he doesn't act up quickly, War Minister Zhang Yin will soon take action and the proof will be lost forever.

Arriving at the prison, he finds Mei Lin fighting for her survival, as a corrupted prison guard is trying to assassinate her. The latter is quickly taken care of by his bodyguard, despite the interference of Wang Qang, the Crown Prince's sidekick. Time to have a serious discussion with Mei Lin. Like he always does, he is going to play tough and heartless. He has been playing the Ghost General for years. Making her give up. He might have a chance.

First grant her a wish before putting her to death. She dodges it, saying : « I only have one wish in my life. I want to personally slay the true culprit of Qingzhou massacre. » Ok, let's take another chance. Maybe the fact that she's been tortured by him 10 years ago can put enough pressure on her to make her surrender. But again she replies : « You were torturing your self. You would rather bear the crime of a massacre, even if it means being despised by the whole world, than explain the the ones who set the Qingzou fire were not the real WeiBei army. The true Weibei army, even when face with an onslaught from the people, would turn their blades toward themselves. On the day I entered the city I saw it.»

Prince Jing is stunned, how could she perform the assassination attempt knowing all this? The death threat of the Momai poison must be the reason behind her actions. Indeed, it is. She also tells him that she stole a fake WeiBei army's token from the arsonist and promises to give it to him as soon as she is out of prison. Prince Jing must take the bait. It's been 10 years of preparation for this very day. At last, A proof of the mass murder resurfaces. He owes it to 100.000 dead civilians and the 30.000 of Weibei army. But that woman is a difficult safe to crack. Can he trust her. As he leaves, she suddenly utters :

« You and I are both living for the dead. If the wronged souls cannot rest in peace. We dare not die. »

She won. He will take the gamble. Save her life and get the token. He will play the perfect womanizer. Imperial father will certainly subject her to flogging instead of death penalty. Anyway, he has the whole city as witness of his lustful intentions toward the beauty. Mission accomplished, he can leave now.


Prince Yue Qin and Shu Muo decided to set up Mei Lin's prison escape. This would be done through the Dangguo cake box they use the day before. But this time they will temper with it by adding "fake death poison".

As soon as they arrive at the prison door, they see Prince Jing getting into his carriage. Prince Yue Qin gets paralized. Is he again too late. The words he told Princess Zigu on the day she arrived in Zhaoning are spinning in his head : « I am afraid in this life I will be fated to miss her ».

All of a sudden Shu Muo declares : « Master, we are a step late, it seems the fake death poison is useless now. »

I though YQ met ML for the first time in the cave. And that she was a random Qinzhou girl. Because his facial expression tells so. This is why his attraction for her appears so weird.

Poor woman, nobody ever cared about her. She is clinging on an assassin. Worst taste in men ever.

Did Mei Lin forgave Yue Qin?
I would not say that because she faked her own death to flee him.
She couldn't do any thing else YQ previously destroyed he martial arts skills.
Her only way out was the escape.

The first 3 episodes are a great exposition of story. They are breathtaking.

Plot hole why the smart Mei Lin became the dumb Mei Lin who could never recognize the evilness of YQ? Because chinese writers like to dumb down FLs as soon as they are in love.
Regarding Luo Mei, arghhhh I don't speak about her. Settleling suddenly for a bad guy like CP MRJH tsk tsk.
There might be cut scenes we did not watch.

This is the clues you get when you re-watch it. You are totally right, he didn't want or had to assassinate her. But he poisoned her with Momai poison because it was the exact poison CP MRXL henchman : war Minister Zhang Yin fed his Momai army when the set the Qinzhou arson. It was to incrimnate him and thus the Crown Prince. He knew that the only outcome for an assassination attempt in the court would be death penalty. That's why he asked his bodyguard to gave her a grand burial in Qinzhou, once the plan would be executed.
Unfortunatly, the Momai poison was lethal. The only antidote was the dragon flower but the seed was owned by the CP MRXL.
This is why MRJH tested an antidote and poisoned himself.

Yes Master of Shadow Works is MRJH.
He took 10 years to train Mei Lin to make an attempt assassination of himself, on the purpose of sowing doubt in his father's heart and causing a commotion so that his father has to reopen the Qinzhou case and he can finaly reddem the 30.000 ( I think) Weibei army soldiers, who died unjustly.

Later on the show, when he was already head over heels for Mei Lin, he tried to synthetize an antidote for Mei Lin, by using himself as a testing cobaye. This is where he poisoned himself.

What can I do Fiona? I find this drama so poetic. I love the morals (pay attention on what you do) + symbols of the show and it pleases me to re watch it. Despite the bashing it faces and the decrease of the ratings.
I guess some people don't like some characters, the ending and the fact that CP MRXL died too early on the 24th episode.

I will next watch FoF but meanwhile, I will re-watch daily one episode. Hopefully the audience will understand more of the show. I am hoping to see the rating stop decreasing.

Yes, exactly. She had previously kowtowed to the mother, telling her they broke up, beging her perdon and asking her to let the employees of the factory alone.
But the mother vowed to destroy her and her business.
And at that point of time, the mother came, in person, to sow discord.
Seeking trouble for someone who already dropped her cheating husband on the very day she met her.
Of course, she wanted her to be mad.
