Unexpectedly Heavy Yet Emotionally Entertaining
Twelve Letters follows the story of two young people in 1991 who meet as classmates, fall in love, and promise to face all difficulties together. In 2026, other people meet because their lost parents seem connected to each other. The "couple" from those two era later communicate through letters sent via a mysterious mailbox. They try to uncover what happened in 1991 and prevent a tragic event happening. At first, I expected it to be just a usual fantasy melodrama, but from episode 1, we're already shown heavy topics including domestic violence, gang fights, and other social issues. The series progresses really slowly, but it unfolds every layer of the mystery very well, keeping me intrigued throughout. The plot is solid and the story is really hits hard emotionally, but for me it's not too difficult to watch, they also include some cute banters that made me smile. The ending was great as well.
The cinematography is amazing, capturing different sides of China beautifully, the rivers and mountains in 1991, and the Beijing winter scenes in 2026. The cast's acting is superb, I felt every of their emotion, the leads' conversations feel both sad yet heartwarming.
Overall, it was something unexpected for me at first, but after finishing it, my mind felt blank and my heart still hurts. Definitely worth watching.

Two Broken Souls, One Shared Tomorrow
Twelve Letters was honestly devastating. After finishing it, I just sat in silence, staring at the wall. What I loved most about this drama is how unfiltered and raw it is. It feels realistic in its portrayal of poverty, abuse, and the harsh truth that not everyone’s life is filled with sunshine and rainbows.YHT and TYX are two broken souls who were forced to confront the horrors of the world far too young. In each other, they find solace, and together they work relentlessly toward a better future. Their bond feels deeply earned, shaped by shared pain rather than idealised romance. I also liked how romance was subtle, leaving the spotlight for the events occuring rather than taking away from it.
The fantasy elements were intriguing yet never fully explained, but I do not think a thorough explanation would have added much to the story. I actually appreciated that ambiguity, as it kept the focus where it mattered. I also preferred the narrative’s emphasis on the 1991 leads rather than the 2026 ones, since they did not feel particularly crucial to the overall story.
That said, I would have loved a slightly more conclusive ending. It was not entirely clear what happened to the side characters, which was disappointing because they were genuinely compelling and added a lot of emotional depth.
Overall, Twelve Letters is a beautiful and haunting story that tugs relentlessly at your heartstrings. It is heavy and emotionally demanding, so consider this a warning, but it is also deeply moving.

Painfully beautiful
"Twelve Letters" is the drama that shows the heartbreaking beauty in storytelling, and about once every year, the Chinese outdo themselves in storytelling ability and visuals. The absolute grittiness that Zhou Yi Ran and Wang Ying Lu bring to their characters and circumstances shows a master class in acting, especially with Zhou Yi Ran. He transfers rage without moving a muscle, only using his eyes and stillness to convey the emotional toll and unfairness of his life. Wang Ying Lu does a good job of showing the frustration of circumstances that label her as the crazy one and her father the saint. Honestly, by the time I was watching the 12th episode, I called her paternal sperm donor everything but his character's name, so kudos to the actor's portrayal of a character beyond redemption but believable in every way.The only reason I rated this drama a 9.5 was because of rewatch value. The actors, the stunning photography, and the side characters translated into cinema perfection. The storyline was gritty and emotionally draining, and I can't bring myself to emotionally ride the roller coaster again; at least, not this soon.

Slow-Burn Storytelling with a Deep Emotional Payoff
I really liked this. It’s an emotionally charged story that transcends time and generations, and it captured me from the very beginning. While there were moments when the pacing felt a little slow, it seemed stylistically intentional—this isn’t a superficial or fluffy drama. It’s the kind of story that invites you to sit down and truly feel what the characters are experiencing. The narrative quickly draws you back in with the beauty of its storytelling. It’s layered and mysterious, with a fantastical twist that never diminishes its emotional depth—drawing on themes of connected fate and second chances. It’s the kind of drama that makes your heart race—and then sigh—as you reach the end and reflect on the characters and all they’ve endured. Was this review helpful to you?
Episode 8 broke my heart.
I would have given this a 10 if they didn't rush the last 2 episodes. This was a very emotional fantasy drama to watch. The struggles they both went through growing up.
I loved the visuals of this - I think its like cinematic vibes if that is the right term but you will see what I mean.
All the actors ate their role!!!!
The storyline developed so well and I was intrigued to see what comes next.
Who wrote this???? 😭
Episode 8 broke my heart. I’ve been crying throughout the whole episode.
Fast forward to end, I would have enjoyed this more if they didnt rush the last 2 episodes. I am sure the viewers would have loved to see more in depth about the son and what happened after everything.
If you watch the credits, they showed photos of their years together but still nothing too in depth so that kinda sucked for me.
Overall, it was a great drama.

One of the masterpiece, must watch , break from long cheesy c dramas ,this is perfect
Wow, its one of the best masterpiece of cdramas. usually c dramas long but this one just 12 eps but in the end i wish this was more long. every character, plot, story, twist, time travel fantasy, it was so amazing, it was so different from usual c dramas. Both male lead and female leads hats off them , their acting, chemistry without being clingy or cheese. I really love the main lead Zho yi ran , he is so fine men, love him, his character always top notch. and even their son and daughter in future , the untold chemistry between them was so loud. Wish they will reunite for future projects. All over its just best, never expected this much good, each ep hooked me. Must watch . True love 💕Was this review helpful to you?
This series premise was so engaging
I watched some clips of this series when it was airing and I resolved to watch it when it was done.it was everything I thought it would be and some more.
these are the things I liked in no particular order:
1. The plot premise (unique and engaging)
2. The cinematography
3. The colour grading/ambience
4. The acting of the cast
5. The ending
I believe that the ending is the best possible scenario because personally I believe that not every series has to have an entirely happy ending sometimes it's logically impossible to have them live happily ever after with everyone getting what they want especially when the series was an emotional roller coaster like this one and everytime you think you know something, they reveal another tibit and you're clueless again.
I really hope that if you had your reservations on watching this series please set it aside and watch it without romantic or illogical ideals because this series is real, raw and unlikely to spare your feelings.

Artistic
I find that most C-dramas are tailored to be profitable rather than artistic. Tragedy, beauty, and romance are so excessively used that they become meaningless. I am pleased to say that "Twelve Letters" does not fall into that category. There is tragedy, but there is also boundless resilience and hope. There is beauty, but it is not ungrounded. There is romance, but it is neither insecure nor saccharine. "Twelve Letters" is real, and because it is real, it is deeply moving. It is a slice-of-life, so I'll refrain from overelaborating on the plot. I will say—for those who are sensitive—that there are significant mentions of poverty, abuse, assault, homicide, and suicide. However, the story refrains from being maudlin given its decisively hopeful tone. "Twelve Letters" features moving found-family relationships; the purest of young love stories; and flawed but ultimately good characters whom life dealt bad cards.
While there are plenty of stories with similar concepts, "Twelve Letters" differs in its fantastical element and level of execution. The fantastical element of the story stems from a mailbox which can deliver and receive messages from the past to the present (and vice-versa). Throughout the story, a young couple from 1991 messages their future children (living in 2026) through this mailbox. This messaging—appearing to be somewhat of an authorial afterthought at first—later becomes critical in solving the story's main mystery. Additionally, it introduces questions regarding the cost of trade-offs, sacrifice, and love. This supernatural element meshed well with the slice-of-life premise to create what is one of the only "magical realism" adjacent C-dramas in recent times.
As for the level of execution, few Chinese dramas are on par with "Twelve Letters." The cinematography is breathtaking. Every single shot in the show is beautiful, especially in the 1991 Mei-Wan Zhen (梅湾镇) setting. What I particularly love is how artfully the scenes are shot. Each frame is a masterclass in proportion, and there is a bittersweet green tint applied to the footage. Despite the pursuit of beauty, nothing is overdone. The actors are not wearing jarring amounts of makeup or clothes the characters could not afford, and film is not aesthetic for aestheticism's sake. Here, grittiness is not compromised by misplaced romanticism.
This extends to the actors' portrayal of their characters. Wang Yinglu egolessly blends into every role she plays; Zhou Yiran never sacrifices sincerity for superficiality; and every supporting actor/actress performs with utmost conviction. There is not a single weak link, which is almost unheard of in recent C-dramas.
Finally, "Twelve Letters" musical choices are extremely effective at building both joy and suspense, especially in the first seven episodes. After episode 7, I found the OST to be overused or forced in certain moments (despite its excellence, it was probably unneeded). I was introduced to the band FloruitShow (福禄寿) through this drama, and they are now my absolute favorite (they are also unfortunately barred from performing as a trio now; they now perform as a duo under the name DOUDOU).
To be honest, I initially dropped this drama after the fifth episode and only recently picked it back up. The pacing can be slightly slow at times, but I found the ride to be worth every minute and every tear.
