It doesn’t always handle its fantasy well, but it never loses sight of its emotional center

Love in the Clouds may not be the most polished xianxia out there, but it’s a drama that wins you over through sincerity rather than spectacle. It’s messy, heartfelt, and emotionally anchored by leads who carry every beat of the story with quiet conviction.

The story begins predictably with realm rivalries and hidden identities. But once Ji Bozai and Mingyi’s relationship takes center stage, the emotional rhythm steadies. Their connection grounds the show even when the lore feels loosely held together.

As the series reaches its final stretch, it favors emotional resolution over spectacle, choosing to settle its characters’ hearts rather than expand its mythology, and that choice ultimately works.

Ji Bozai and Mingyi’s relationship drives the entire series. It’s tender, patient, and sometimes frustrating, but always genuine. Even when the dialogue wobbles, their chemistry gives meaning to the chaos around them.

Supporting characters—especially Tianji and Yan Xiao—bring warmth and balance, while others like Situ Ling and Fuyue linger with shades of tragedy. Not every arc lands cleanly, but every character adds a small emotional note that makes the world feel lived-in.

Production-wise, it’s modest but earnest. You can see the limits of its budget, yet the effort shows—in the colors, in the music, and especially in how the camera stays close to emotion rather than scale.

Love in the Clouds might stumble through its world-building, but it never loses sight of what matters: the sincerity of its characters and the emotions they carry. It’s a show that feels made with heart, and that heart is what stays with you after the last episode.

Final Score: 8 / 10 — emotionally rewarding, imperfectly told, but deeply felt.

Strong start..

It pains me to do this review since i love Neo so much as an actor. I know its not his fault.. more of a directing and screnwriting issue. This show was so good in the beginning then it just fell off and dragged and some parts i ended up fast forwarding cuz it was just so boring.. it began i think around ep 23 or so.. the misunderstandings and the lying and keeping secrets from eachother dragged on all the way to the last few episodes.. im sure there are other viewers who felt as frustrated and tired as me.. but i kept pushing through and finished.. so many characters in this show.. and their misunderstandings were fixed by the main couple and closed in less than one episode but the main couple just kept on with their misunderstandings and kept adding more lies and secrets to their story.. Even as a Neo fan this was a tough watch for me but i endured. Would i recommend? Sure, maybe you will like it. As for me to rewatch probably not 💜

A drama of continuous deception and lies

This is the first review I have ever written about any drama and i will be brutally honest...… I didn't like the series at all..
The drama started of good........ and that's it..........

Why I disliked the drama :

1. negligible to no romance ( love felt only from the ML side)
2. lots of misunderstanding ( the fl had plenty of time to tell the truth...... but she didn't say a word...... it took almost 27 episodes for the fl to say the truth....... only the ML was showing efforts)
3. unnecessary love triangle ( the SML was so obsessed that at one point he felt like a creep )
4. FL behaviour ( she was portrayed as childish, witty, strong....... but to me it felt like she was too self centered )

I thought that at least the romance will become good at some point if I push on...but no..... there were only some small moments between the ML and FL but other than that...... it is just plain with repetitive plot for me.

The eyes, Chico, they never lie

This drama encapsulated everything I enjoy in dramas and more. It gave me romantic comedy, cool fighting scenes, and beautiful setting with its beautiful casting. It is definitely not a perfect story because I find myself longing for some moments but it delivered what it had to and I would gladly watch it all over again!

I enjoyed its first arc, maybe my most favorite — Ji Bozai and Ming Yi trying to read each other's body languages, overly flirting to avoid getting caught, and playing couple in front of others. I say give me more!

Chao Yuan being the main villain isn't a shocker but he's someone I try to understand and that's a reflection of how they built his character. He was not likeable but he had a heart (albeit limited) at the beginning before becoming who he is. His story breaks my heart because at one point, we saw that he's aware that he's succumbing to the evil but he also knew that there's no turning back anymore. Instead of hatred, I only feel pity for him.

I enjoyed seeing Ji Bozai and Ming Yi's growth and become each other's helping hand in everything even from the beginning. Aside from that, their fiery chemistry not only with the intimate scenes but also just as they navigate and resolve the issues arising in Hexu. And have you seen their eyes? That's what made this drama the way it is — in Ji Bozai and Ming Yi's eyes, you can see the story.

And I just have to say, cinematography is incredible! I kept rewatching their Heartbond Array and when they were trying to fight the Sky Swallowing Array. When they showed a montage of Ming Yi's walk towards Ji Bozai as Ming Yi walked out of Ji Bozai's spirit well... they just stabbed me in my chest. And one of my favorites, Ming Yi turning around to face Situ Ling; that's all Ming Yi and her beautiful face.

It seems like 40 episodes was perfect because some things felt missing in between although that didn't really trample on the storylines. It is such a shame that the production had to adjust because of some circumstances because we really could've had it all. Nevertheless, it was a great drama and the ending is executed well.

Warning: Post-series depression afterwards

You'll definitely feel empty after you finish this show because you'll miss the main two characters so much!

Perfectly cast. Neo Hou is brilliant at conveying emotion with just his eye contact and microexpressions. Loved the chemistry between the two leads. Hope to see them co-star in something again!

A great fantasy romance

Love in the Clouds is the kind of fun, easy-to-watch chinese fantasy romance that I live for. The plot isn't overly complicated, and the romance is just as important to the story as the conflict.

While they began with deception, the lead couple has a wonderful relationship of mutual respect and admiration. Lu Yuxiao and Hou Minghao have some of the best chemistry I've seen in cdramaland. This couple is so good, that even with their abundant screen time, I still wished for more!

My 1 gripe with the storyline, and it is a rather big one, is the arc of the 2nd male lead. An arc we've seen in many many of cdramas through the years, that I have never cared for. The evolution of the character does not do justice to the 2ml we first met in the early episodes.

It was also evident at times that scenes were cut, and certain plot points were rushed. CGI was about average for a chinese TV budget - I've seen cleaner.
Still, this drama managed to keep a nice pacing and immersive, logical tale.

This is a must-watch (and re-watch) drama.

Sometimes I prioritise my feelings for a drama over my opinion about the quality of the plot

I really have my griefs against this drama and I even lost the track with the plot around ep 27/28 so normally I wouldn't give a high rating like this but honestly I can't rate it below 9 because I really had a great time most of the episodes.

Firstly the OST, costumes, visuals were great, they really put some efforts in it. Secondly, the acting was nice, Lu Yu Xiao did a great job (like always 🩷). Same for Hou Ming Hao I found his acting nice contrary to the critics I've seen, specially when he was supposed to be emotional.
I also felt the cast had a great chemistry overall : the comedy parts landed well, the interactions between the characters were good too.

The thing I like the most about this drama was of course the relationship between Ji Bozai and Ming Yi, but that's also the thing that annoyed me the most. I loved their bond, how they trusted each other, always defending the other : it felt like they're one mind in two separate bodies. I think they did a great job to show their hearts were sync.

However I'm not gonna lie, I felt the misunderstanding between them dragged too long : 26ep to resolve the misunderstanding about Ming Yi's identity was too much. I'm not questioning the reason why they both acted like they did because it felt valid. Nonetheless, it wasn't a great writing choice to prolong this situation because at the end you just get annoyed about the two of them even if you're fine with their justification in the first place.

This situation repeated and the 2nd time it was Ji Bozai who was hiding something. At this point I lost the track with the plot but I understood he wanted to sacrifice himself to save everyone. The reason is not that stupid but at this point of the story not many episodes are left, so they should've just pushed for a cooperation between our couple instead of break them apart.

This tendency to create a drama where it's not needed is common in dramas but hold no interesting purpose for the story so it might as well stop.

Apart from the repeated misunderstanding, Situ Ling's plot was not good. He replaced Mu Qibai who was doing a great job as the main antagonist but like always with those 2ML it's just painful to watch. Instead of using their relationship with the FL to overcome the difficulties, they always choose to entertain their own fantasy to the point of paving their own demise.

For Situ Ling, he has chosen to mix his inferiority complex (about not having spiritual veins) with his feelings for Ming Yi and came to conclusion he had to became strong for Ming Yi to like him. Of course that's not true but that was painful to watch, I even skipped some of his scenes because I was too annoyed. And it's a shame because at the first I didn't hate him, he was fun to watch but once his love became obsessive he was unbearable. Maybe one day we will be free from those crazy 2ML in c-drama land

The other supporting characters were underused, I would've love to see a real story between Tianji and Yan Xiao. It's kinda a shame but not a scandal since the MC's relationship was great.

Anyway, this drama is not perfect (like every drama) but it was great and I recommend it strongly because it's one of the best that came out this year.

Good For me

first disclaim I'm not a fan of the main female and male characters, I'm just someone who likes visuals which according to my taste is the main reason I watch this drama, previously I've never watched and don't like dramas with themes like this, (I mean the ones with power??) and this is the first drama I watched and finished (waww) even my idol's show plays this genre I didn't watch it. but this is the best drama in my version in 2025 I even watched it over and over until every day I open weibo, rednote, ins, tiktok to monitor this drama !! and this is also the first time I watched their drama woww I like the characters and acting of the players, disclaim again actually I'm very picky in watching dramas whether Chinese or Korean if there's one thing that I don't think is good I will never watch it for example if I don't like the style of dress and hairstyle, one of the players, plot and synopsis, characters and many more I won't watch it! Actually, in this drama there were a few things that disappointed me, namely Ji Bozai's clothes and hairstyle when he was crown prince didn't really suit him, ugh it was a bit annoying but that's okay. BTW, this is the most perfect CP I've ever watched!!!

Perfect love story with great chemistry, played by fantastic actors

Hou Minghao is just divine in this role with all its different emotions. Lu Yuxiao is also great and the chemistry between both is really working. The story is consistent with no major holes, the supporting roles are also interesting and very well played. I liked the characters played by Quan Yilun and Yu Chengen. I'd like to see those actors more in the future. Particularly Yu Chengen who grew so much after Love like the galaxy.

Chemistry is CHEMISTrying!

Instantly, in my top 5 C-dramas this year! That’s not just a reaction—it’s a declaration! LOL

Their chemistry is so magnetic, the kind that makes every glance and every heartfelt confession feel like a spark! You don’t just watch them, you root for them, you ache with them, and you celebrate every breakthrough they had.

When a story is well-crafted, it’s not hard to like. It’s hard not to obsess! Hoping it's a happy ending!

Must watch for those who want to fall in love again

Worth the wait! I love this drama since day one, maybe because I don't like too complicated stories. Although the story has its share of ups and downs, it never becomes overly stressful or heavy to watch. Instead, it offers a perfect balance of emotion, humor, and heartfelt moments that keep me watching continuously.

The main characters beautifully portray the depth of their love for each other. Their chemistry feels genuine and powerful, drawing the audience into every glance, every conversation, and every quiet moment they share. You can truly feel their emotions—the joy and pain—which makes their love story all the more captivating. The way their relationship develops throughout the series feels both realistic and inspiring, and although there are many cut scenes, the story isn't affected at all.

Both the male and female leads deliver exceptional performances, especially when they are acting and crying. HMH is really a fine and talented actor in any field. He is really amazing, especially when he is crying, as well as Lu Yu Xiao. Their acting is full of sincerity and emotion, making even simple scenes feel memorable. They bring life to their characters in a way that connects with the audience, making you laugh, cry, and fall in love right along with them. Their chemistry is insane!

Even though the drama is still ongoing, it already promises to be one of the most unforgettable series and couples of the year. They are perfect for each other, and hopefully they will have a new modern drama. The story, cinematography, and soundtrack perfectly complement each scene. The effects are amazing too.

Overall, this drama is a must-watch. It will make you believe in love again and leave you eagerly anticipating what happens next. Truly worth your time!
