Both my parents were born in Madagascar and if you've ever met a person from that country, they usually have long ass names that are just impossible to pronounce if you're not familiar with the language ( both my parents are mixed from both sides so they actually have short names that are not of malagasy origins.)... Sad but very common story. The issue is, if you adopt the roman system... then it must be adapted to your language, otherwise you won't ever be able to have proper transcriptions:
Spanish have some specific characters, French has some specific characters, Vietnamese has some specific characters and so on... I never came across Filipino writing but based on what you wrote, it's the basic 26 letters with no specific characters hence the issue when transcribing specific sounds that are unique to your language.
On a side note, I tried watching a Filipino series once but gave up. I was just very annoyed。 I don't understand the language so I needed subs... BUT there was a LOT of English mixed... and I HATE to read subs when I understand what people are saying, especially when sometimes the English subs didn't even correspond to the characters were saying... Problem is my eyes just go to the subs when there're subs. Anyway, I struggled for something like two episodes and gave up.

Ah Ok. That's a US thing then. In Europe only the "Free" (with practically nothing) and "Standard" is available... From what you wrote, basically the Standard in Europe is the equivalent of the "plus" in the US.
Kokowa... is a bit of a peculiar case. Most shows from Kokowa are available with the Standard option here... But I've noticed since last year that a couple of shows are not available on Viki in Europe at ALL such as currently airing Kick Kick Kick, and Nothing Uncovered which aired last year. I personally don't care aboutwatching these shows so, not a big loss... And there's all these K-movies that Kokowa has... I'm not really sure but I think it's possible to pay for them individually here.

Hmm. Your comment is regarding relationship representations in general though. The issue I think is more regarding young viewers. Dramas are selling you a fantasy, as long as people are aware that this type of relationship is extremely rare in real life ( honestly I've met some couples who married their first love, still together even in their 60s and living the good life with a couple of disputes here and there but literally very much drama style love, so I know it exists... Side Note: I once asked a Korean teacher about the 애 and 에 pronunciation. As a native French speaker, getting both these sounds down is one the trickiest thing I had to learn. In essence, most of the time in French, the difference between both sounds doesn't matter EXCEPT on some key words for which if you mispronounce, you're bound to sound very weird.
So where am I getting at with this long explanation? Well the Korean teacher I talked to told me that it DIDN'T MATTER how I pronounced these words. We didn't get into a long discussion over it but the bottom line ( and a couple of years of practice after) is... regarding that pronunciation "issue", Koreans are probably like the French. It matters on only certain words, hence the fact that Hae Song is confused.
