I don't have permission to quote yet

Wait,  I can't recall ever having to unlock that feature, interesting. It's been some time, so I'm not entirely sure how it works, lol.  Once I scrolled down and began reading your post, it became clear what was going on, so it's not confusing at all. It's great to see you engaging and enjoying this space, so feel free to share your thoughts however you like!

 potatocouch:
I haven't found an enjoyable J-drama in, like, 10 years.

Regarding the dynamics of relationships in Japanese dramas, I find myself agreeing with you. They certainly aren't the most compelling or engaging. They all seem to adhere to a similar pattern, with the female characters often portrayed as overly timid and excessively cute. However, I recognize that this reflects cultural differences and mannerisms compared to what we see in the States. While I can appreciate that, it still makes it challenging to watch without feeling somewhat let down.

On the other hand, when it comes to mystery thrillers or action, I actually find Japanese dramas to be quite interesting. A few of them have even brought me to tears, which is quite a feat since I usually don't get emotional while watching dramas. When I do find one that can evoke such feelings, it quickly rises to the top of my favorites. If I come across a series with RR tags, I'll be sure to inform you.

 potatocouch:
Ugh. I'm so in love with Yi Xiao and Sui Ge

YESSS!! Alright, hear me out. I genuinely adore "Fated Hearts," but a part of me hesitates to rank it as my top C drama of the year. I just can't justify it because the villains in that series, oh my goodness, they drove me absolutely crazy—they were a complete disaster. Their actions were so erratic that I struggled to follow their motivations from one scene to the next. Just when you think they're headed in one direction, they veer off into another, and suddenly the narrative wants you to sympathize with them. But just two scenes earlier, they were the most violent characters imaginable! I can't even express how much I disliked it every time the princess, who was all about herself, appeared on screen. She nearly ruined the entire series for me; if it weren't for the chemistry between the main leads, I might have dropped the show altogether.

 There's something about C drama villains that leaves me puzzled. They're either excessively dramatic or not villainous enough—there's no middle ground. I think of the Empress in "Shadow Love," you know, the one with the whip and cat-like claws. The only difference with her is that she was so exaggerated that I ended up liking her by the end because the actress who played her did an incredible job of making her insane, lol.

 potatocouch:
I see Zhang Gong Zhu Zai Shang is on your list. Have you watched it yet?

This one is on my watchlist for @Nanamine's MDL 2026 Bingo - Friends Edition Challenge. It was recommended by Arclei, so I plan to start watching it early next year. I'm excited about it, as I've noticed it being suggested a few times in this club. Here’s hoping I enjoy it!

 potatocouch:
I can try and message you both links if you're interested.

Any links for Sugar Mommy and Her Kept Man would be greatly appreciated.

Legend of the Female General

So this drama isn't terrible, but I feel it's somewhat overrated based on its high ratings on MDL. The story began well, but it lost its momentum halfway through. By the end, I found it hard to connect with  the female lead. This was my first encounter with Zhou Ye, and I don't think the writing showcased her true acting talents. He Yan is portrayed as a formidable General, yet when she's not on the battlefield, her behavior often comes off as overly childish, which detracted from my overall enjoyment. I don't think this representation aligns with her character's back story. I wish there had been more flashbacks illustrating her rise through the ranks, but those moments were scarce.

Another frustrating aspect was the overuse of the term 'Commander' . I'm not joking when I say she repeated it at least 10 times in the same sentence. She would be speaking to her commander and address him as such multiple times within the same conversation. It honestly made me want to bang my head against my desk. I thought, if I hear that word one more time, oh my God, make it stop. It only added to her childlike demeanor and completely threw me off, if that makes sense, lol.

I think not giving me the ability to quote is MDL trying to make sure I'm not spam? I'm not sure what gave it that idea, but that's what google says lol.

~~~
As far as J-dramas go, I definitely understand the relationship dynamics reflect the culture. It's just hard for me to watch. Back in the day I did find some interesting Japanese RRs like Anego and Kimi wa Petto (I haven't seen the new version, though). I've seen some good mysteries and thrillers as well, but sadly even though they're not romances the female characters still end up being underdeveloped. It's like once I noticed it, I couldn't unsee it. China and South Korea aren't blameless, but they do a lot better—especially recently.
 ~~~

I totally agree with you about C-dramas villains hahaha! The screenwriters have a hard time writing nuanced, consistent ones. I think it's why I wasn't that bothered by the villains in Fated Hearts—I'm used to it at this point.

Omg Sui Ge's sister gave me heart burn!! The self-sabotage and sabotage of her own kingdom was mind-boggling. Over one interaction that became a crush?? The bar is in hell. She needed Elsa from Frozen to come and tell her "You can't marry a guy you just met."

I'm glad the drama gave her character the ending it did instead of essentially saying, "See, ladies! Even if you make dumb decisions, you'll have a Disney ending!"

~~~
Yessss, I'm excited for you to watch Zhang Gong Zhu Zai Shang. I wish I could erase my memory every time I wanted to rewatch it. Such a solid short drama. Certain scenes still give me butterflies even though I've already seen them.
~~~

It's a shame Legend of the Female General fumbled the FL's characterization. An overly childish general makes no sense—even when off the battlefield. Sorry to keep bringing up Fated Hearts, but the way Yi Xiao was written is part of the reason why it's so great. She's fearsome on the battlefield, and still just as formidable off it. Instead of eating like a dainty maiden, she tears into food with little regard to etiquette because she grew up without parents and then in the military. So that attention to detail with how she eats just elevated the drama among other things.

What would you say was the best C-drama of the year? I guess I didn't have much luck with them this year because Fated Hearts was my favorite by a mile lol.

 potatocouch:
MDL trying to make sure I'm not spam?

I meant to ask you yesterday—are you attempting to quote from a mobile device or a desktop? There's a bit of a difference. For a while, I couldn't figure out how to quote, and then I discovered that the quoting feature doesn't function on phones, haha!

 potatocouch:
Back in the day I did find some interesting Japanese RRs

I haven't watched Anego yet, but Kimi wa Petto is definitely one of my guilty pleasures. I have a real fondness for Matsumoto Jun. I attempted to check out the 2017 remake of KWP, but my nostalgia for the original was so strong that I couldn't enjoy it as much as I wanted. I kept telling myself, no, there's only one Momo, and you're not him, Mr. Shison!

 potatocouch:
China and South Korea aren't blameless, but they do a lot better—especially recently.

Those are some fighting words, just kidding! I think South Korea is probably the best of the three countries when it comes to writing female characters with a bit more brains. But, I have my issues with modern C Dramas, the female leads are  often portrayed as helpless damsels in distress., or they totally swing to the opposite end of the spectrum, becoming downright unlikable—like, seriously, borderline abusive and completely ungrateful to the very guy who's  supporting them and tolerating all their drama.

What makes you so special that he’s willing to tolerate that? It feels so entitled! And then they try to write these strong female characters who can stand up for themselves and handle their own issues.  Why on earth would  this guy still around? I would have ditched them ages ago! It drives me absolutely crazy! Can we please just get a strong female character with good morals and a nice personality for once? One who isn't completely insufferable.

 potatocouch:
I think it's why I wasn't that bothered by the villains in Fated Hearts—I'm used to it at this point.

I absolutely refuse to back down. I truly believe that someday, way down the line, they’ll finally manage to give us a coherent storyline for our villains. Let’s face it, many of these drama actors chosen for these roles totally deserve some serious recognition for the effort they pour into the scripts they’re handed.  Even when they give it their all, it’s often not enough to redeem the character thanks to some atrocious writing. But you know what? It’s all good. I see them, I appreciate them, and you bet I’ll always stand up for the villains. While low-key wishing to rip my hair out, lol.

 potatocouch:
"You can't marry a guy you just met."

But what do you mean , she cant? ... We exchanged a glance and suddenly I was ready to stalk him like a pro, demanding he return my affection while completely ignoring his psycho vibes because, you know, love conquers all! I can totally change him, even if he’s busy trying to off my brother.

 She’s lucky to have such a decent brother because if that were my sibling, I’d be like, ‘Nope, girl, you’re good, just get out of here.’ I tried to save you, but clearly, I couldn’t, and now I can’t even be bothered to clean up the disaster you made. Fix it yourself! Oh wait, you can’t because you ran away and cut yourself off from any help that could’ve been offered. You threw away everything for some dude you barely know.

Oh my God, this girl; we didn’t ask for this nonsense. One more thing she’s all, ‘Okay, if I’m so hell-bent on making this guy love me, and he’s not giving me the attention I crave, I’ll just jump to another guy who’s just as nuts and be miserable there too.’ So, you clearly didn’t love the first guy if you can just bounce to the next one! I’m just saying, make it make sense!

 potatocouch:
I'm excited for you to watch Zhang Gong Zhu Zai Shang

I'll make sure to keep you all posted once I begin watching. Perhaps I'll share my notes for each episode here so we can exchange our thoughts together!

 potatocouch:
the way Yi Xiao was written is part of the reason why it's so great

No, I totally agree with you . This year, I've encountered several series that can be classified as female general, yet some of them fail to truly represent the essence of one. It's as if the writers think, 'Alright, we need to get on board with the trend of having females in high ranking roles,' but they fail to develop the characters in a way that aligns with the roles they are assigned. It's unfortunate because some of these series are really great, yet the character we are meant to like and support is the very one that could derail the entire show.

 On the bright side, having so many options means you can always choose to stop watching a series if it doesn't resonate with you. and Yes, I would definitely choose the female lead in Faded Hearts over the female lead in Legend of the Female General.

 potatocouch:
What would you say was the best C-drama of the year?

Here's a list of my favorite sea dramas that I've enjoyed. Not all of them premiered this year, but if you'd like to discuss any Non RR titles in more detail, feel free to send me a private message. Trying to be mindful not to overwhelm the group with non-RR title discussions. But yes,I'm always open to chatting about different kinds of dramas with you .

  • Qingchuan's Veil of Vengeance (RR Tag) If you haven't seen it yet, you should definitely check it out. I rated it as one of my favorite series of the year. The connection between the master and her disciple is one of the best I've come across in a drama for some time.
  •  Coroner's Diary  ( This drama destroyed me. I'm literally gasped for air , it is beautifully brutal, with its depth of emotions and how it focuses on the harsh nature of some humans. When Landy Li cries, you can't help but weep alongside her; her acting is nothing short of spectacular. Bravo!)
  •   Grab Your Love (The chemistry and steamy kisses! The flirtatious banter and the tantalizing 'will they, won't they' dynamic...  chef's kiss!)
  •  Exploration Method of Love (RR Tag) Although it's not a 2025 release, it definitely gives off strong RR vibes with its female lead. She's independent, quick- on her feet, incredibly funny, and has her adorable moments. Plus, she's a geology doctor and rides motorcycles. What's not to adore?She was among my favorite female leads for the RR club this year.
  •  The Journey of Legend (If you're in search of excitement, this series is perfect . However, be warned, it's one of those shows where the villains will drive you absolutely crazy. This isn't a criticism of Johnny Zhang as an actor. Clearly, if he can evoke this level of frustration in me, he's definitely doing something right! LOL
  • Filter (Second couple syndrome <3 Actor: Gao Han Yu also stars in Exploration Method of Love I found myself diving into a bit of a rabbit hole, eager to check out some of his other series. He's incredibly attractive.)
  •  Twin Fates  ( A fiery phoenix with the personality of a loyal guard dog who is prone to jealousy ! Oh , and  he can be summoned with just a sneeze, anytime, anywhere, haha!)

I'm using a computer. It'll actually let me quote, but when I try to post my response, MDL tells me I can't use the feature because my account is "under review". Google says it'll stop in a few days.

~~~
Who doesn't love Matsumoto Jun? The dude is a legend, and his portrayal of Momo was so intense. I ate it up. I've also liked Koyuki, Sumire's actress, since The Last Samurai.
I heard the leads in the Kimi wa Petto remake didn't have chemistry like Koyuki and Jun anyway. Even people who like the remake, but have gone back to watch the original agree. So I'm not in a rush to watch it even though I might give it a try eventually.
~~~

Hahaha I would definitely rank countries with tolerable female characters Korea, China, Japan (in anime), then Japan (live action). Yes, I had to split Japan's anime and live action LOL.

I've heard people say some Chinese FLs can go to the other side of the spectrum where they're mean, insufferable...etc. But idk...I haven't personally witnessed too much of that. And every time I do watch a drama where the FL has that reputation she ends up being fine. Not necessarily nice or kind, but principled, intelligent, assertive...etc. All great qualities, but because she's not nice people hate her. I've kind of observed that if a FL is morally gray, or just like...not that nice, fandoms will automatically brand them a horrible monster when the same traits in MLs make them swoon. So I kind of have trust issues when it comes to how most fandoms view FLs. I usually have to watch the drama myself and decide, and most of the time I don't agree with everyone else lol.

Of course I don't like abusive FLs (unless she's a Dom :p) but I do find morally gray characters interesting, so I'm hoping we allow more female characters to be. Morally gray doesn't always equal abusive even though that's what people end up branding them as.

Maybe because I mostly watch modern RR C-dramas I end up avoiding the helpless damsels, but don't run into too many mean-spirited witches lol. Some of my favorite FLs of all time are from modern C-dramas. They're assertive, yes, they do end up being nice, and they're vulnerable too. Some of my all-time faves are Luo Na from Falling Into You, Shen Ruo Xin from The Rational Life, Liang You An from Nothing But You, Zhao Jiang Yue from Why Women Love, and Shen Xi Fan from The Best Thing (softer and more emotional than the rest, but well-balanced). Chen Tzu Tung from a Taiwanese drama also coincidentally called Falling Into You definitely has an attitude problem, but is still a good person and I love her.

~~~
Let's cross our fingers. I think somewhere down the line we'll get coherent C-drama villains too. I heard the villains tend to be better in non-romance historical dramas like Coroner's Diary, actually. Is that true from what you saw?
~~~

[Nope, girl, you’re good, just get out of here.’ I tried to save you]

You like my makeshift quote? LOL.

BUT YES, that would've been my response too because why're you in love with someone who tried to kill me in front of you??? Did that turn you on? She was so incredibly stupid, and was lucky to have Sui Ge as a sibling instead of us. I saw a lot of people being sad about her ending because they started shipping her with the second guy, but I was like, hey, this is perfect. These are the consequences of your actions.

To your point, she definitely didn't love Jing Shi since she moved on so quickly. That's how we know it was just infatuation. But sadly, I've seen so many girls like this throughout my life, and some have even been my friends. After warning them the first couple times and getting chewed out about it or called "jealous", I started keeping my mouth shut. Some people have to learn the hard way like the Princess. Do what you gotta do. I'll love you from afar, and if you need my help I'll do what I can.

[I'll make sure to keep you all posted once I begin watching. Perhaps I'll share my notes for each episode here so we can exchange our thoughts together!]

I would love that! But depending on where you watch, it could just be compiled into an hour long episode. That's how the website I watched it on had it set up.

Ooh, interesting! I added Qingchuan's Veil of Vengeance, Grab Your Love, and Exploration Method of Love to my watchlist. The summaries stood out the most.

 potatocouch:
his portrayal of Momo was so intense. I ate it up.

If you were totally crushing on Matsumoto Jun as Momo and haven’t yet indulged in "Learning to Love", you need to get on that drama ASAP! The character Taiga, played by Murakami Raul Maito, was serving up some serious Momo vibes!  These two have  me shrieking into my pillow like a banshee when they get all emotional or flirtatious! They’re both drop-dead gorgeous with that cheeky charm. I’d throw down for them if anyone dared to say a bad word! What is it about swoon-worthy guys who have a good backstory and would trek to the ends of the Earth for their Noona? I’m eat it up  every single time! I’d sell all my belongings just to support their lifestyles.

 potatocouch:
Yes, I had to split Japan's anime and live action LOL.

It's a no-brainer; they're not even in the same league. Anime wife's just hit differently. LMAO

 potatocouch:
if a FL is morally gray, or just like...not that nice, fandoms will automatically brand them a horrible monster

I don't mind morally ambiguous characters, sure they might not be my cup of tea 100% of the time, but at least they spark some juicy conversations. Who doesn't love a good debate? But if you're gonna be morally gray, at least have the decency to stick to your guns! Walk the walk,  If one minute you're preaching one thing and the next you're doing a complete 180, gaslighting the male lead, then I can't support that. You made your bed, now lie in it! Own your choices! If things go south, just accept it like a champ. Don't backtrack!  If it were a male lead pulling that nonsense It would still be annoying to me. It screams fake, and nobody likes a phony. Stand by your words and actions, or just don't bother!

 potatocouch:
unless she's a Dom :p

Yessss!This is always the exception, as long  as she respects the ML.

 potatocouch:
I mostly watch modern RR C-dramas

Ok "Nothing But You" looks super adorable definitely adding it to my PTW. "Why Women Love" is already on my radar! I totally remember that cover art,  thanks for the reminder.I will get to it at the start of 2026. I ended up tossing all those films from the A-to-Z challenge. Honestly, I don't have the patience to sit through 14 movies before the year wraps up. Which means I only need to finish one title for the letter V and another that starta with a number. I feel a bit like a cheat, but  I noticed other folks in the challenge only picked  movies for the year! So, that made me feel a smidge better, lol.

I truly adore "The Best Thing". I was stuck in a major  C drama slump after watching "Hidden Love"; I just couldn't move on from that one. Then this new drama appeared, and I discovered another ultimate green flag in our male lead. Oh my God, he's so perfect! But our female lead in this series, despite her low self-esteem, has a personality I love. I couldn't find anything about her that I didn't like. Sure, she spends a lot of time feeling sad when she's alone, but that's completely understandable. When she sets aside all the negativity in her life, she reveals a charming personality. She's funny and flirts in her own unique way. She's incredibly cute, a hard worker, and has a laid-back attitude, which is what I admire about her.  We need more female characters like her.

 potatocouch:
Coroner's Diary,

It depends, each couple of  episodes introduces a new villain, as they revolve around murder mysteries. However, when our team returns to the capital, many of the cases begin to connect, revealing the true main villain, while still having side villains present. My main issue with this drama was that it seemed to build up to what could have been a fantastic conclusion for a character meant to be the primary antagonist. Yet, in the final episodes, the pacing quickened, and the portrayal of this main villain became increasingly exaggerated, making it difficult for me to engage. I found myself questioning whether the actor was simply following the script or interpreting the character in a way he believed was appropriate. Because his character became more comedic than threatening.

On the positive side, the side villains introduced  were interesting; they not only revealed their personalities but also their methods of committing crimes, which made each one distinct. Each villain had their own motivations, some of which were utterly reprehensible, while others left you contemplating whether you could empathize with their actions. Ultimately, it varies based on the viewer's perspective. I would still recommend the drama, I gave it a rating of  9.5.

 potatocouch:
You like my makeshift quote? LOL.

I'm so proud of you! LOL

I'm going to send you a private message because I have a lot to discuss about "Faded Hearts"; this conversation could last indefinitely. Since it's not related to RR, I don't want to clutter the chat. Miss Princess  doesn't deserve any guy; they were both equally insane BTW! Yet, are we just going to act like he didn't hurt her with flower thorns and do a ton of other things to her. Once again, I get fired up just thinking about it. lmao

 potatocouch:
it could just be compiled into an hour long episode.

That's even better for me, I'll simply share a final conclusion, and then you all can express your opinions.

Ahhhh!! Learning to Love is already on my "Plan to Watch" list. I've heard really good things, and you cosigning them just makes me more excited!

[What is it about swoon-worthy guys who have a good backstory and would trek to the ends of the Earth for their Noona? I’m eat it up  every single time!]

SAMEEE. All I do is eat that stuff up! Noona/jiejie romances just hit different. It's because the MLs are often earnest, and in a world where people play games, that sincerity is precious.

~~~
[It's a no-brainer; they're not even in the same league. Anime wife's just hit differently. LMAO]
Amen. I've been married to Yukino Miyazawa and Mao Mao for a while now.
There are some seriously interesting FLs in anime. I wonder why that rarely translates to live action?
~~~

[But if you're gonna be morally gray, at least have the decency to stick to your guns! Walk the walk,  If one minute you're preaching one thing and the next you're doing a complete 180, gaslighting the male lead, then I can't support that. You made your bed, now lie in it!]

Oop—this sounds VERY specific LOL. What Chinese FL pissed you off, Queen?

I've honestly never seen one like this, so I'm curious. But yeah, I don't support hypocrisy or gaslighting. I just don't mind if kindness isn't their biggest strength like other people seem to.

~~~
[Yessss!This is always the exception, as long  as she respects the ML.]
Respect and consent are key!
~~~

If you liked The Best Thing, I think you'll like Nothing But You. The FL is intelligent, practical, nice, and a good aunt to her best friend's little girl. And the ML is a total green flag despite all the stuff he deals with. Just envision him as a green flag that's a little tattered waving in the wind. I wouldn't call their relationship hot and heavy, but a wonderful slow burn simmering with mutual respect, admiration, and support.

70% of Why Women Love is great, but it loses a lot of steam toward the end, unfortunately. Just wanna prepare you.

I don't blame you for tossing out the films for the A-to-Z challenge. I know you mentioned liking to watch a lot of stuff, but when it starts feeling like a chore it's time to pivot.

The Best Thing took me forever to watch, but I enjoyed it. It was one of those dramas where I was super invested when watching it, but when I wasn't watching it I wasn't thinking about it. I can't really describe the feeling, but yeah, it was good. The ML has to be on the Mount Everest of green flags. He was so kind, patient, and gentle. I adored him. It took me a second to warm up to the FL because of her low self-esteem, and I wanted her to put her ex in his place for the CONSTANT disrespect. But she found her voice, and really ended up growing on me. Now she's one of my favorite FLs. The actress who plays her is actually going to be the FL in Sweetest Rebellion (the gender bent Cinderella C-drama that I was telling you about). I'm curious to see if she can pull off a female CEO role since she's so cute. I just want to pinch her cheeks every time I see her, so I wonder if I'll be able to take her seriously.

~~~
[Yet, in the final episodes, the pacing quickened, and the portrayal of this main villain became increasingly exaggerated, making it difficult for me to engage.]
Okay, so they basically did the thing you don't like. Bummer. I'm glad the rest of the drama was worth it though.
~~~

Sure, let's move our Fated Hearts discussion to private message. I, too, can talk about it for hours. The people who were rooting for the Princess and her second option were clearly yandere lovers, so of course they didn't care about the things he did to her. In fact, they liked it. That's why they hated the end and that's why I loved it LOL.

~~~
[That's even better for me, I'll simply share a final conclusion, and then you all can express your opinions.]
I'm just gonna go ahead and send you the link, so you have it when you're ready to watch.
hi, any recos for toxic FL with happy ending? toxic falls on the below:
  • overly jealous or possessive protagonist
  • manipulative or abusive protagonist (to her partner)
thanks!
PS - Sorry for crashing the convo. I got here kinda randomly, thanks to Jazme, haha
Hi and welcome to MDL. 😊
I'm not really here to stay, lol. I know Simi from the BL thread which is where I hang out haha. I'm a unserious drama watcher and it's unusual for me to write more than a few sentences or so about a drama. Well, maybe a couple of short paragraphs. Nothing too deep. I'm the opposite of analytical. 🤣
Others that qualify, but I'm unsure of the ending because I dropped them: Her Phoenix Majesty (possessive and abusive), Bound by Sin (obsessive and possessive (and kinda abusive too)).
I feel like there are probably more, but I can't remember atm... If I think of any more, I'll add 'em ^^
Also, hi, don't think I've seen you around here before. Welcome to the club! Be sure to take a look around if you haven't already, and grab some fun badges from the index! Hope you enjoy your stay with us!
