I think that you gave to much power to Princess Zi Gu. Indeed, she could speak to the Emperor of Great Yan. But all you stated happened because of Prince Yue Qin.
He was an Hostage Prince since his young age in the palace ( probably 10 years before ,because it is after Qingzhou massacre ). He is manipulative and cunning. He just, first and foremost leveraged his knowledge of the Emperor, who he knew for years, manipulating him. So he created situations that he knew, the Emperor could not oppose. In my opinion, with or without Princess Zi Gu, the outcome would be the same.
If you remember, Prince Yue Qin never won a GO game during all the time he was an hostage at the palace, playing opposite the Emperor. The day he was leaving the palace to go to Xiyan to fight for the throne, he won. This shows how cunning and manipulative he is.
Honestly Princess Zi GU was a dumb girl, who did not know what love is. So she thought that, thinking about someone meant she was in love with that person. She listened to idiocy, and the Emperor as well was idiot enough to let himself be manipulated for more than 10 years by Prince Yue Qin.
I am re-watching the drama to find loop holes and incoerences. But to me the plot makes sense until now. The Xyian arc made sense because it was announced in episode 6. Mei Lin is a clever character. When she was alone, she could understand a lot of things. But after she teamed up with Prince Jing she relied on him after he told her ( I am paraphrasing here) : " You are very strong and intelligent. You could win in the world but in the royal palace against the Crown Prince, you will never win." Something like that.
From that point of time, she became a soldier and obeyed. To me this also makes sens. Because the plan of MRJH was to make the Emperor re-open the Qingzhou case. So it was about Law and Trial. Mei Lin could not be competent in that area. She had to rely on Prince Jing. It was not a duel between the eastern palace guards and the Shadow Works Faction.
Honestly now that I re-watch it everything is logical. The Only thing I don't like is the length of the Xiyan arc. It is too long in my opinion.

As for the decree. There was no need the void the decree. Prince Yue Qin, gave her a divorce few days after she arrived in Xiyan. And when Prince Yue Qin locked her up in Xiyan ( after divorcing her, to force her to love him) She faked her death and fled the Xiyan's royal family. So basically, Mei Lin died in Qingzhou ( while YQ and her were on official state visit) and she came back to Great Yan with a new identity :Miss Yan ( if I remember well).
On episode 15 : So far so good, a great drama with peculiar characters.

I am amazed that, the antagonist Master Cui ShiJiu, despite being a one-dimensional character, is still playing the part of a SML. That beautiful woman impersonates a man. But she is impulsive and evil. Moreover, the writer didn't bother to give her a woman's temper. She is all about arrogance and self publicity. Because she wants to be recognized by her father. A woman, would never act like that. A woman would prioritize the success of the mission before any recognition.
She is a great actress at playing that part, but her character is a very simplistic SML type of character.
About Female Lead. I am very pleased by the Zhao Lu Si's depiction of Duan Wu. It is my first drama watching her. I feel that, she is one of the best actress out there. She is very nuanced. This is beautiful to watch.
Duan Wu is clever and she can read the room. That allows us to witness her growth as a woman, and honestly I am rooting for her success as a merchant. I have no doubt she will fight her way to success. She has a sassy personality and how I love her interactions with Male Lead.
Moreover, her identity must be uncovered. She has to take back what belongs to her legally.
That type of "quest" is something every professional woman can relate to : success in the workplace. That thematic is universal. So, no wonder so much viewers want to follow her journey.
As for Male Lead Liu Yu Ning (Yan Zi Jing) I loved him in "A journey to love". I honestly like his cleverness and his patience in executing his revenge plan. To be honest, his schemes are not very elaborate but it is still nice to see him win everytime.
I guess that a hero has to face a very difficult villain to beat, in order to become an astonishing hero : the villain elevates the hero!!
In this case, unfortunatly the antagonist is that one-dimensional Master Cui ShiJiu. So Yan Zi Jing could not be extraordinary.
But I still appreciate his journey.
Apart from them, I really like the child actor "shrimp" who was in "the double" as well. He is very refreshing and talented. And also really cute. I am happy to see him again.

I asked the question because some maids after she died refered to her as Empress. And she had to live to be crowned Empress. So this is not a sad ending at all. She survived at least 5 years after the first snow ( to harvest the antidote) , at most 15 years when MRJH died.
