I get your point but I think that romance brings another aspect in "The Double" . I have not watched "Nirvana in fire" yet ( just add it to plan to watch list).
This is a political / espionnage/ action k-drama with a sprinkle of romance. I couldn't agree more with you if it was for this drama because the story required it. The Male Lead especially.
But the story of "The Double" feels more open to me. And I truely appreciate the romance. I would say that the romance made sens due to the characters spychology. It even brought a new dramatic angle to the story.
I wanted her to be more cruel. Wanning is not only evil but one of those people who use their previous bad experiences…

So as evidently you disagree with history itself on the basis of feelings and hypothesis of yours. I have the impression that nothing can make you see the happy ending. Not the episode 40.5 nor the clues in episodes 40. And even less the symbolism.
