Why Legend in the Clouds Deserves All the Hype It’s Getting

This has to be one of the most anticipated C-dramas of 2025 — and honestly, it was so worth the wait.

So, the story follows Ming Xian (also known as Yi), the God of War who’s been undefeated for seven straight years at the Qingyun Conference but ends up losing to Ji Bo Zai, a warrior from Jixing Abyss for the first time — not because she’s weaker, but because she gets poisoned. From there, the plot revolves around her getting close to Ji Bo Zai to uncover the truth behind the schemes and to find a cure for her poisoning. And of course, things get complicated between them along the way.

What I really liked about this drama is not just the visual effects and fight choreography — which were absolutely stunning, by the way — but how they handled the disguise concept. In most dramas, the female lead just cross-dresses and somehow nobody notices, which never makes sense. But here, Ming Xian is under a spell that actually makes her look male to everyone else, and that small detail made it so much more believable and immersive.

Now, I do understand some of the criticism going around about Ming Xian lying to Ji Bo Zai for almost half the series. At first, it made sense — she thought he poisoned her, so of course she wouldn’t trust him right away. But as the story goes on and their relationship starts to soften, it does get frustrating that she still keeps the truth from him. If she’d been honest earlier, she probably could’ve been cured sooner, and her poor pet wouldn’t have had to sacrifice himself for her. I get that she didn’t want Ji Bo Zai to think she was using him or make him break his promise to his master, but I feel like those reasons weren’t deep enough to justify keeping the lie for so long.

As for the acting — Hou Minghao really surprised me here. I’ve seen him in Back From the Brink, and his acting there felt a bit stiff, but in this one, he’s definitely improved. He showed more emotion and range, and it really worked for his character. But for me, the real standout was Lu Yuxiao as Ming Yi. I’ve watched her in My Journey to You, where she was more cunning and mysterious, but in Legend in the Clouds, she shows a completely different side of herself. Her performance was emotional and powerful — especially that torture scene. It was heartbreaking and hard to watch, but you could feel every bit of her pain. Even her fight scenes were on point and super satisfying to watch.

And let’s not forget the soundtrack — Hou Minghao’s OSTs were beautiful! They perfectly captured the romantic and emotional tone of the story.

Overall, it really delivered. It’s visually stunning, emotionally charged, and has a story that keeps you hooked. Despite a few flaws in the writing, the chemistry between the leads and the overall execution made it one of my favorite dramas this year.

A True 10/10

When I tell you this show had me in a chokehold...I’m not exaggerating when I say I couldn’t skip a single scene. Not one. That alone should tell you everything.

It was just… perfect. The storyline, the chemistry, the action, the characters, everything clicked. And what I really loved is that it actually balanced fantasy and romance properly. Neither one overshadowed the other, which almost never happens. Usually one ends up eating the other alive, but here? Perfect blend.

The chemistry between Hou Ming Hao and Lu Yuxiao?? INSANE. Like, I could feel it through my screen. Every look, every interaction, there was tension, there was softness, there was everything you want. You know how they say, I opened the book and they fell out? Yeah this is basically that. Perfect casting.

And the female lead, finally!!! A “strong” character who is actually strong. I’m so tired of dramas throwing around titles like “general” or “warrior” just for the character to stand there and look pretty with nothing to back the shows claims. Not here. She was smart, capable, fierce, and actually acted like it the entire time. No false marketing, no last-minute personality loss.

Also can we talk about the visuals for a second? The sets were great, sure but the COSTUMES?? Absolutely insane. Hou Ming Hao’s slutty little red number? Hang it in the Louvre. Immediately. And Lu Yuxiao’s flowy dresses?? So dreamy, so magical, I genuinely felt like I was floating half the time.

And the HAIR. Oh my god the hair. Whoever was in charge deserves a raise and a vacation. Everyone has never looked better, and the amount of creative, intricate hairstyles?? Literal dream material. No wonder everything went viral on Xiaohongshu.

Even the secondary characters?? I cared about them. Like actually cared. Their storylines didn’t feel like filler, they added to the whole thing, which just made the world feel fuller and more alive. I can safely say this has one of my all time favorite second lead couple.

I’m genuinely sad it’s over. This is 100% going on my “rewatch when life feels empty” list. It just delivered on all fronts.

And I’ll say it again because well.. I can. BEST Hou Ming Hao HAS EVER LOOKED. Top tier. No notes.

One of 2025s best dramas

"We live together...and we die together."
Why is this line so romantic and intimate, like I can't explain how this show is so well written . To be as one when you're married or together, bro, never have I thought marriage or just that special bond could be that amazing. The details in this drama was just perfect, each parallel scene was just so good and the plot twists left me shocked.
Ming Yi/Ming Xian &Ji Bozai/MingXian their love story was extremely beautiful. I cried with them and even for them ? it was such an emotional ride, never have I thought I would be so immersed in this drama. From the very beginning to the end, it was an experience I wish to remember forever. The actors, film crew and everyone who worked on this drama brought this story to life, i wish I could turn back time to watch it for the very time, I'm already missing it.

Worth a watchhh

This is soooo damn good.. Visual treat. I can't imagine this drama ending. Both the leads have done a fantastic job. This drama is EVERYTHING I didn’t know I needed. From the first episode, I was completely hooked — the story, the romance, the fantasy world… it’s all so magical!

JBZ and MY have the most amazing chemistry ever. I literally can’t stop smiling at their scenes together. The way their relationship grows from rivals to… well, you just have to watch it, it’s perfect! 💖

And the visuals!! The costumes, the fight scenes, the scenery — every single shot is gorgeous. I feel like I’m actually inside this magical world. The supporting characters are great too, each adding something exciting to the story.

Honestly, I can’t find a single thing to complain about. Even the slower moments at the start felt necessary to build the story. But wow, once the plot picks up, it’s impossible to stop watching!

My Highest Anticipated CDrama since last year, Did NOT Disappoint!!

After savoring the last few episodes, I finally finished 🥲

About a year ago, I came across a BTS of the infamous kiss scene🔥 between our leads and decided I MUST watch this. So I put it in my plan to watch, and here we are a whole 12 months or so later. I must say, I was captivated from the very first episode.

The start of the drama was, in my opinion, faultless. Our FL disguising herself as a man, battling for honor and winning the tournament for years in a row, only to be best by our mysterious ML. Re-embracing her original identity as a woman and approaching him to steal a treasure only he possesses, she infiltrates his life again and again trying to gain his trust. The whole "pretending to be someone I'm not, trying to seduce him to make him fall in love with me so I can steal his hidden antidote" part lasts quite a few episodes, maybe a tiny bit too long, but it was my favorite part. Our FL's witty humor and fake naivety sets an easy to watch vibe for the drama.

The ML on the other hand, is quite hard to read at first. He seems to be a playboy with carnal fixations, but really pushes away anyone who gets too close. That is, until the FL forces her way in. Their chemistry from the beginning is amazing, and he pretends to fall for her too, which has all of us wondering WHY? hmm

Anyways, their romance starts off like that. And gets better and better!! And truly, they are both just really beautiful the more you look at them.

The side characters are also so lovable🐱🐉 and while our second couple doesn't get a lot of screen time, they are just as adorable and visually stunning. Really, there are so many beautiful cast members in this one🤭

The main villain is beautiful and his story is heartbreaking. I must say, I didn't cry at all in this drama except when a certain scene with our villain later on (sorry, don't want to spoil) pulls at my heartstrings. It's really a villain whose backstory is what caused him to become evil, so you can't really blame him to the core...

If I had to find some faults, I would have two main. One is not plot-based, but the voice over for our FL was terrible. I know it's her own voice dubbed but the lips don't match it at all and most of the time it would distract me from really resonating with her character. For example, she's an excellent actress, but in a scene where she's tortured (SORRY minor spoiler) her labored breathing with her dialogue does not match. So I didn't really feel as empathetic as I would have. The other characters are fine though. The second is minor, and I guess it would be considered one of the few plotholes of the drama-- a certain "obvious to everyone except you" secret takes forever to be revealed.

Oh, and that KISS SCENE I saw a BTS of? Scrapped. THEY DIDN'T INCLUDE IT. 😤

Full time intense Romance

I don't even know what to say. This drama blessed my eyes with ethereal visuals, especially when Ji Bo Zai's hair turned white and his make-up; it was just too beautiful, and of course, I cannot forget our fairy Ming Yi's visuals; her acting was superb. In terms of the genre, the director and writer really fed us the audience very well with the romance genre. It was very intense, which caused me to have butterflies in my stomach and made my heart flutter a lot. However, it was not that impactful to me apart from the romance, but I definitely recommend people to watch this drama, and I know you will like it.

Best of 2025 and of the genre as well

The genre is enemies to lovers and THIS ONE IS WORTH THE HYPE!
Its one of the best. Genuinely enjoyed watching their chemistry. Its was definitely electrifying.
The supporting characters were also super cute and the pacing decent for a 36 ep drama. It could have been a 32 ep drama in my opinion. Less is always more

A beautiful drama

Wow,

So i watched the last 4 episodes somewhere else as Me and other people couldn't wait patiently for netflix.
So I finished last 4 eps last night and WOW.
I even had chills which is rare, but i had chills, cried in a moment or 2.
To me the story was like a flow of water like the show ran smoothly without any boringness to it. I think the story telling was great phenomenal. I was very very happy with the ending. I thought things would go another way or so but it didn't. The romance between ji bozai and ming yi were great. I liked the kiss bite. that had me. Overall great. Would i rewatch it again probably, but i would probably rewatch WDBTD thats just my opinion. but i really liked this drama.

Drawn in by the visuals, stayed for the story

I’ll be honest, I started Love in the Clouds for the most superficial reason possible: the cover. The male and female leads looked stunning, and I thought, why not give it a try? What I didn’t expect was how quickly a simple curiosity watch would turn into a drama I was genuinely invested in.

One of the biggest hooks for me was the male lead. He carries this quiet, mysterious energy that naturally makes you want to understand him, and that intrigue pulled me in almost immediately.

The drama never really felt slow; instead, it gave me nostalgic vibes similar to the Chinese fantasy films I used to watch when I was younger. Even the mystical elements, the hand movements, the powers, felt familiar in a comforting way rather than overwhelming. If anything, the visual style sometimes reminded me of Doctor Strange, which made the world easier to sink into.

The chemistry between the leads is consistently strong. This is one of those couples you naturally support, but the drama doesn’t beg you to root for them, their relationship unfolds so organically that you simply do. Their softer moments were genuinely adorable without becoming overly sugary.

The acting deserves real praise. Not just from the main leads, but across the supporting cast as well. And I have to talk about the cat and the dragon, they absolutely stole my heart. Their dynamic brought warmth, charm, and sometimes even emotional grounding to the story. It’s rare for companion characters to feel this memorable.

On the other hand, the final antagonist was easily the most frustrating character for me. His inability to move past his obsession with the female lead tested my patience more than once. But to be fair, that frustration is proof he played his role well.

Visually, the drama is beautiful. The costumes, styling, and overall production elevate the fantasy atmosphere, and nearly every character looks effortlessly perfect, something that really enhances immersion in a world like this.

The plot balances familiarity with unpredictability. You can often sense the emotional direction the story is taking, yet the journey still manages to surprise you. Importantly, this isn’t a drama that relies solely on romance. At its core is a story about altered destinies, two lives changed at birth, yet somehow still drawn together as if fate refuses to be rewritten.

Now, about the ending: the finale battle. It didn’t lower my opinion of the drama at all; it simply left me curious... I just wish we could have seen who would actually win in a real fight! Still, the emotional resolution is satisfying enough that it feels more intriguing than frustrating.

This is a drama I would absolutely rewatch, not only because I enjoyed it, but because it genuinely has quality. At times, it even felt like the kind of story that could support a second season.

Emotionally, it delivers where it matters. There were romantic scenes that made me want to hide behind a pillow, and heartbreaking moments that nearly brought me to tears, exactly the kind of emotional engagement I hope for in a fantasy romance.

Overall, I’d place Love in the Clouds comfortably above average. It may not reinvent the genre, but it succeeds at what it sets out to do: delivering a beautiful mix of romance, action, destiny, and magic.

Recommended for: anyone who enjoys fantasy dramas with strong chemistry, emotional weight, and an immersive mystical world.

Best Villain Arc Ever

Love in the Clouds is one of the better romantic xianxias I've seen this year.

It has everything I love in a fantasy C-drama — romance, humor, high stakes, scheming, and just enough darkness to keep things interesting.

Ji Bozai and Ming Yi are very cute together and a power couple. The beginning of the drama especially drew me in with its steamy, high-stakes, and funny situations all woven together in a way that kept me engaged and entertained. Unfortunately, the steam level kind of dropped off in the second half of the drama to give more room to other plot points, and I wish it had maintained that same romantic energy throughout. It's not a dealbreaker, but if you're coming for the skinship, just know the first half delivers more of it.

One thing I genuinely did not anticipate was the plot twist at the end about the switch. It caught me off guard, and honestly, it was really satisfying. I liked it a lot — it added a layer to the story that elevated the ending and gave an extra depth to the relationship between the characters.

Now I have to talk about Yu Cheng En as Situ Ling, because he was just amazing. This is one of the better villain arcs I've seen in dramas. I usually skip a lot of scenes from the antagonist's point of view because most of them aren't interesting. Plus most antagonists aren't interesting either. I actually felt for Situ Ling as a character. Throughout the final stretch, I kept hoping for some miracle — that he'd be fine at the end, that things would work out for him somehow. I was hoping he'd get a resolution similar to the Emperor in Shadow Love. He didn't, and that hurt. But the fact that I cared that much says everything about Yu Cheng En's performance. He really needs more main roles in historical dramas because the talent is clearly there.

Overall, Love in the Clouds is an engaging drama with everything I love in a fantasy romance. It's fun, it's emotional, and it has a villain arc that will make you feel things. I absolutely recommend it to the fans of xanxia or anyone who wants a satisfying romance story.
