Hidden within a cave on the grounds of the Lin estate, a couple was concealed: Xiu Wan (Lin Jin Qi’s sister) and Du Zheng (brother of Miss Du Cui Que). Du Zheng was making advances on Xiu Wan, who found herself unable to break free from him. However, her observant sister, Xiu Rui, was watching from an opening high above the cave; the scene alarmed and worried her, as she found both Du Zheng and Du Cui Que highly suspicious. She rushed away, and to put a stop to the young man's advances on her sister, she instructed her maid to mimic the sound of barking dogs. Hearing this, the couple quickly composed themselves and fled. Du Zheng later met his sister, Du Cui Que, on the lake bridge, all while Xiu Rui watched them closely and with suspicion. Suddenly, she ran into her sister Xiu Wan; the two exchanged excuses and deflected questions about what they had been doing there, effectively acting as if nothing had happened. Xiu Wan even defended Du Zheng regarding another matter Xiu Rui raised concerning the illness spreading through the household. This episode also features moments between Lin Jin Qi and Jia Lam: she oversaw his bath time, and he looked happy and at ease in her company. He also asked her to stay and listen to the alarming account his sister Xiu Rui was about to share. As Xiu Rui put it: "I saw something I shouldn't have." But before she could recount it, disaster struck the household. Due to the spreading illness, the estate was blockaded by a garrison of soldiers from another powerful family. A servant climbed onto the roof to investigate and was shot dead by an arrow. The estate was sealed off by the soldiers. Fortunately, however, Lin Jin Qi had already left the mansion before this happened to visit the Marquis—that commander... ...who became his friend. They discuss the assassination attempt the Marquis survived and mention that Lin Jin Qi will soon be the next target. I didn't quite understand Miss Du Cui Que's intentions within the manor. She becomes upset upon learning that Lin Jin Qi is safe outside, free to intervene more effectively to resolve the crisis engulfing the entire family. (She is revealing herself to be a calculating, venomous snake). One of Lin Jin Qi's brothers, along with Housekeeper Han and Jia Lan, has been tasked with handling the situation inside the manor until Lin Jin Qi returns. Gate after gate is being locked shut with heavy chains. How will this be resolved? (We shall see in Episode 17).

When Jia Lan finished her theatrical performance—having enacted that moving story for the soldiers—everyone applauded, including the Marquis (who was also the commander) and Lin Jin Qi. The Marquis spoke to Lin Jin Qi and hinted that he wished to marry this exceptional maidservant. He asked, "Can you give her to me?" Lin Jin Qi gave him a look—one that signaled refusal, though subtly masked—and then offered a flimsy excuse to avoid handing Jia Lan over to the gallant soldier. The soldier glimpsed the real reason behind Lin Jin Qi's refusal in his eyes. He smiled inwardly, as if to say, "You can't fool me, Lin Jin Qi." The commander had told Lin Jin Qi that he had lost his wife and now had an 11-year-old daughter who needed a mother. Lin Jin Qi promptly offered a solution: her sister Xiu Wan was available. As Lin Jin Qi and Jia Lan walked away from the commander to head home, a beautiful, poetic scene unfolded. His possessive gaze upon her—however veiled—hinted at a magical connection beginning to form between them. Walking at sunset, one following the other, the camera captured the pair silhouetted against the sun; Lin Jin Qi’s large strides across the earth moved in rhythm with Jia Lan’s steps. Upon returning home, Lin Jin Qi proposed this solution regarding Xiu Wan—whom she believed would be inconsolable without her romantic match. When he informed his mother and aunt that the 32-year-old commander wished to marry the young woman, they were delighted; however, in that era, a 32-year-old man was considered old, and they immediately implied that Xiu Wan would not be pleased—even though the two older women, Lin Jin Qi’s mother and aunt, undoubtedly saw him as a worthy match. Xiu Wan, along with her sisters and Miss Du Cui Que, had overheard everything from behind the door. Devastated, Xiu Wan wanted to storm in and pick a fight, but Cui Que led her away—likely to find a solution. Xiu Wan soon declared, "I don't want to marry an old man." Xiu Lai, the observant sister, watched from the sidelines; it remains unclear whether her expression stemmed from her own love for the Marquis or from distress over her sister's unhappiness. Her thoughts often seemed enigmatic. Yu Chan fell seriously ill, developing a skin rash, and Jia Lan quickly sought help from Lin Jin Qi, who agreed to provide the family physician—who was currently attending to his sister... ...the younger one, who was also suffering from some minor itching. In this episode, it seems their health issues have been resolved—we’ll see if that holds true in the next one. However, the observant sister’s gaze—directed at Miss Du Cui, then at the lake, and finally at her own sister—was enigmatic. I can’t tell if she suspects something regarding the lake or if it’s just her usual suspicion of Du Cui (which is well-founded). So, that’s the end of this episode (and we’ll see what Episode 16 has in store).

The girl weeping over her lost suitor appears inconsolable; however, upon meeting a young man by the lake and speaking with his sister, she discovers that her true suitor—the one she had chosen—was not lost after all. For her, losing meant gaining, whereas gaining would have meant losing. We shall see in future episodes if that truly holds true. Our elegant general, a man of great ideals and courage, has been ensnared by fate and dragged into a dungeon, despite having committed no crime. His sister/cousin stands firm in his defense, refusing to let them take him away. Lin Jin Qi asks the commander for permission to speak to her and tells her, "I will get out of here. And remember: I always keep my promises." While she is in the dungeon, a friend arrives and leaves her some supplies. The fake cotton merchant had killed himself and implicated Lin Jin Qi in the process—but this is nothing the drama's smartest girl can't help resolve. Lin Jin Qi had anticipated this and left a letter for her to deliver to the Marquis (a young commander who is very hard to convince). Yuchan and Jia Lam positioned themselves by the roadside and sang a deeply meaningful folk song that made the commander and his soldiers stop to listen. Yuchan stepped forward to deliver the letter; the general was about to turn away, but Jia Lam’s voice—incisive, authoritative, and clearly audible—rang out and convinced him. After reading the letter, the general spoke with Lin Jin Qi; upon hearing her arguments, he inspected the warehouse, found the spoiled straw, and discovered the true source of the problem, thereby exonerating Lin Jin Qi. At home, the young general acts like a mere boy when greeted warmly and affectionately by his mother. However, instead of returning to speak with his grandfather and father, Lin Jin Qi—upon learning that Jia Lam and Yuchan have not yet returned—declares in a strong, energetic, commanding voice that he will go fetch them from the barracks. His friend, a subordinate soldier, is also worried about Yuchan, as night has already fallen. The episode ends with Lin Jin Qi gazing in admiration at Jia Lam as she performs for the soldiers; relying solely on her expressive female voice and a captivating narrative, she tells a heroic tale that moves the soldiers to tears. The Marquis commander even remarks, "I missed part of the story because I had to go speak with you, Lin Jin Qi." Yet, Lin Jin Qi once again casts a profound look toward Jia Lam, and the episode concludes with the knowledge that there will be more moments for him to admire her.

Jia Lan finds herself in mortal danger while investigating the case of the spoiled wool in the soldiers' coats. Clever and cunning, she poisons the water of the fierce guard dogs and enters the seamstress's house, spinning a tale about a deceased husband and a shipment of cotton for sale at a bargain price. However, as she exits, followed by the man under investigation, he spots the unconscious dogs and realizes something is amiss. He holds his sword to Jia Lan's throat; he knows she is connected to Commander Lin's soldiers. Jia Lan stabs the villain in the leg with a hidden needle. Lin Jin Qi and Jia Lan rush toward each other; their hands touch and clasp.he flung her behind him. Terrified and with blood on her neck, she hides behind a flower pot. A fierce battle ensues—swords clashing, punches thrown, and martial arts maneuvers—and though Lin Jin Qi subdues his adversary, he fails to get the answers he seeks; the villain, even given the chance to live, chooses death by his own sword. While examining the corpse in the morgue, Lin Jin Qi notices calluses on the man's feet and hands, leading him to realize a connection involving the surname "Wakuku" (from Japan) and the location's year-round need for cotton. This will be the next step in the investigation. Earlier in the episode, Jia Lan and Lin Jin Qi had a conversation revealing a shared trait—a determination to do whatever it takes to survive—as they had both endured similar experiences. Later, a subordinate soldier and friend of Lin Jin Qi draws a comparison: "I saw the same look in Jia Lan's eyes that I see in Lin Jin Qi's." When another soldier asks, "What look?" he replies, "The fierce look of someone who gives everything to survive." Suddenly, Lin Jin Qi arrives and overhears the conversation, causing the men to quickly compose themselves. As Jia Lam recovered at home, Lin Jin Qi told her, “I won’t inform your country about your injury” (“that’s what I did during the war; I didn’t want to cause my mother worry, and I know you feel the same way”). The other girl—a maid and friend of Jia Lam—expressed her gratitude to Jia Lam for sparing her from a forced marriage; her family had intended to sell her off, but the money the maids earned from the successful investigation into the Cuíque flower changed that. A tear of joy fell, and they went to sleep, united by their friendship and gratitude. (Now, let’s see what Episode 14 has in store for us.)

This young general was slandered, accused of something he did not do. Confronted by an enraged, accusatory mob, he risked his life to face them. He conducted himself with both composure and conviction. He addressed them: "My soldiers, look at this scar; I earned it in battle fighting alongside you. I saved your lives, and you saved mine. What happened today wounds my soul just as it does yours. The deaths of the two soldiers who perished will not be forgotten; we will investigate and find an explanation. I will not rest until that happens." (These were not his exact words, but they capture the meaning and essence of the episode.) Because of this incident—this slander (likely orchestrated by someone lurking in the shadows)—his female relative was unable to get married. His aunt tearfully recounted the situation, yet upon hearing the alleged cause, she did not blame her nephew; she knew he was innocent. Who had put that tainted straw into the soldiers' coats, causing their deaths? One of the soldiers—likely the captain—pointed a finger at Lin Jin Qi and said, "You, in your expensive coat, still have the audacity to cheat us by using cheap straw in our coats? This is unacceptable." Lin Jin Qi’s response was chilling; he declared that if he failed to solve the case, his fate would be death (though he used much stronger language). They could not find the straw vendor responsible for the fraud, and there seemed to be no other avenue for investigation. But Jia Lan, that clever young woman, proposed an alternative: "What about the seamstress who made the coats? Perhaps she can give us some answers?" And so, that became the path they would take. Frustrated by the failure of her first attempt to make a move on Lin Jin Qi, Miss Du shrewdly questioned the maid—a friend of Jia Lan—and discovered that Jia Lan was behind her failure. (Just how many more traps will the girl's innocence provide for Miss Du to use against our heroine?) Miss Du offered to play chess with Lin Jin Qi, but he politely extricated himself from the situation (she didn't seem quite so clever in this instance). Yet, we know other opportunities for her to act will arise. (So, let’s find out what happens in Episode 13.)P.S.: The moment Jia Lan spent with her parents—revealing that the reward she had received was enough to buy freedom for all three of them—was truly joyful and fun. But even more interesting was her explanation: that money meant nothing to Madam Lin; securing their freedom wouldn't come down to cash, but rather to the Madam's own will. It would happen by carving out their own place. (A very hopeful prospect, isn't it? Let's look forward to seeing that unfold for our characters.)

A young woman—the sister of the soldier who saved Lin Jin Qi’s life—has arrived and will be living at the Lin family estate. She appears very accomplished, particularly in the art of creative paper-cutting. Lin Jin Qi’s mother spoke about her brother: She had aspired to a high-ranking court position but failed to secure it, and consequently, remained unmarried past the age of nineteen. Meanwhile, Lin Jin Qi continues his journey of facing his soldiers and proving his mettle; he shared some interesting information with a soldier who enjoys mocking him. Within the Lin household, we are introduced to Lin Jin Qi’s four sisters—though they haven't formally introduced themselves yet (we know who they are thanks to the trailers). Lin Jin Qi shared a delightful lunch with his mother—eating with such gusto that he looked like a child—accompanied by the soldier who had saved his life; his mother remains deeply grateful and will not forget that act of heroism. Jia Lan and the other maids underwent an assessment of their work skills. The funniest and most lighthearted among them revealed her culinary talents and was assigned to assist Miss Du—the newly arrived sister of Lin Jin Qi’s friend. Jia Lan quickly demonstrated her aptitude with books, though she was careful to mention that her writing wasn't particularly good (hard to believe; perhaps she didn't want to appear *too* skilled, as her old excuse about learning from a monk via sutras would no longer be convincing). Lin Jin Qi also spoke with the head maid—their interaction revealed a warm, friendly bond, akin to a long-standing friendship; she even remarked that he remained the same caring and kind person he had always been. This episode also featured happy moments for Jia Lan and her fellow maids during a cultural and folk festival; the Lin estate seems to be a place of great joy. Finally, Lin Jin Qi entered the room carrying narcissus flowers that someone had asked to be delivered. And at that moment,Lin Jin Qi’s grandfather revealed that Lin Jin Qi is not the uneducated man his father once described (“he became a soldier because he wasn't good at his studies”). In fact, he had been an excellent student under his old teacher—his grandfather. He demonstrated that, despite having wielded a sword in battle, he still knows how to use a brush and write with beautiful calligraphy. Lin Jin Qi even quoted a lovely poem.“You taught me, Grandfather”: “In misfortune lies a blessing, and within a blessing, misfortune lies hidden.” “A loss can turn out to be a blessing.”His grandfather also mentioned, with a worried look, that the Zhao family had risen in the king's favor, becoming even more powerful. Someone seeking to curry favor with them might try to cause trouble for Lin Jin Qi. Yet, Lin Jin Qi appeared unconcerned, saying he knew this was bound to happen.Once again, we see foreshadowing of events likely to unfold in future episodes. (But now, I’m off to watch Episode 11.)

Episode 7: We finally meet (but don't know each other yet)A young woman is punished in the freezing cold and frost. Her friends' care brings her comfort—and warmth. Her reunion with her mother is sweet and heartwarming. The head of the household (Lin Jin Qi) makes her an offer she cannot refuse, given the fear of what might happen to her at the hands of the mistress. A couple lives in the shadows, hiding away; yet this time, Lin Jin Qi sees what is happening. He appears from behind the trees with a keen gaze, watching the strangely disguised figure climb the stairs. Our main couple still doesn't truly know each other. In this episode, they become accomplices in an investigation. (Where will this lead in the story?) I’m looking forward to the next episode, which I’m about to watch now.PS: And what about those red flowers on the tree? Why did Lin Jin Qi give some of the branches to the grandfather? And why did Xianlan stretch up, reaching out to touch a high branch? She also noticed that some branches had been cut recently. (Did she realize it was Lin Jin Qi?) Is Lin Jin Qi’s hidden sensitivity revealed in those small branches?bianbian16141 3 minutes agoHere is my personal interpretation:"A spray of red apricot blossoms leans out over the wall."Cultural metaphor:In classical Chinese poetry, “red apricot leaning over the wall” is a well‑known metaphor for a married woman’s infidelity — in ancient times, people did not say “cheating”; they used this poetic image instead.Contextual twist in this story:However, the setting here is clearly winter. Apricot trees do not bloom in winter — only plum blossoms do. So the author deliberately replaces the “red apricot” with a branch of plum blossoms extending from the wall. This is written from the male lead’s perspective, echoing the old metaphor and hinting at temptation or emotional crossing of boundaries.Female lead’s perspective:From her point of view, plum blossoms carry a completely different symbolism. Because they bloom in the dead of winter, they represent resilience, purity, and an unyielding spirit. Seeing the plum blossoms blooming so beautifully in the snow, the female lead is deeply moved. I can understand the ML. He didn't have any choice, even though he wanted to inform them that he could not go against his family, being so young. Now, his family only lived because his first wife's family protected them and tied them to their family to use him as a pawn. Love the FL who is trying to hold back and lay low; we can see tI can understand the ML. He didn't have any choicehat she understands every plot that is happening in front of her, but she doesn't want to intervene in it.

leadtheprotection 5 hours agoWow only 11 mins into ep 1 and the noble woman fl genuinely asking her parents "what makes someone a slave?" with the curiosity of someone who sincerely wanted to know because she couldn't understand or accept this fact was one of the most profound things I've seen in a cdrama so far...I’ve always wondered about this myself every time I watch a historical drama (being from the 21st century lol), and despite all the reminders i give myself about how historical dramas merely reflect how things were in the past in many societies it would still leave a lingering discomfort seeing young girls being sold off to rich homes and then have to suck up to their "masters"...so to see a show acknowledge this truth from the pov of a privileged character was truly refreshing to see. Ofc, it's also foreshadowing for what happens to the fl in the future so conceptually and story-wise it was a really clever scene that was very well done and impactful.Ofc i've seen nothing at all of this show to give it a proper judgement yet but I feel like both the drama and the fl already deserves all the respect even if she does turn out to be a typical mary sue just for that bit of self awareness at her young age considering her life circumstances and privilege.xerene 14 hours agoThis has one of the best yet heartbreaking intro I've seen in my whole life. I bawled my eyes. Shen women have my respect, dying def have been better than being violated over and over again in that state-run brothel. Shame on the emperor and that eras governing system. The cinematography and ost are so good as well. It was simply so good. The acting is top-notch and ofc I love the leads. I love Jialan's newly found family with her didi and mama.mochachen 15 hours agoI'm only halfway through Ep. 1 and I already love the cinematography. The way it opens with that bird's-eye view panning across the capital is so beautiful. Even the floral arrangements in the Shen Manor are so bougie. 😂I also understand why the Shen ladies would rather take their own lives than become state-run prostitutes. I read somewhere that during the Ming Dynasty, Emperor Zhu Di massacred an entire family spanning 9–10 generations, and one of the noble women who survived was reportedly forced to service 20 men a day as a quota.So, similarly, for the Shen ladies, it's basically a choice between two kinds of despair: being violated every day or dying. If I were in their position, I'd probably choose to end my misery too and keep my dignity. Imagine a family friend coming to visit you in the brothel afterward—how humiliating and shameful that would be.

If I recall correctly, this is the first time the two protagonists—master and maid—have been in such close proximity; they are in the same room, and she looks terrified. The wife is literally risking her neck—not with just one lover, but two; honestly, it seems like she *wants* to get caught. The first wife’s courtyard is a hotbed of envy and underhanded schemes among the maids—some quite innocent, others more calculating. The husband—the protagonist—is hunting for evidence against his wife; it is clear he wants to get rid of her, and he will almost certainly succeed. We’ll see what happens tomorrow. I’m still really enjoying this drama.Susuwatari789 31 minutes agoThis should be tag as a thriller 😭. Every steps, every movement , every single word, Lan Xiang has to be ten steps ahead of her master. I felt her fear and it was captured on screen. That ink stamp scene had a high degree of suspense and her revealing the arm was so compelling. Hope the two of her partners will come out alive.Now waiting and watching how she will navigate through these dangerous situations…every moment seems like a trap🥲. Can’t wait to see her and her family end their servitude and start a better brand new journey. JiaYou!Next preview…his proposal

I watched all four episodes. The time just flew by. The pacing is excellent. I shed a lot of tears during the first few episodes. Now, it feels a bit like a suspense and investigation story. Lan Xian's journey continues, and the main couple hasn't met yet—though they are about to (I assume). 🥰

I just finished watching episode 17. And it was so cool to connect the dots with the previous drama (A Moment But Forever). This drama really shows the connections, it's not like other dramas that seem fake when they say (it's part of the same universe).PS: When they talk about the flying boat, the goddess Wushuang, the war between gods and demons.But I wonder if Meshan sword is a younger Mesha Jun (because they live for hundreds of years), or if it's another character.

In this episode 5: The philosophy of the king on the throne, a friend from Lu Huai's past. That conversation was so full of the meaning of life's temporality. Someone with a young face, but with a soul that lived through the old man's history. And the friend even said to him, the one who walked the road with Lu Huai (we are the same age, but I always raised you like a son).

I enjoyed the heroine's heroic speech for justice in episode 4. It was very touching. The heroine's scenes of courage and justice-seeking action were impactful.

This episode 3 was quite an adventure, very intense, not at all tiring. An episode that feels like a group hero series, full of revenge, mysteries unfolding, magical powers everywhere, but it doesn't seem like useless special effects, as everything was very interesting intertwined with the story being told.
