Message to people calling viewers who dislike the drama "haters": this is an open platform meant to discuss opinions…
I'm glad you brought this up! I've also raised this issue a few times recently.

I also think it is unacceptable how some members here approach negative criticism of actors and dramas. Positive criticism should not be the only permissible view. Providing everyone airs their views respectfully, this is a non issue. What I have seen more and more lately is members ganging up on one member or on one point of view and painting them as "haters" or even using strong words like "misogynist" just because someone dislikes the performance of a certain actress, for example, and I would be the first person to protest at genuine misogynism. This is a gross misuse of the word and reduces its meaning.

What I find highly disturbing and hypocritical is when someone offers their subjective criticism of a drama or performer and a member here calls them names and attacks them personally for being a "hater". This is not ok. We are all drama fans here. More acceptance, less division! We should all be open to debate on this platform and we should also be mature enough to not only hear someone out but be open to challenge our own views.

If there is a genuinely concerning comment, either because it is genuinely discriminatory or because it is personally attacking another member creating an unpleasant atmosphere, there is a report button.

I was hesitant. I was worried they would be auto-translated, but they are manually done by a human.
I saw one YouTube C drama that was subbed SO badly it was almost surreal. Can't recall which one it was now. It was worth watching just for the bizarre subtitles!

Wow, what a masterpiece! For anyone interested in historical Chinese society, in particular the role of women and women's rights, and anyone interested in history of art and crafts, this is a must see drama. The focus on authenticity and all the exquisite scenes of the weaving process in Ke Si, a Chinese form of silk weaving, is exceptionally unusual. A story of female liberation. A story about mastering an art, about fighting when all the odds are stacked against you, about transformation of your inner and outer world and survival as a woman in Qing Dynasty China.

Anyone declining to watch this drama because of an unsubstantiated online rumour about a dead cat are missing out on a beautiful moving piece. This drama is not for those wanting fluff and Disney happy endings with Prince Charmings. But I loved every minute of this drama.... Any flaws it may have pale in comparison to all its beauty and strengths.

Title Zhao Ge
My guess it didn't pass censorship, and now scandal with Zhang zhe han make it even more unlikely for it to air…
Shame... Hasn't Zhang Zhe Han been cleared of the allegations against him? I thought I read something...

It is appropriate for its time. The marriage among family was very common back then, especially in the royalty.…
Diana was from nobility, the daughter of a Viscount. But her family and the royal family had been close for hundreds of years. Diana and Charles were distant relatives as they were both connected to some of the same royal ancestors, Henry VII and Charles II, but a few hundred years back.

If it wasn’t for the chemistry between the two leads, this would have been a terrible drama. Only because I’m…
Yeah this is a drama for people interested in court schemes, royal families and historical society...
Romance is one aspect of it, but it doesn't dominate the plot because the ML spends a lot of time away fighting battles. That being said, I love the romance between the leads, it's so moving.

For me this is my all-time favourite historical drama. I've lost count how many times I've rewatched it.

Very few dramas have this same "level" of costumes. I'd say The Rise of the Phoenixes too, but a different style...
It's not romance focused btw, but there is some. It is a female centred plot and about the weaving trade, a certain type of silk weaving called Ke Si.
Very interesting if you like more authentic historical dramas. I avoided it because of the lower rating and was shocked to find it's a Yanxi Palace level drama.

Speaking of which, if you haven't already, try The Story of Yanxi Palace. (Not the crappy sequel/spin off "Princess Adventures", that was a complete waste of time imo).

Hahaha Knight in Shining Armour complex. Tbf most C drama ML "heroes" are like this, also check Story of Minglan,…
I like more details and a more complex world and characters for my story. I like that longer dramas have more time for every day moments and quiet moments. Makes it more real for me.

1) A'Wu is the niece of the Emperor (his sister, the Grand Princess is A'Wu's mother). She is ALSO the niece of the Empress (her father's sister). She calls her aunt, the Empress, "Gugu" 姑姑 (paternal aunt) and her uncle, the Emperor, "jiujiu" 舅舅 (maternal uncle).

2) There are 2 princess ranks in the Chinese system. It is not like the Western system. "Gongzhu" (Imperial Princess) and "Jun/Zhunzhu" (non-imperial princess).
If you don't speak Chinese, either trust me or rewatch the first episode. She is awarded the lower level in episode 1.

3) Historical China had a strict patriarchal system so women were not allowed to inherit, even if she was the daughter of the Emperor (which she isn't).

Have you seen Marvellous Women? I am watching it right now, it's a masterpiece! The rating does in no way reflect the true quality. Beautiful drama. Set in the Qing Dynasty.

Are you a Chinese native speaker? I know some Chinese but I'm not fluent. If you are, how does "The Rebel Princess" relate to the native title "上阳赋"?

To clarify... I'm not saying she had the title from birth.... She was awarded the title Shangyang Junzhu (or Zhunzhu, not sure what the characters/pinyin is) at her coming of age ceremony in episode 1, as opposed to a Gongzhu (a royal/imperial princess). Her awarded title seems to be a princess not born of the Emperor. This title and I mean *the word*, doesn't translate. From what I've seen of Chinese historical dramas, this title is sometimes given to the daughters of royals. To use an example from a popular drama, The Long Ballad, Li Changge is a Junzhu/Zhunzhu, because she is the daughter of the Crown Prince. It is usually subbed as Princess because of the lack of an English word equivalent.

All C dramas do this unfortunately, they will only cast a "younger version" if it's a young child. But let's face…
I know right? I love this drama so much, I've lost count how many times I've rewatched it! ❤ My all time favourite historical drama.

no. they didn't. but ppl, who spread this malicious rumor and believed and attacked the production team, killed…
Because some people like to create drama... Or do so for a specific motive (and may even be paid to do so).
People are more likely to believe a scandalous rumour than a boring truth, especially if it goes viral. Words have tremendous power... However, big companies with lots of money can also manufacture their own truth to combat a true scandal. So, who knows?

If China had better rules against animal abuse, the law and its consequences would act both as a preventative measure and a way to investigate the truth.

But I also think it's uncool to boycott a whole drama because of a rumour that may or may not be true...

I can think of several Chinese actors with feminine beauty if they were styled appropriately...
