Ok so a solid first episode, I definitely think the production and editing is done really well. New is doing a…
Kuea wants Hia to love him. He wants to marry for love. But he doesn't think Hia would love his rebellious side since Hia is so strict and business-minded.
Arranged marriage is not legally binding in Thailand - but their families arranged it because they were giving in to Kuea's whims and trusted that Hia would always take care of Kuea. In fact, Kuea was the first one to mention marriage in that scene - and his grandpa was kinda giving off a "whatever makes you happy" vibe despite up till then it seemed like just a promise to always be there for each other. But they did ask Hia repeatedly if he was doing it out of love - meaning they did want it to be out of love, and not just obligation.
But Hia feels indebted to the family (they helped his family gain status and wealth and opportunity, and treated him like a son), and responsible for Kuea (this kid that he's always been expected to take care of, and who recently went through a ginormous loss). So it's not out of love (yet), nor is it out of monetary gain - but rather out of a sense of responsibility (one that I don't think Kuea's family meant for him to feel).
It's definitely not - for one thing, Thailand still hasn't legalized same-sex marriage yet. For another, it seems…
Yea, I've been noticing alot of BL shows really emphasizing gay marriage lately (and Not Me even included a petition in one of their episodes for citizens to sign) - I think it's to help persuade people to the cause.
And yea, I think it is a bit utopian mixed with traditional - this idea of an arranged marriage between two youngsters who are really fond of each other and can be with each other through thick-and-thin in the future. In other Asian media, we see this turn into a sworn brother situation if between two men, but they're doing an engagement (like they would if it was a woman and a man).
I think maybe I had expectations for this that were too high, but I was disappointed. Except Zee's shower scene. There's…
I wonder if the auto-mechanic work is like a specialization/concentration that he is taking. It is after all, what he's interested in. Also, engineering plots are very popular in Thai media, so I doubt they'd make such a ridiculous blunder. And I think the idea is that Hia is not like normal CEOs, he and his family worked themselves up to it - which I think is part of the reason Kuea is so upset with him. He keeps scheduling things on top of their dates when he could just as easily have other people take care of it. And if a factory did make such a ginormous error like it seems to be, especially if it was early in the chain of production - they would be on their radar.
And about Kuea - I think every single show with an aristocat/politician/etc family (and some real life families, if media can be believed) has someone who is like Kuea in mannerisms. For one, he's been away from his aristocratic duties for a long time. Two, that's his personality and his family seems to have always spoiled him in that regard (which is the reason the engagement came to be as well). And third, he's quite possessive of Hia - and he's starting to crack under the pressure of not being able to show it to Hia's face.
The reason for the engagement was a few things: 1.) Kuea's family were giving in to Kuea's whims - and they did keep checking in with Hia about whether he was doing it out of love for Kuea, indicating that on their end they wanted it to be out of love, even if arranged. 2.) But Hia always avoided that question - because he (at least right now) is in it because he feels indebted to the family for helping to make them have their social standing and opportunities, and responsible to Kuea as this kid he always had to look after.
So, i'm not sure where the confusion about the marriage plot is coming from - we spent a rather significant portion of this episode on it (perhaps even too much).
About the engagement between the two male kids, is that even realistic? I'm just curious cause I don't think thailand…
It's definitely not - for one thing, Thailand still hasn't legalized same-sex marriage yet. For another, it seems like arranged marriages have more or less fallen out of style in Thailand (especially in urban communities).
Tbh ngl I thought hia would find his identity in ep 7/8 lmao it’s pretty fast hehehehehe LOVING IT
Same! And even if Hia found out quickly, i thought Kuea would still try to maintain his double identity - but it looks like he reveals it next episode. So it looks like the main driving trope will be forced cohabitation, rather than the double identity. A little different than what i was hoping for - but still looking forward to it.
Wow, Diao's relationship seems quite toxic. He's like a kept boy - and they're not even married. I get it, Hia Li would be upset about the lies, but still - to the point of keeping track of whether Diao's in school?! They need a dynamic shift just as much as the mains.
Due to the cultural significance of this show being centered around Kathoey individuals (not necessarily trans individuals) - i think it's important to prioritize THEIR voices and how they perceive this show. So everyone, please drop the socials of your favorite Thai Kathoey, Trans, Intersex, etc. celebs, creators, and reactors so we can pay attention to them and their responses as this show starts rolling out.
I'm really tempted to watch this but holding off because of BL content.. please help me out here, are the two…
It's gay, but in a read-between-the-lines subtext kind of way. There have been a number of fans who apparently missed it all together. It's censored, and even in the original work, romance is not the main plot line. I think you'll be fine.
I just now found the interview from the juniors' actors! Figured i'd share for anyone else who missed this bit of content: https://youtu.be/vhlDr9z9SIg

Are the episode previews what you are talking about?
I'm referring to the pilot trailer for the show that was released Dec 2020 in which Dan is beating up the gang. The one that people have been freaking out over for the past several days (and so I thought you were too): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nwh5M2uWDmM
So i see that the One31 youtube channel is posting the episodes - but they dont have eng subs. Does anyone know any other official release platform with eng subs?
Also after the trailer I’m sure Dan is most likely to betray them
The pilot trailer was done to see if there was an audience. It was only meant to give a general gist and vibe for the series. They had yet to fully sit down with the script, or start filming. It is not representative of the series as it exists now - and has done been contradicted many times in the aired episodes.
I am worried by the trailer, but perhaps it may use the tropes and stereotypes to actually say something? We really don't see enough Kathoey characters in Thai media, especially nuanced and/or main characters.
Also, I wanna remind everyone that while the english subtitles keep switching back and forth between crossdressers and trans (which would be insulting through a Western lens), the actual term is kathoey - it's Thailand's 3rd gender that encompasses several western identities: intersex individuals, crossdressers (straight or gay), feminine gay men, and trans women (although my research suggests that many post-transition trans women go by other terms to distance themselves from this identity). Some previous BLs often translated the term as "Ladyboys" - which got a lot of pushback from western audiences. We do not have an equivalent term or perspective in English (I personally think its a term we shouldn't try to translate period, because of this reason), so please try to keep an open mind!
I feel like the translation is going to screw it up. It looks like they're using drag/trans as interchangeable…
Yea, it's one of those words that I feel shouldn't be translated - because we don't have an even remotely close equivalent. Kathoey is classified as a third gender, covering so many different western identities.
You know what might be kinda funny moving forward... Black is gonna have to relearn not to recklessly throw himself into danger again. Because White is within psychic range again. White will feel everything that happens to him. And considering how rough a shape White was in when Black went into his coma, and when he had the seizure/heart attack - he really can't be casual about the possibility of death anymore.
