Absolute Best!

Hands down the best drama of 2026 for me!
This drama treats every character with so much respect. Everyone feels so real and alive. It really shows the constraints and helplessness of that era, but also the strength of women. Being a woman in feudal society was brutal; they were treated like commodities. In an age with such a strict hierarchy, it was genuinely hard for ordinary people at the bottom to survive. Everyone is just trying their hardest to live well and live earnestly. 😢😢
The details are insane. The two directors really knows how to shoot; the camera work pulls you right into the story. The beginning is super fun and satisfying, but the later it gets, the harder I cried. Literally cried or teary eyed in every episodes! 🤧😪

Best 2026 C-Drama

The heartbreak of Against the Current stays with you from the very first frame to the final credits.
• The Tragedy of Episode 1: Watching the devastation unfold was an absolute tear-jerker. The poignant, haunting visual of the women hanging in the chamber perfectly captured the sheer horror and despair of the Shen family’s sudden downfall.
• The Slap on the Wedding Day: While Jia Lan’s explosive defiance on her wedding night seemed shocking at first, it made total sense once the depth of the Lin family's past betrayal sank in. Her slap was the culmination of years of suppressed agony, carrying the weight of a proud noblewoman forced into servitude by the very people who abandoned her family to save themselves.
• The Bittersweet Deathbed Refusal: Even as Lin Jin Qi lay dying, looping the red thread around her wrist and pleading to reunite in their next incarnation, Jia Lan’s devastating reply that "one lifetime is enough" proved the ultimate truth: she never truly forgave the Lin lineage or fully healed from the trauma he caused.
• The Thrill of the Outwitting: The most satisfying highlights of the drama were undoubtedly the episodes where Jia Lan unleashed her brilliant strategic mind, effortlessly outmanoeuvring every greedy mistress, aunt, and adversary who dared to underestimate her.
• The Unfulfilled Justice: The biggest lingering regret of the finale was being denied the closure of seeing the Shen family name vindicated while Jia Lan was still alive. It was deeply tragic that the Lin family never had to face the reality that the "lowly maid" ruling over them was actually born a noble peer, forcing her to carry her true identity to the grave while justice waited over a century to finally clear her name.

I Wasn't Going to Let That Wedding Slap Slide… But That's Not the Whole Story.

I have a habit of questioning things while watching dramas. If something doesn't make sense, I can't just let it go. I need to figure out WHY. And this drama gave me plenty to investigate—from a wedding slap that felt out of character to a man who somehow ended up looking like a snowman within the palace grounds. Seriously, writers?

One reason I enjoyed Lanxiang so much is that she doesn't simply wait for someone to rescue her. She observes, assesses, and finds ways to handle difficult situations. I like characters who think their way through problems, so I kept wondering what solution she'd come up with next.

But that's also where the drama lost me at times. The wedding slap was one example. I understood Lanxiang's anger, but publicly slapping Jinqi felt inconsistent with the strategic, calculating person I'd come to know. I expected her to handle the situation in a way that reflected her usual ability to think things through. Her feelings made sense; her actions didn't. To me, the scene sacrificed character consistency for dramatic impact.

Han Liang's death was another moment that left me questioning the writing. He remained kneeling in the snow until two servants found him the next morning and wondered who had built a snowman. Within the palace grounds, of all places! I barely see him weaken or struggle against the cold, and nobody seems to have tried persuading him to leave. I understood the tragedy, but the lack of buildup made its execution difficult to believe.

Still, these flaws didn't define my entire experience of the drama. What the writing occasionally stumbled over, the performances and emotional moments often made up for. Lu Xuanyi's portrayal of Jinqi's grief was particularly moving. His crying didn't feel like the usual polished, restrained performance of a powerful general. Sometimes he cried like a boy who had lost someone precious, without trying to hide his pain. Those unguarded moments felt painfully real to me—as if I was seeing the person beneath the general's "armor".

And then there's the red thread. After spending so much time analyzing characters and questioning their choices, I wasn't prepared for how much that final image would affect me. I won't explain the scene because new viewers deserve to experience it for themselves, but it left me reluctant to say goodbye.

WOULD I RECOMMEND THIS DRAMA?
Yes. Where else can you admire a heroine for thinking three steps ahead, question a writing choice that makes her abandon that very strength, be moved by a general whose grief strips away his usual composure, and then you get ambushed by a red thread because you didn't expect it that way to happen? Lol.. That scene left me with such mixed feelings.

Against the Current: A Fascinating Protagonist Who Ultimately Becomes Difficult to Understand

Against the Current starts from a very appealing premise. Lanxiang is an intelligent, educated, and extraordinarily rational woman who, after her family’s downfall and humiliation, finds herself trapped in a marriage she initially does not want. Her conflict with Jinqi is particularly interesting because he is not simply the man who forces her into marriage: he is also the man who, when her family is in a vulnerable position, refused to marry her, only to later use the power of the imperial edict to impose that very marriage. It is therefore understandable that Lanxiang carries resentment and maintains an enormous emotional distance.

In fact, if the series had wanted to tell a story of revenge, it would have had an excellent foundation. But the story seems to want to go much further: to turn that forced relationship into a genuine love story while, at the same time, presenting Lanxiang as an example of female empowerment.

And this is where the problems begin.

Lanxiang is a complex character. She is capable of going to extraordinary lengths for the women around her, but when it comes to Jinqi, she seems to put up an almost impenetrable wall. He makes his feelings very clear, pursues her, waits for her, gives in and tries to get closer to her, while she rarely allows us to see what she truly feels. This is not about demanding a passionate relationship or turning her into someone she is not. The problem is that the series never really shows us the moment when resentment gives way to affection, and affection eventually becomes love.

That is why their first time together feels so strange. After so many years of marriage, it should feel like the culmination of an emotional journey. Instead, the scene gives the impression that they are simply going to “do their duty” because that is what is expected of them, and I find that rather sad. At first, you might think it is simply because she is an emotionally restrained character. But then you see how she behaves when she has to help women in trouble, and the lack of consistency becomes much more noticeable.

Perhaps that is why she creates such a contradictory impression: we want to admire her for her strength, but sometimes we wish she were a little less perfect, less rational, and more human.

Lanxiang teaches the other women to choose their own paths and not simply accept what others have decided for them. And yet she ultimately becomes a wife, mother, and matriarch within a family structure that, in principle, represents precisely what she was trying to escape.

That would not necessarily be a problem. An independent woman can absolutely choose to be a wife, a mother, and a matriarch. But the series has to show us that she chose it. And that is where something is missing once again.

Because if what we are watching is a revenge story, then having children and building a family life with Jinqi becomes difficult to understand. And if it is not revenge, but rather the story of a woman who eventually comes to love the man who initially forced her into marriage, then we need to see that process.

The series manages to show us perfectly how Lanxiang changes the lives of the women around her, but never manages to show us with the same clarity how she changes on the inside.

Brilliant first half, disappointing last half

Loved the first half until the wedding of the main leads. Went downhill after that. First half thought it was going to surpass Story of Minglan and Pursuit of Jade. Second half literally emasculated the ML. He was begging and scraping for affection right up to his death. Absolutely hated Lan Xiang’s treatment of her husband. No character growth, remained a cold fish & self righteous. When the poor guy said he wants to be married to her in next life, she didn’t have to say “one lifetime is enough” Her motto or the motto of the drama; “to live well”, I don’t think she lived well. Her heart never opened to love. I think her husband was worth of her love. She had the facts that it was not his fault to break the engagement, he made up for the mistakes of his family by burying her family and he treated her well. The writers totally spoiled a good story from the wedding on. Granted she could have been upset /angry a few episodes but not 20yrs after marriage. 4-6 years to consummate their marriage. This was totally childish writing. I really can’t stop raging. In Story of Minglan she was more or less forced into marriage too, but the writers allowed to grow and did not emasculate her husband Argh 😡
Just finished the drama and I’m like Meh!!
A woman doesn’t the man to be strong by you insulting the man. Dah he even buried your friend Scholar Han, no thank you.
I think an opportunity was lost in using her parents to help her in settling in the marriage, pointing out the good in her husband.
Sorry I keep going back to Story of Minglan; whose grandmother helped the FL to settle in her marriage and therefore “ LIVE WELL”

Second half of the drama is a humiliation ritual of the ML.

I am FURIOUS. And episodes 1 to 27 are the reason why.
Because those 27 episodes are almost perfect television. Tight writing. Gripping pacing. The kind of show that makes you cancel your plans, ignore your alarm, and binge until 3 a.m. WITHOUT GUILT. I was telling everyone to watch it. I was that person.

Then episode 28 happened, and I want my tears, my sleep, and my emotional investment back. Something went WRONG in that writers' room. I don't know if they changed writers or handed the script to people with an axe to grind but whoever wrote episode 28 and beyond had an AGENDA, and it's not subtle. I have been watching C-dramas for YEARS, and I have never seen a male lead assassinated like this. Not by an enemy. Not by betrayal. BY HIS OWN SCRIPT.

Let's call it what it is: the writers were so obsessed with propping up the female lead as untouchable, so determined to deliver a "girlboss" arc, that they decided the only way to lift her up was to saw the male lead off at the knees. That's not empowerment. That's not good writing. That's an agenda and the male lead's corpse was the offering on its altar.

They took a brilliant, strategic general a man who outsmarted everyone on the battlefield AND turned him into a SIMP.

From episodes 28 to 40, this man BEGGED. He chased. He pleaded. He bent over backwards for the smallest crumb of affection, while she gave him nothing but coldness and tests and the show framed it as devotion. DEVOTION? Every episode, she was handed the power, the moral high ground, and the wins, and he was handed kneepads. He lost every argument. She lost nothing. That's not romance that's a lecture, and the male lead was the cautionary tale.

And then it got WORSE because the show made his humiliation the entire POINT of the romance

SHE MADE HIM QUIT HIS JOB AS CAPITAL COMMANDER OF THE LEFT ARMY . Read that again. He gave up his position, his power, his ambitions everything he fought an entire first half to earn and protect and this show presented it as ROMANTIC GROWTH. No. That was the agenda's endgame, fully exposed the strong man had to be stripped of everything so the female lead could stand taller. A general without his command is just a man in nice clothes, and the drama expected a STANDING OVATION. I was standing, alright to throw something at my screen.

That's when it became undeniable. The writers decided the male lead's power was a PROBLEM to be solved instead of the very foundation of his appeal because in their worldview, a powerful man in love is a threat that must be tamed, humbled, and leashed. So they solved it. By amputating it. With a rusty knife. Slowly. This isn't character development it's ideological taxidermy stuffing a great character into a lesson about how men should submit.

And the FINAL insult the one that made me laugh in disgust? It took them FOUR YEARS. Four in-story YEARS to consummate this "romance." Another humiliation ritual for the male lead, packaged as a grand reward.

Amazing start, but the story fizzled.

Changed my review: The first 35 episodes of this series are phenomenal. I was all set to enjoy a truly epic adventure. The cast, the story, the production- loved all of it. And then it just stopped. They cut most of the important parts, especially pertaining to the development of relationships. They started jumping ahead months and years, from one crisis to the next. Over and over, we get thrown into the future with none of the warmth or affection that should be present in a story like this. They routinely skipped key developments and you just have to assume things happened. Even the ml discovering the fl’s true identity was a non-event. That was supposed to be a big deal. I’m not entirely sure how she started liking him. One episode she still hated him. The next episode they were holding hands. Then all of a sudden she was giving birth. She wasn’t ever pregnant. They just skipped a year or so again, straight to the birth. However, they kept all of the moral/ life lesson speeches. There are so many that it seems horribly forced. Lots of speeches about how life wasn’t fair for women. I know that, but I’d still like a story, please. I started with a rating of 10 from the start. And I slowly lowered it. Now I’m giving it a 5 and I’m not sure I’ll even finish it. To say that I’m disappointed is an understatement. Still love the cast and this wasn’t their fault. Hopefully their next projects will be more worthy of their skills.

The story started out so well.. had me hooked watching ep to ep due to the conflicts and tribulations every character was going thru.. then I dont know why the writers decided to take the path they chose with the ML.. they ended up making him weak and completely under the spell of the FL.. i think i wouldve been ok with it if the FL showed more affection towards the ML.. From beginning to end i felt zero genuine love from the FL towards the ML.. even them consummating their marriage felt so forced like it was her duty.. I get the story is female centered but you've been married to this guy for so long and been through so much.. not even telling him you have feelings for him? ML keeps telling her he genuinely loves and her only response is poker face.. literally all 47 eps.. The reason i gave this show an 8 is because of all the characters and their stories.. as for the ML and FL storyline ughh it was subpar.. Would I recommend this show? I guess i would so you could see what i mean. Would i rewatch it? Probably not. Once was enough to show my support for the actors i love on the show 💜

I'm calling it. This is the best drama I've seen in a long time. This drama did not test my patience or intelligence. It literally is perfection. 👏👏👏

Highly recommend, and if anyone is thinking of starting, savor every moment of it, cause you'll probably won't see another drama of this caliber. In the age of vertical dramas and AI generated dramas, the future of long dramas seems bleak. But Against the current still gave me some hope for long dramas in the future.

When Realism Outshines the Drama

I never thought I'd ever write a review on this platform but this drama has forced me to write one because I truly believe more people should watch the series which is a masterpiece in it's own right. Especially when I see the number of viewers for some of the most highly rated cdramas of this year on this platform which I've mostly had not that high of an opinion of and thought were full of plot holes and illogical choices and scenarios which really tested the tolerance of viewers for letting things go and just "trying to enjoy it". but this was so good that it even made me reevaluate my opinion on some other dramas that I've enjoyed very much such as love like galaxy, on many aspects which I won't go into here.

I'll try not go into anything specific and just give the overall thoughts on what makes this drama so special in my opinion.

Right after the first episode I instantly thought "this might be the best first episode of a cdrama I've ever seen" since so much happens and sets the tone and premise of the series perfectly. at the same time I was worried that it might struggle to keep the same quality till the end but the further in the story went I only saw improvements which is very rare in my experience with cdramas. Right after watching every episode I felt a desire to rewatch some scenes, many including the interactions between the fl and ml, before moving on to the next one. There are literally perhaps 10-20 minute long scenes in the series where you could watch many times and not feel bored.

I struggle with most cdramas when the the latter half of the story starts and often find myself watching them and 2x speed or more the closer we get to the end but this drama is truly different and keeps the quality of story telling and character development to the very end.

The story telling is detailed and masterful to the point where mostly every scene seems to have a specific purpose whereas in many cdramas we're often shown scenes seemingly important but never to be mentioned again. The story is very good and engaging without relying on repetition of viewer pleasing "tropes". Every character including the ones with least screen time is well thought out and developed, complex characters who are not one dimensional and bound to one specific characterization, a hero is not a saint, a saint is not perfect, a naive character need not stay naive and smart character is not bound to be always right..., point is that there is actual character development and characters are consistent as in for the choices they make, we can understand their reasoning within the character they've shown us.

The casting for the drama, starting from the leads to minor characters are on point and all do a wonderful job of the bringing the characters to life, especially our leads whose every micro expressions were perfect. It's amazing that I could watch some supporting characters and think they really can have a whole cdrama as leads for their characters and it will still be amazing.

The drama is heavily and I dare say mainly about conveying the hardships and difficulties of women in ancient time (or even in general) which I have to commend the director and writers for this since in many dramas I just find myself for lack of better word "annoyed" or just not convinced with how they would depict it! but in this drama it's truly masterfully done and makes viewers easily sympathize with what our characters go through and even the hardships of women in general.

Also I should say I heavily admire the the way this drama is directed and the stylistic choices that are made, especially when it comes to handling the time skips which some may think there is a lot of them but considering the scope of the story and the sense of realism I mentioned it actually makes perfect sense and it is in fact necessary!

In conclusion I truly believe this is one of a kind cdrama and a must watch for anyone who enjoys cdrama. In addition I have hope that this drama would be another turning point for future cdramas the way Joy of Life was, and elevate future cedrama projects in terms of quality and the care put into the story and characters.

Grow Like orchid

I’ve hardly watched any dramas starring Tan Songyun, but I’ve watched almost every period drama of Liu Xueyi, so honestly, I started this drama because of him. I came across the trailer about three weeks before the show aired, and I was completely awestruck by it. Little did I know that by the end, I would become such a fan of Tan Songyun’s character.

If you want to watch what women could do during the period times, this is definitely the drama for you. The female lead surprised me at every turning point. The way she handles every situation with such intelligence and calmness is honestly impressive.

Despite being a slave, her character never lets her circumstances define her. She constantly inspires you to work on yourself, never put yourself down, stand up for yourself, and, more importantly, stand up for others. There’s something really empowering about watching her grow and find her strength despite everything she has to face.

Since the drama has multiple characters and storylines, there’s always something happening to keep you hooked. I actually found myself waiting for the next episode every single day.

What makes this drama even more special for me is that it shows the lives of ordinary people during that period, rather than focusing only on nobles and the wealthy. Every episode brings something new to the storyline, and that keeps the drama interesting throughout.

I started this drama for Liu Xueyi, but I ended up staying for Tan Songyun’s character—and honestly, I’m not complaining. ❤️

disheartening

I found the story promising at first, but it went steadily downhill, eventually becoming exasperating and disheartening. The female lead is a strategic and interesting character, yet she remains extremely cold and devoid of affection toward the male lead right up to the very end. Their marriage was consummated hastily after four or more years of total indifference. Secrets were dragged out to the point of absurdity. I feel the male lead endured far too much, despite having no direct or obvious fault. All in all, I derived no satisfaction from watching this drama; it left me feeling deeply bitter and disappointed.
