Where Fantasy and Love Meet

I’m a sucker for shows that hook you from the very first moment, and even though I didn’t expect this one to do that, it absolutely did. I went in nervous because of the hype, especially with the sci-fi/fantasy + romance mix, but wow—this show was so worth it.

I wouldn’t fully call it sci-fi. The VR aspect at the start was honestly genius and a huge reason the show worked. Those VR episodes were stunning—the aesthetics, architecture, and vibes felt like a Republican-era fantasy blended into a modern drama. You really got two worlds at once. The VR outfits were gorgeous, the game concept was fun and well written, and the idea of escaping real life into another world was delivered perfectly. Every VR scene felt cinematic, like watching a movie.

Now the male lead—I’m so glad CXX is finally getting the recognition he deserves. He truly shined here. The small smiles, serious expressions, quirkiness, and shamelessness all worked perfectly. His broken character was portrayed beautifully, and honestly, he could pull off a psychopath role because of how well he conveys deep emotions. And the wardrobe? Insane. Runway-level looks, designer vibes, full model energy. Easily one of the best-styled male leads in a modern C-drama. Character-wise, he was a green flag with a revenge arc—passionate, layered, and very well written.

The female lead was one of my favorite LYX characters. She was mature but still had a youthful spirit, had a backbone, and went after what she wanted. I loved that she wasn’t the typical shy FL—she was confident, outgoing, and never backed away from him. Her cute moments never felt childish, and her emotional scenes, especially her crying, felt raw and real. Her character was genuinely well done.

The romance was one of the strongest parts of the show. Their chemistry was insane—natural, effortless, and believable. Their kissing and intimate scenes didn’t feel scripted at all, and I loved how the show fully invested in the couple. They didn’t shy away from closeness, and it made everything feel real. If you’re watching for romance, this absolutely delivers.

The second male lead surprised me a lot. I had such a love-hate relationship with him, but by the end I was really happy with how his story was redeemed. His character was clearly messed up, but the abuse and constant comparison from his father made it easy to understand why he turned out the way he did. He wasn’t a good guy, but he felt real regret, knew when to let go, and that made him feel human. A lot of this worked because of DX’s acting—if it weren’t for him, I don’t think I would’ve connected to the character as much. Plus the suits, the glasses, the charisma—he stole the spotlight more than once.

My favorite scenes were definitely the VR ones—they felt magical. The cinematography was dreamy, the production quality was high, and the OST fit perfectly. Everything looked beautiful.

As for complaints: I wish we had more VR scenes later on, the reveal could’ve been written better, and the FL’s outfits were hit or miss—especially compared to the ML’s flawless styling. And my biggest complaint: why only 28 episodes? I wanted more. I never got bored, even after they started dating.

Overall, this show is 100% worth the hype. I’d recommend it to anyone who loves romance with a fantasy twist. Beautiful characters, amazing chemistry, stunning cinematography, a great OST, and no dragging. Easily one of the best C-dramas of 2026 and such a strong start to the year—a show that really stays with you.

Top-notch romance drama with great chemistry

Love Between Lines is a superbly well-written, quality TV that combines romance, family drama, and suspense in a way where it’s just the right amount of everything and you want to keep watching even when you have to get up for work at the crack of dawn.

Our main characters Xiao Zhi Yu and Hu Xiu meet during a murder mystery game. Then their lives intersect in reality. As they navigate their roles in the game, they also begin to uncover each other’s true selves in reality.

This part I absolutely adored—how the story masterfully intertwines their fictional interactions with their real-life encounters. Whoever wrote the dialogues between Xiao Zhi Yu and Hu Xiu is a genius. The fact that they could tell each other some things and could be what they wanted to be in the game when they couldn’t in reality was a very nicely set parallel.

You really feel for both characters as you watch the drama because they both have so much to overcome and deal with in their lives. Xiao Zhi Yu has been living his entire live pretty much as someone else. And Hu Xiu couldn’t do what she always wanted to do and things finally are starting to change when they meet each other.

You also know early on—as you witness them falling in love—about the revelation of how they are actually sort of connected through past events. You know it’s going to ruin them when you find out, but you keep on watching anyway through all your anxiety because their interactions are just so swoony.

Thankfully, the hated third act break up did not last long.

The best part is that the romance between the leads is very well executed.

It’s a healthy, mature kind of relationship you’d want for yourself. It has none of that nonsense about purity you sometimes see in a C-Drama where women are often portrayed like they’re just sitting and waiting for that one guy. I liked that writers left it up to our imagination in terms of their previous partners/relationships, if they had any. Sometimes when romance culminates writers like to show women in their 20s as very inexperienced, which is extremely unrealistic. The silly “shy the morning after” moments absolutely drive me nuts.

So I enjoyed the fact that here this was presented to us. We just had two people in love going with the flow and simply enjoying being with each other without being prude about it. Who and what came before did not matter.

Other aspect I appreciated in the romance was how Xiao Zhi Yu recognized Hu Xiu's talent and genuinely supported her, allowing her to shine in her own right. This dynamic added depth to their relationship and showcased a refreshing take on C-Drama romance. Yes, they in general had a bumpy beginning with him being that typical grumpy male lead that felt almost red-flag-ish but that never came to fruition. And I’m happy. There were some hurdles to overcome, his initial rejection of her, to be exact, but I liked that it didn’t take long for things to get resolved. I liked that they both fought and won their personal battles along the way too. I like that she was also assertive of what she wanted.

Oh, and I have to mention that Love Between Lines features one of the best on-screen first kiss setups. I literally squealed and had to rewatch that scene twice! It was very well done. The music, the moment, the emotions, the entire leading up to it, the background, the colors, the camera angles.

It’s also worth mentioning that the backdrop of the architecture business and the competitive spirit that surrounded it was very interesting and added another layer to the drama. I don’t always like the business aspects added to romance, but when they are well done, they end up being quite entertaining and interesting.

All the side characters were wonderfully developed (especially Pei Zhen; he had a great character arc and I’m glad to see he didn’t follow his father’s path) and had their right place in the story. The camera work was amazing, especially during the game scenes. The whole sequence was just so dreamy.

We also did not have any non-essential characters getting a bunch of screen time for no reason just to make sure there’s content. Every scene was important and easy to watch and I did not skip much except for maybe some of the scenes between Zhao Xiao Rou and her husband. I think too many episodes were wasted on their storyline just to set up the divorce, and if the plan was to pair her up with Gong Huai Cong, it felt kinda incomplete because we were sort of left hanging at the end. I would love a bit of a closure for her or perhaps a scene where she meets her ex later down the road and it’s clear that she has someone else (someone better) just to rub it into his face because he did her so dirty. But it’s not something that’s going to affect my rating.

It’s still a 10 out of 10 for me. If you want good romance, watch it. Definitely MY top 10 contemporary romance C-dramas.

One of the best romantic C-drama. All the things I look forward in a drama is in it.

I really loved this drama. The story, direction, actors, romance, lots of kisses, engagement—everything is in it. It’s such a fun-packed, thrilling series with so many goosebump moments. I absolutely love the ML; he is incredibly handsome, and the FL is equally adorable and beautiful. Both of them truly lived their characters, and their chemistry was bombastic, with very beautiful romantic scenes. I was hooked from the very first episode and keep rewatching it again and again. For me, it’s a fully packed, perfect series

Such a banger

Lu YiXiao is the best…she s so gorgeous and simple….and so is the male lead….they have a lot of chemistry…loved the FL character and I wish that the male lead can be a bit clingy towards her as she definitely likes him a lot….its such a good drama that can make your day…am rooting for both the male leads😭 she definitely has chemistry with everyone she acts
I also suggest please watch love in the clouds as the FL is the same there

Overhyped

This platform has a tendency to overhype shows of mediocre viewings. This drama presents a unique storyline with the VR and mystery game concept but it's also not really important in the story,it setves no fundamental essential plotline and only serves as a backing to introduce our main couple. In all honesty i found myself enjoying the 2nd fl story more than this entire thing. Her divorce arc was generally the only thing that kept me entertained. We have seen this story multiple times boss and employee secret romance and the ml has a hidden secret . I could pinpoint 10 shows with this exact storyline all over so why is this one trendy?
I have to admit they have nice good chemistry with good kissing scenes and a strong rapport but that wasn't enough to keep me interested at all.
This is just an average drama that casted 2 beautiful people the end.

I took the bait, I give it 8.

I know a lot of people loved this one, but it fell flat for me after the first third. They could have done so much more with Rongcheng. The collapsed mall plot felt distracting. I know that was the major point of the show, but I just had no patience for it. The side characters (except Pei) felt flat to me. I think the show runners tried too hard to be different, without actually fully executing that.

Things that worked well:

- the music ⭐
- the chemistry between the leads (arguably, they both have tremendous chemistry with anyone they star with lol)
- the IDEA of the VR game... they just did not maximize the potential

Things that were frustrating:

- XZY's mom
- Hu Xiu's dad getting hit by a car subplot
- The plot with Zhao Yan's husband... felt so unnecessary to go through all that just to make her single so that XZY's friend and she could be a second couple. Bunch of fluff.

Sorry, guys. This one was better than some moderns, but it did not impress me. I would give it a 7.0 but I think the cast performed well (as best as they could with this script).

Yes!

I really enjoyed this series. The virtual reality elements/design hooked me in and I thought the storyline was interesting. A cool way of showcasing the beauty of old vs new architecture. I was never really big on architecture but was fascinated with the elements shown in the series. Very nice! The romance between the ML and FL was sweet and developed naturally (although frustratingly slow for me lol) and loved the different relationship dynamics and the contrast between familial love shown in the FL side vs the ML side. I was invested in all of the characters stories too, the actors did a good job in keeping me hooked all the way through! Thank you 🤗

A bowl of Ramen

This drama is like eating a simple bowl of ramen, with just noodles and sauce.....no vegies, no crushed peanuts and no soft boiled egg.....no wow factor. The only stand out's for this drama for me, was concept of the murder mystery train virtual game, which was cleverly done and the FL's super expressive face. I felt it was too long, and honestly I skipped through the last two episodes. Usually the happy ending is the best part, but it was just so predictable, I really lost interest. Sure it had lots of sweet Hallmark moments, which get's boring to me after a while.

The leads, while they did a good job playing their parts, had very little physical chemistry and even the kissing was kinda... mhhh. Spice level barely even registered for me. If you are in the mood for some simple ramen, this will work for you, but not a re-watch for me.

good vibes only

This was an incredibly enjoyable watch. So much so that I binged the whole thing in a day. It includes so many cliche tropes known to romance genre but they are very well used. Incredibly rich guy with generational wealth meets the financially struggling girl with bubbly personality and a passion for architecture which happens to be his job and from that moment, the universe decides these two need to coincidently connect many many many times. They end up being neighbors and wouldn't you know also co workers. This trope is so old fashioned I didn't know I can enjoy it still but I did. I wasn't even trying to guess the next thing,( something I've been doing unconsciously, ruining many dramas for myself) even blocking any guess you could say. I was just enjoying the moment. Seeping in the beautiful visuals of Shanghai city and main leads chemistry.
It has a decent plot, amazing performances from actors, gorgeous cinematography, memorable dialogue and maintains a good pace through out. The story itself is nothing revolutionary but its told well. And big kudos to styling department especially for the scenes from the game. Hu Xiu has many dresses I love to steal.

Let talk about the game: Its the best part of the story both visually and story wise. Its a murder mystery pretend game in republic era where players are given instruction cards explaining their fake identities and missions. Our male lead has a secret second job as an important NPC in this game as an cutthroat general and female lead loves playing it mostly to have a chance at defeating said general.

First of all if such game existed around me I would be broke. The setting is so gorgeous its crazy.
Second of all it was a great concept for the story. They go there to escape reality. To finally be in control of what goes on their lives. As they get to know each other the two worlds start bleeding into one another forcing them to confront realities they were running from but at the end everything turns out just fine. One learns to communicate the other learns to draw boundaries

From then on its just more tropes getting piled up. Especially the love triangle here is on old formula. Early 2000s kdrama loved this. You can see that it was written with care. The plot is cohesive making you root for characters and no character is unnecessary. The writers enjoyed writing and actors enjoyed playing this tropey story so we enjoy it too.

Pleasantly Surprising!

This is a pleasantly surprising drama and exactly what is needed to cool down from passionate and dramatic hangovers from high intensity or emotionally triggering series like SAL or TFF.
I started watching with zero expectations, but there it was offering a bit of family, a bit of neighbourly "lane" living in a quaint little house with an attic, and two architects making it their home together for a brief while, there that's how the drama pulls you in!! Republican era virtual game played a big role in setting up the intrigue and attachment between the CP in the initially episodes, quite successfully too! Some elements became repetitive later on but we can give it a pass for the sake of ml's mysterious stares and fl's audacious challenges in return - the push and pull in the game itself to one up each other is quite entertaining!

FL's home is a character of its own, quite in contrast to ML's sparse , spacious apartment. In a way , capturing the bright cosy unencumbered personality of the fl versus the stoic, controlled, sharp subterfuge of the FL. It works really well, but without stirring too many feathers, they are comfortable to watch, having a natural agreeableness without getting overshadowed by overt passion or eagerness. They are just naturally, beautifully existing in each other's lives.
Second ml proved to be quite predictable and felt like a forced villain, He looks uncannily too much like Kang Ha Neul to form any major hatred towards frankly! Senior Peng on the other hand , the entire "bring to justice" story line is a bit forced in the second half and is definitely a weak point in the drama.

It would not be fair if we don't talk about the amazing female friendship depicted in this series. Not only are fl and 2nd fl unconditionally available for each other, but they also don't have impractical expectations from each other. I am here for the women supporting women in any and all choices made, in how independent and responsible both of them are, and how dependable their friendship is. Pure and solid foundation of love and acceptance! A wonderful part of the drama is watching them both being trustworthy friends!
It is hard to watch the cheating angle of the 2nd pair but i must appreciate how realistically it was depicted. Thank you writers, no waaaa waaaan crying, one person realising what a big mistake it was and accepting the consequences like an adult and the other facing her reality and moving on ! the Space they give each other, a tragic ending to otherwise what was a good marriage!

Lu Yu Xiao comes off as extra charismatic in contemporary setting, hope she will do some more modern dramas.
This is my first drama of Chen Xingyu. He can pull off the serious coded actor vibe, not too sure about the romance aspect. I find him to be a bit limited in range, but if anyone can suggest more of his dramas I'll be happy to explore.

Highly recommended for anyone looking to avoid heartaches, heartbreaks, or having attachment issues. Go for it!

Like a Kiss on the Forehead

Love Between Lines doesn’t try to reinvent romance or offer anything groundbreaking, but it doesn’t need to. What it delivers is a well-told love story, filled with coherence, tenderness, and emotional sincerity.

At first glance, a romance-centered drama like this might seem as if it would rely on flat or underdeveloped characters. For me, the opposite is true. One of the show’s greatest strengths is how its characters (and their personal growth) move the story forward. There is a quiet complexity in each of them, especially when you take the time to look at their values, motivations, and emotional logic.

While romance remains at the core, the inclusion of light mystery elements and the VCR storyline adds dynamism and narrative momentum without ever overshadowing the central relationship. These aspects enrich the story rather than distract from it.

What truly made this drama stand out for me was the cast, the cinematography, the music, and the warmth with which everything comes together. The protagonists meet at a crucial moment in their lives, and without relying on forced clichés or destiny tropes, the story presents two adults with lived experiences, emotional baggage, and personal histories who simply meet and fall in love.

Watching Love Between Lines felt like a gentle kiss on the forehead. Like watching the sunset from a rooftop. Like the warmth of the sun on your skin. Quiet, comforting, and deeply memorable.

Mature loveable leads

China is really cranking up the game on their dramas these last few years, been watching them alongside Korean and Japanese dramas this last 6 years, and you can tell the difference. In fact I’m probably consuming more chinese shows than ever before. Love it!

Chemistry in this show was off the charts, great casting for everyone except the parents in both sides, they were just major disappointment from start to finish.

My only issues with this show was the handling of the friends husband, it didn’t seem legitimate (the reason) nor well executed (the divorce) which seemed like a nice tidy insta way to get rid of him to make way for the friend. I wish that plot would have been written differently or more drawn out. He didn’t fight for her one bit and it didn’t sit right the rest of the show. It’s not like he was philandering and desperately trying to get out of his marriage. I’m not taking off a star for that though, what I did do though was remove one for the absolutely ridiculous trope of “we must break up because someone close to you may have done something bad so you take all the blame naturally even though you were a literal child” trope. I can’t stand it. Especially when the writers have given us an extremely mature plot thus far. She went from I’ll always stand by you, to, I’m not even going to let you explain and walk out of his life in a hot flash. Disappointing. At least it didn’t last too long, but it was ridiculous.
