Amazing fight scenes, good backstories, interesting characters, great production quality and an entertaining plot that made this series quite addictive to watch. I truly hope this gets the success it deserves.
LOVE Iroha and Kamuikocha
Generally the samurais were people that always fascinated the west and well everyone, if we are being honest, so it is natural that they would like to make this one available everywhere.
"Their local network productions simply don't want to invest this much money on a TV project" -> Yes, exactly. I mean many Jdramas are pretty low cost anyways, so they would never invest much on this one that needs a HUGE budget. Even if they made it somehow, the final result would not be the same.
I feel like they don't care much about series production in general. Even though they have some really good series, especially some older ones, with fantastic plots, they don't invest in them at all.
Netflix recently made an agreement with a japanese ''channel'' to have some of their series. It feels like they don't care that much about expanding their influence in this aspect and that is one of the reasons why many Jdramas are extremely hard to find especially subbed.
I feel the people working on these projects care, but also they don't have the money to do better. Japanese originals on netflix have japanese crews, but they also have the money to make something better than what we usually watch.
Cinema is different there like in most countries.
I feel the same. I think this one is doing well.
Yes, 1899 was cancelled because it didn't do well and was basically a financial disaster. Here they also invested lots of money, but I am also more optimistic they won't cancel it. But I don't trust netflix until I see an official announcement.
What I said is that it's not weird for people to compare SG with other death game series(/media) they watch, because currently it is just very popular and everyone knows about it.
I don't think anything will ever ''surpass'' Battle Royale, simply because like you also mentioned it was what defined the genre in itself.
For me though, series like SG or AIB are very good in their own way and even though they are both death game series and inspired one way or another by the theme of BR, they give the audience something new and refreshing.
Defining production will always be battle royale, cause that is what made this sub-genre popular. That can't really change, even if something much better comes out.
But what is also true is that SG was the series that introduced this type of genre to many people so it is defying in its own way. That doesn't mean it's better, but I don't think it is wrong to say that both are quite important to this genre for different reasons.
Lastly, sharing what you know with others is okay. There are definitely ignorant people or people who are looking for a fight, but that must always be done in a respectable way. It is okay to inform someone about BR, but diminishing something else to do it is not the right way.
When someone for example mentions SG, many people instead of being nice and educating them like you mention they go like "You are wrong, this one is much better you know nothing" or like you mentioned and I mean that in no offense cause I don't feel that was your purpose say "it is an insult to compare this one to SG" you are not gaining anything and you are becoming one of the people you hate. Both series can be good in their own way and at least for me even though both SG and this one have similarities cause they belong to the same sub-genre, in their core they are also very different, so why is it bad to enjoy both or even compare their main themes?
1. Many people may say they know lots about this genre, but in reality they may just want to diminish something they don't like, by making themselves sound like exprerts. I have seen tons of comments of people only praising one work in an attempt to diminish anything similar. Of course I have seen people saying things you mention, but that comes both ways.
2. "Even projects that came out before the Squid Game were accused of copying the Squid Game." -> That's plain ridiculous. But there are also two parts in this -because I have also seen such comments-. (1) Some people may just be ignorant and don't mean anything bad by it and they understand if there is a simple explanation -without starting cursing them and making them feel like idiots- (2) There are people that won't care no matter what you say to them, so they are not worth talking to and for me these people don't deserve any attention and they shouldn't cause anger to anyone cause they simply are very stubborn or (many times) are just trolls.
3. "It's not about inspiration, but about copying." -> I disagree on this. Every work out there may have an "original" but even that original may be inspired by sth else. It's not copying. It's taking an idea and making sth new out of it. Even if we want it or not, thats how most media works.
So for me the right word would be that it is inspired by many death game media. Like everything else. let's be real. There are tons of series coming out each year and many of them have very similar plotlines. If we waited to watch only truly original things that we have never seen again, then we'd watch nothing at all.
Lastly, I get being frustrated by some ignorant people, but the thing is that it's gotten to a point that if someone says something people go "But this one is so much better you have no taste etc". I have seen both comments. I have seen the ignorant people you mention about SG, but I have also seen people that just want to pick a fight by answering someone that "[insert movie/series ec here] is better you know nothing"
At the end of the day, anyone can say their own opinion. We can either tell them our opinion or ignore them. Even the commenter makes a comparison saying this is much better, saying it's an insult for someone to compare it with SG. Why though? If someone likes SG better or any "SG" are they wrong? Why is it impossible to like both when each has its strengths?
Again it's not that easy and that depends on a lot of things.
To have a similar production to this, if netflix cancels it, they must find another big sponsor and again sell it to another big platform. Cause no matter how big this gets in Japan they will probably not make more than the money they invested and no one invests in something just to end up losing money, so they will have to go international or have a lower budget.
That aside, there is also the "legal" part in the middle. Who has the rights for the adaptation? How much will the rights cost? What is the contract they have with Netflix? We can't know these.
For me, the important part here is to keep the same cast and same production quality if this has another season. Of course it is not impossible, but if someone else makes it it will probably take more time and it the final result may be completely different.
Comparing this to SG is not wrong. Both series are in the same sub-genre, and because of the genre itself they both have quite a lot of similarities.
Just because someone doesn't have much ''experience'' in a genre, that doesn't mean their opinion is not valid at least to a certain point.
If I had to mention only two, I really love Iroha and Kamuikocha.
