A Xianxia which is a well-acted, well-directed, chemistry filled and cinematic masterpiece.

Love in the Clouds is a Xianxia that doesn’t drown you in complex politics or endless plot twists, exactly why it works. It’s easy to follow but still layered enough to keep you hooked, and I was, not only because I like both the lead actors and their previous works. Honestly, it’s a great pick for people new to the genre or for seasoned drama watchers who just want something with emotion, chemistry, and gorgeous visuals without the headache.

It’s adapted from a novel (with some changes), and though four episodes were reportedly cut, it's hard to notice. The direction and cinematography are that smooth with vibrant scenes, consistent pacing, and apt transitions.

Plot & Characters

The plot is simple, yes, but it’s intentional. Each character has a purpose and a distinct personality.

The male lead isn’t your typical “cold but secretly soft only for the fl after treating her like dust for a long time” archetype. He’s playful, hides behind humour, and comes off like a carefree flirt — but underneath that persona is someone deeply scarred, betrayed, and burning for justice. What makes him stand out is that his charm never feels fake; it’s more like armour, and it's refreshing to see a ml be so quick on the uptake when he found himself slowly liking the fl, even beyond the obstacles their love faced.

The female lead is just as layered. Once a warrior, now living as an innocent fairy, she’s cunning, brave, and a bit ruthless when she needs to be. But she’s also dealing with the weight of being a “fallen hero” — guilt, self-doubt, the feeling of letting people down. That mix of strength and vulnerability makes her really relatable. She's quick, a little misguided about how to do things but very easy to love, a perfect match to the ml's intensity and playful aura, quite like the tamer of the once untamed. Both actors BODIED their characters, and it was easy to immerse into the drama.

Even their spirit animals are written with personality — loyal, fierce, and a surprisingly emotional part of the story. I didn’t expect to get attached to them, but I totally did. 27 and Buxiu were extremely well written and eye-catching with their animal personalities bleeding through to their human personas, which was adorable.

Villains

The villains here are actually good. Like, believable. No one’s evil just for the sake of it — most of them have reasons that make sense, and their arcs feel complete and satisfying. There’s no shortage of handsome faces either. Certain scenes were replayed by me too many times just to see a few villains again and again, the casting was great.

That said, a few of the side villains could’ve gotten a more justified ending. I definitely felt some stories were left hanging. But the final episode made up for it. It’s one of the best finales I’ve seen in a while — not rushed, not crammed into the last five seconds. We actually get to see the leads together, happy and in harmony, for a good chunk of the episode. It’s wholesome, earned, and a perfect wrap-up to their journey.

Overall

Love in the Clouds isn’t trying to reinvent Xianxia, but it doesn’t have to. It’s fun, visually stunning, emotionally grounded, and filled with chemistry that actually builds instead of appearing out of nowhere. The miscommunication trope (which I usually hate) was finally used right — creating real tension and payoff instead of just frustration.

Overall, I’d give it a solid 9+/10. A drama that’s easy to love, hard to pause, and one that leaves you smiling by the end.

Agreed with comment about unneeded lying

Story started off good. It did have unnecessary lying and miscommunication. I think the characters were cute, but even the side characters had a lot of miscommunication and lying. I agree that it did drag on the story a bit with all that lying. it kind of lost its point somewhere along the end I was watching it very slowly waiting for it to end because it was just dragging on. There were some part in the show that a really nice backstory and I think it could’ve been executed a little bit better. I’ve watched a couple of dramas that have executed the back story and made you feel more with the characters. This was a very light heart one and a good watch, but not something that I would think about back on. I did like the happy ending. I did like the villain of the story I feel like he played a very good villain, and you can tell that he really liked the girl the way that they ended how they defeated him was kind of rushed. It was a oh that’s all you had to do? I feel like the chemistry between the main characters were good, but it could’ve been better. There could’ve been more scenes that built their connection or deepen it. Side characters romance was a nice bonus, but they could’ve made him a little bit more cold and then had a really good backstory so that it shows how much it took for him to be cold so that he can protect her it just kind of feel like a quick switch back to protecting you. You couldn’t really feel that he was always protecting her and didn’t have enough scenes where he was contemplating on being bad.

Oh the male eye candy is awesome! AND a great watch.

For visuals, you can't go wrong with Neo Hou. But then OMG there are several more exceedingly good looking guys to come in each episode, and I'm only at ep 8! FL actually plays her role well here--not her fan--tho' she has portrayed characters well in My Journey to You and Blossoms in Adversity but I think she failed in Serendipity, Perfect Match, and Love You Seven Times.
The set design could be more engaging-consider Moonlit Reunion (and not the overly gothic Moonlight Mystique) but I think the CGI is fun-very Disney!

More, now at ep 24.
Sorry nay-sayers, this story is compelling--perhaps revisit it when you have nothing else to watch. Better than Blood River that is going on at same time. Sure it has it's share of reminiscing flashbacks but they do make sense---I've seen worse use of repeat scenes to fill episodes. The life and death commitments between characters is conveyed as being family ties, and I found that it covered for the depth/breadth each pairing goes for each other.

Having binged to the end:
Male costumes are beautiful and Female's hairdos are gorgeous though lost some originality in the battle costumes.
The angst scenes made me cry- was the acting, the OST, the reason? All as I don't always react this way with most dramas. (The #1 tear jerker for me is Royal Nirvana..--every episode was heart wrenching)
The story played out and tied up all storylines of characters well.
Of course it had tropes but they were applied in watch-worthy ways (like how watching how Santa Clause Is Coming To Town Rankin & Bass animated puppet Christmas classic explains Santa's backstory--you keep saying "oh that's the reason;)
Few are likely to read this review since SO MANY positive review as already in and it was memorable so I won't need to check a review to recall this. But had to wrap this review up. Does it change your life? No, but Enjoy!

The Best Xianxia of 2025

Finished Love in the Clouds and I would absolutely rewatch this many times. I'll miss the feelings that this drama has given me. From the time I anticipated it last year to the time it was finally released. Indeed, time moves so quickly. I want to feel that high again with them. I love the casts with my whole heart! Thank you, LITC crew, Hou Minghao, and Lu Yuxiao <3

It doesn’t always handle its fantasy well, but it never loses sight of its emotional center

Love in the Clouds may not be the most polished xianxia out there, but it’s a drama that wins you over through sincerity rather than spectacle. It’s messy, heartfelt, and emotionally anchored by leads who carry every beat of the story with quiet conviction.

The story begins predictably with realm rivalries and hidden identities. But once Ji Bozai and Mingyi’s relationship takes center stage, the emotional rhythm steadies. Their connection grounds the show even when the lore feels loosely held together.

As the series reaches its final stretch, it favors emotional resolution over spectacle, choosing to settle its characters’ hearts rather than expand its mythology, and that choice ultimately works.

Ji Bozai and Mingyi’s relationship drives the entire series. It’s tender, patient, and sometimes frustrating, but always genuine. Even when the dialogue wobbles, their chemistry gives meaning to the chaos around them.

Supporting characters—especially Tianji and Yan Xiao—bring warmth and balance, while others like Situ Ling and Fuyue linger with shades of tragedy. Not every arc lands cleanly, but every character adds a small emotional note that makes the world feel lived-in.

Production-wise, it’s modest but earnest. You can see the limits of its budget, yet the effort shows—in the colors, in the music, and especially in how the camera stays close to emotion rather than scale.

Love in the Clouds might stumble through its world-building, but it never loses sight of what matters: the sincerity of its characters and the emotions they carry. It’s a show that feels made with heart, and that heart is what stays with you after the last episode.

Final Score: 8 / 10 — emotionally rewarding, imperfectly told, but deeply felt.

Strong start..

It pains me to do this review since i love Neo so much as an actor. I know its not his fault.. more of a directing and screnwriting issue. This show was so good in the beginning then it just fell off and dragged and some parts i ended up fast forwarding cuz it was just so boring.. it began i think around ep 23 or so.. the misunderstandings and the lying and keeping secrets from eachother dragged on all the way to the last few episodes.. im sure there are other viewers who felt as frustrated and tired as me.. but i kept pushing through and finished.. so many characters in this show.. and their misunderstandings were fixed by the main couple and closed in less than one episode but the main couple just kept on with their misunderstandings and kept adding more lies and secrets to their story.. Even as a Neo fan this was a tough watch for me but i endured. Would i recommend? Sure, maybe you will like it. As for me to rewatch probably not 💜

The eyes, Chico, they never lie

This drama encapsulated everything I enjoy in dramas and more. It gave me romantic comedy, cool fighting scenes, and beautiful setting with its beautiful casting. It is definitely not a perfect story because I find myself longing for some moments but it delivered what it had to and I would gladly watch it all over again!

I enjoyed its first arc, maybe my most favorite — Ji Bozai and Ming Yi trying to read each other's body languages, overly flirting to avoid getting caught, and playing couple in front of others. I say give me more!

Chao Yuan being the main villain isn't a shocker but he's someone I try to understand and that's a reflection of how they built his character. He was not likeable but he had a heart (albeit limited) at the beginning before becoming who he is. His story breaks my heart because at one point, we saw that he's aware that he's succumbing to the evil but he also knew that there's no turning back anymore. Instead of hatred, I only feel pity for him.

I enjoyed seeing Ji Bozai and Ming Yi's growth and become each other's helping hand in everything even from the beginning. Aside from that, their fiery chemistry not only with the intimate scenes but also just as they navigate and resolve the issues arising in Hexu. And have you seen their eyes? That's what made this drama the way it is — in Ji Bozai and Ming Yi's eyes, you can see the story.

And I just have to say, cinematography is incredible! I kept rewatching their Heartbond Array and when they were trying to fight the Sky Swallowing Array. When they showed a montage of Ming Yi's walk towards Ji Bozai as Ming Yi walked out of Ji Bozai's spirit well... they just stabbed me in my chest. And one of my favorites, Ming Yi turning around to face Situ Ling; that's all Ming Yi and her beautiful face.

It seems like 40 episodes was perfect because some things felt missing in between although that didn't really trample on the storylines. It is such a shame that the production had to adjust because of some circumstances because we really could've had it all. Nevertheless, it was a great drama and the ending is executed well.

Warning: Post-series depression afterwards

You'll definitely feel empty after you finish this show because you'll miss the main two characters so much!

Perfectly cast. Neo Hou is brilliant at conveying emotion with just his eye contact and microexpressions. Loved the chemistry between the two leads. Hope to see them co-star in something again!

Good For me

first disclaim I'm not a fan of the main female and male characters, I'm just someone who likes visuals which according to my taste is the main reason I watch this drama, previously I've never watched and don't like dramas with themes like this, (I mean the ones with power??) and this is the first drama I watched and finished (waww) even my idol's show plays this genre I didn't watch it. but this is the best drama in my version in 2025 I even watched it over and over until every day I open weibo, rednote, ins, tiktok to monitor this drama !! and this is also the first time I watched their drama woww I like the characters and acting of the players, disclaim again actually I'm very picky in watching dramas whether Chinese or Korean if there's one thing that I don't think is good I will never watch it for example if I don't like the style of dress and hairstyle, one of the players, plot and synopsis, characters and many more I won't watch it! Actually, in this drama there were a few things that disappointed me, namely Ji Bozai's clothes and hairstyle when he was crown prince didn't really suit him, ugh it was a bit annoying but that's okay. BTW, this is the most perfect CP I've ever watched!!!

Perfect love story with great chemistry, played by fantastic actors

Hou Minghao is just divine in this role with all its different emotions. Lu Yuxiao is also great and the chemistry between both is really working. The story is consistent with no major holes, the supporting roles are also interesting and very well played. I liked the characters played by Quan Yilun and Yu Chengen. I'd like to see those actors more in the future. Particularly Yu Chengen who grew so much after Love like the galaxy.

Chemistry is CHEMISTrying!

Instantly, in my top 5 C-dramas this year! That’s not just a reaction—it’s a declaration! LOL

Their chemistry is so magnetic, the kind that makes every glance and every heartfelt confession feel like a spark! You don’t just watch them, you root for them, you ache with them, and you celebrate every breakthrough they had.

When a story is well-crafted, it’s not hard to like. It’s hard not to obsess! Hoping it's a happy ending!
