It All Started with an Orchid Pot

The elegant young woman—the long-awaited young duchess—arrived. Lady Lin and the girl's mother exchanged compliments about their children, who were, according to them, on the verge of marriage. Yet, when Lin Jin Qi appeared, he was elegant and polite, but distant. While walking by the lake with his prospective bride, he quoted a saying about a man who must inform a woman he cannot marry her because he is already wed. It was a veiled verse, but she fully grasped the riddle behind it (and her father—the villainous imperial court minister who had opposed Lin Jin Qi—realized it too). However, the most perilous moment by the lake occurred when Lin Jin Qi’s servant brought out the orchid pot he had so carefully tended; Lin Jin Qi emphatically ordered, "Take that pot away." The young woman understood that the orchid pot signified the presence of another woman in his life. She then took the matter to Jia Lam’s father’s shop, buying the pot from Jia Lam herself for 100 taels—an exorbitant sum. She had expected Jia Lam to refuse the offer, but Jia Lam accepted it (after all, believing her friends had given her the plant, she intended to share the proceeds with them). Manny—the duchess pursuing LJQ—was testing her. She took a dislike to a certain vase, deeming it—simple, plain, and made of cheap materials—unworthy of LJQ, much like she considered Jia Lam unworthy of him. She ruthlessly smashed the 100-tael vase on the ground, a symbolic act implying that the same fate awaited Jia Lam. Subsequently, Jia Lam was kidnapped twice. The first time, her quick wits saved the day; trapped inside a clothing chest before an audience, she thwarted the villains' scheme by rising up in a ghost disguise, thereby alerting the proprietress to the trouble—especially since Scholar Han lay unconscious nearby (the villains had intended to ruin both their reputations). However, Jia Lam’s own kindness led to her being abducted again hours later and sold to a brothel; there, at the episode's end, she encountered a maid who had been taken away after a beating in an earlier episode. Meanwhile, Lin Jin Qi discussed a fugitive deposed ruler with the Marquis—a man notoriously hard to track down—noting the Marquis's mention of the fugitive's missing finger (an unmistakable identifying mark). LJQ interrogated a man who had fled the King's officers as they searched the premises for the fugitive; Jia Lam had previously sketched a partial likeness of this man. They struck a deal: the man would lead LJQ to Jia Lam. At that moment, LJQ’s gaze turned fierce and resolute; he was determined to find the woman he loved in time to save her. (We will see if he succeeds in finding her in the next episode—Episode 23.)

Where there’s a will, the bond remains unbroken

In this episode, Xiu Rui reveals she is no fool; she is determined and knows exactly what she wants. She demonstrates this to her grandfather, showing that she—not Xiu Wan—is the better match for the Marquis (while Xiu Wan briefly seems to regret never having accepted the marriage herself). However, Lin Jin Qi tells a tearful Xiu Wan that, after a year and a half, they will find a better solution for her once her grandfather’s anger has subsided. Weeping, she says, "I will do whatever you decide." Per her grandfather's orders, Xiu Wan is to be confined to a secluded pavilion on the estate. During their time off, Jia Lan and her parents look for a new house to rent but reject the first option because the low price seemed suspicious. Little did they know that Lin Jin Qi had arranged that house for them. When Lin Jin Qi learned of the rejection, he acknowledged that his subordinates' strategy had been flawed; someone as intelligent as Jia Lan would never accept such a suspicious offer, fearing it was a trap. (This moment—featuring the interaction between Lin Jin Qi and his subordinates, the punishment, and his contemplative, humorous monologues—was amusing, capturing the typical behavior of a man in love trying to figure out how to pursue his romantic interest.) Eventually, they settle on a house with a landlord who seems difficult to win over (could this, too, be part of Lin Jin Qi's plan?). The rent is paid through work. They meet a young scholar living in an adjacent house; the property is essentially a small complex containing three or four separate dwellings. Her parents are overjoyed, making plans for the future—dreaming of owning their own home and other aspirations. Meanwhile, Lin Jin Qi and the Marquis stand before the bodies of two soldiers, wondering how the intruders managed to gain such access (concluding that a powerful figure must be pulling the strings). Lin Jin Qi arrives at the house where Jia Lam is staying; upon seeing a flower arrangement, they realize it was created by someone with a refined education, and he immediately deduces that Jia Lam was the one who arranged it. However, Lin Jin Qi finds Jia Lam singing alongside a young scholar who is playing an instrument. He looks displeased. He sits down with them and joins the conversation, yet he keeps a suspicious eye on the young man beside Jia Lam. (But judging by the look on the scholar's face as he leaves, it seemed to me that he understood the situation perfectly and knew where things were heading—at least, that was my impression.) Meanwhile, Jia Lam’s mother is delighted to see the young scholar with her daughter (she likely views him as the best possible match for marriage, never suspecting that Lin Jin Qi—a nobleman from a prominent family—is actually the one interested in Jia Lam). "If the will is there, the bond remains unbroken." Jia Lam said this to Lin Jin Qi when he questioned the distance she kept (referring to her friends who were maids), though we know he was actually questioning the distance she maintained regarding *him*. She points out that they are only a few blocks apart, so they aren't truly distant. "You really are like a weed; you thrive anywhere." Lin Jin Qi is conversing with a flower (though inwardly, he is thinking of Jia Lam, who lives far away). Jiu Gao had investigated the scholar Han at Lin Jin Qi’s behest. After reporting what he discovered about the young man's capabilities, LJQ muttered to himself: "He isn't someone as easily outmaneuvered as I thought." His interaction with his subordinates here was amusing; both were eager to help Lin Jin Qi solve the problem. "Plan well before acting; know when to stop, and you will prevail." Lin Jin Qi wrote this saying—likely in flawless calligraphy—on the sheet of paper before him. He smiled as he looked at what he had written. (He believes that with the right strategy, he will be able to unite with Jia Lam). In due time. The episode concludes with Lin Jin Qi at the palace, receiving a promotion to Commander of the Shence Guard. (He is being rewarded for his heroism and other successfully completed missions). The imperial edict is read aloud by an emissary (or perhaps the king—I wasn't quite sure). Everyone is dressed in those peculiar red robes with loose waist sashes and wearing black hats with two large "ears." Yet, it is a solemn moment. An elderly minister in red robes congratulates Lin Jin Qi, acknowledging his merit. The man who read the edict also mentions that the marquis—who is also dressed as a minister—is set to marry one of "Fengtai’s" (referring to LJQ) sisters; he notes that since the marquis calls him "Uncle," Lin Jin Qi will effectively become part of the family. Lin Jin Qi remarks, "I feel apprehensive." The marquis states that the wedding will take place on the sixth day of the sixth month. However, not everyone offers congratulations to Lin Jin Qi; one individual—a mature man, though not yet in his fifties—casts a disdainful look at him and questions why he remains unmarried (we have seen that a man can also face stigma over a failed marriage; the maids in the drama have repeatedly mentioned their fear that Lin Jin Qi might be cursed). Yet, this minister (who looks suspicious) brings up the matter as a criticism, and Lin Jin Qi replies: "The Heavens make their own plans; perhaps the right moment has not yet arrived." It seems Lin Jin Qi has just made a new enemy. We shall see in Episode 21.

A tragedy foretold. A tragedy averted.

Grandfather Lin proposed Xiu Wan’s death (I didn't quite grasp the details of this in the episode). She hadn't made the mistake; the Du family had, and she had simply fallen into their trap. With a grandfather like that, who needs enemies? He was just as cold now as he had been in the past when he left Jia Lan’s family to face their tragedy alone. Back then, he had saved his entire family, yet here he proposed discarding a family member. Even though she was a niece rather than a granddaughter, it was still incredibly cold-hearted. Xiu Wan’s mother resolved to take her own life, but just as she was about to throw herself onto a thick iron spike, Lin Jin Qi stepped in and stopped his aunt’s rash act. Lin Jin Qi offered a plausible solution: “No one needs to die. We don’t just have one young lady; there is another candidate who can marry the Marquis.” That was when Xiu Rui entered the room, wearing an enigmatic expression that made the sincerity of her feelings seem questionable (did she orchestrate this whole thing? She was the one who had said she lacked the beauty of her sisters—the very asset needed to secure a husband). Meanwhile, the most beautiful one was to be sent to her death. All the maids received gold rewards from Madam Lin. However, Madam Lin asked Jia Lan what extra reward she would like. She replied that she wanted freedom for her entire family; she wished to repay her parents' care by being with them in the coming years. Madam Lin reluctantly agreed, though Lin Jin Qi’s approval would be required since they belonged to his pavilion. The other maids were happy with the gold they received, as well as a copy of the study primer *Three Character Classic*. Yet, they felt it was useless without a teacher present. "But Yuchan has offered to teach you all to read," Jia Lan said. And they rejoiced. Madam Lin actually felt it was for the best that Jia Lan was leaving; after all, once he married, how would his wife get along with a beautiful, intelligent maid constantly around? So, it was better this way. As Jia Lan and her parents were saying their goodbyes, Lin Jin Qi did not allow them to kneel before him, saying, "I am no longer your master, so such formalities are no longer necessary." Jia Lan promised to pray that he would find a wonderful marriage and for the happiness of the entire Lin family. Madam Lin looked on with approval, while Lin Jin Qi’s expression was somewhat enigmatic (as if, in doing this, he actually had another solution in mind). As they left the manor gates, the sound of firecrackers and the general joy of the crowd filled the air; a red wedding carriage was passing by. It was Miss Zhao, on her way to her wedding. Is it Xing Tang? The episode began with the public humiliation of the traitorous commander, who was spat upon and struck by his outraged colleagues. Meanwhile, Lin Jin Qi ordered his soldiers to regain their composure, and a fellow officer offered him a salute. The episode concluded with the arrival of a young woman rejoicing over a marriage that had been rejected by another (though that other woman could not have accepted it even if she had wanted to). By accepting this long-awaited marriage, she was also saving the life of another young woman. (What will happen in Episode 20? Let’s find out.)P.S.: I can't forget this scene. It’s the graveside scene where Lin Jin Qi and the villainess, Miss Du Cui Que, meet. He pays his respects to Du Zheng—the friend who once saved his life but also tried to take it. At the grave, Lin Jin Qi answers a question Du Zheng had asked in an earlier episode. When Du Cui Que arrives, she is a pitiful sight, shackled and locked into a heavy wooden cangue that traps both her head and hands. Yet, for that moment of farewell to her brother Du Zheng, she is granted the dignity of being free from the chains and the cangue. She bids her brother goodbye. Even so, she speaks harsh words to Lin Jin Qi, who stands silently with his face turned away. He tells her that if she wanted a good marriage, she should have sought it with dignity rather than through wicked schemes. She casts one last glance at him as she is led away to prison, the chains clanking as she walks ahead. (These two actors make a great pair; I remember the first three episodes of *In Blossom* featuring the young woman with the scar and the eyepatch. That was the heroine’s first incarnation—before the body swap and before Ju Jing Yi took over the role. Both actresses were excellent, but Zheng He Hui Zi left a strong impression on viewers, and her chemistry with Liu Xue Yi—in their respective roles—was memorable. Seeing them here feels almost like witnessing them in another life, yet once again separated by events beyond their control—at least, that’s one way to view them if you’ve watched *In Blossom*.)

Orchid flowers that are more fragrant at night

This episode features many clashes between key characters. A plotline was resolved, enemies were unmasked, and there were moments of frustration as well as salvation for many characters. Regarding the dialogue of the villainess Du Cui Que—who we know won't disappear in this episode, given that the drama's poster shows her pointing a weapon at the female lead and a group of people—she was unmasked here. Her expensive gauze undergarments and other costly items aroused the suspicions of the other maids; furthermore, it was clearly stated that she was responsible for the death of Lan Dang. She intended to die along with everyone else, but she wasn't allowed to; the antidote was forced into her mouth against her will (though perhaps in future episodes, they might regret letting her live—just a guess on my part). In her speech, Du Cui Que reveals her hatred for a subordinate position (marrying into a powerful family was the goal, whereas marrying into a less significant family would be a disgrace). Using her dowry to help her husband rise in rank? That would be a humiliation. Mrs. Qin countered all these arguments: “We helped you. Even if it wasn't for you to marry Lin Jin Qi, we would have arranged a good marriage for you!” Lin Jin Qi also reflected on this during the episode: “I just wanted to help the two siblings. That’s why I brought them to our manor. I really don’t understand. Was I wrong?” A slightly tipsy Jia Lam replied: “No, you’re just a good person.” The two of them sat there on the garden stones. Jia Lam breathed in the scent of the orchids and explained to Lin Jin Qi that they are fragrant at noon, but far more so at night. (Could this be a metaphor for their story? Does this love need to be built from the heat of the day into the night to become unshakable?) Du Cui Que was exposed. Jia Lam said: “Lin Jin Qi didn’t bathe in that water; we took some of it and gave it to you to drink. You expected Lin Jin Qi to be unconscious by now, but that didn’t happen. He is actively resolving a problem.” (Xiu Wan still tried to defend Du Cui Que, but faced with all these arguments, she realized with frustration that she was walking into a trap.) On the battlefield, Lin Jin Qi saw his supposed friend, Du Zheng, attack him with a sword. After many clashes—sword against sword—showcasing the flexibility and fluidity of both men in a raw, well-choreographed fight, we heard the sounds of steel; one fell, the other rose, and we waited for the moment a blade would tear into flesh. But before that could happen, the Marquis loosed an arrow that dealt a fatal blow to Du Zheng. Later, in prison, Du Zheng lay with an incurable wound, receiving painkillers to ease his agony. Yet, even as he mumbled, he asked Lin Jin Qi—who felt a mix of gratitude and bewilderment— “Did it work? Was the Lin family killed?” (That is when a look of concern crosses Lin Jin Qi’s face, and he quickly leaves.) Upon arriving home with his two aides and friends, he finds all the maids celebrating, realizing that everything is fine at the estate. A conversation then ensues between Lin Jin Qi and Jia Lam as they sit together (he treats her as an equal, though she shows him the deference due to a lord). There is also a moment the camera chose not to show—not a kiss, as we haven't reached that point yet—but rather Lin Jin Qi carrying her in his arms after she fell asleep on the garden stones. (Lin Jin Qi’s footsteps are light; the camera focuses only on his feet, obscuring the rest of his slender frame, then pans to the now-empty garden stones where the two had been sitting—confirming he carried her away.)However, the episode concludes with the commander—the one who shot the servant at the Lin estate and had intended to assassinate the Marquis (another commander)—facing arrest and judgment in the presence of the other soldiers and Lin Jin Qi. "You chose the path of injustice, and now you shall face your punishment." (I hope that in Episode 19, Jia Lam’s reward isn't being sent far away from Lin Jin Qi.) We shall see.

A Life-and-Death Struggle

Soldiers lie in the forest, camouflaged by dry leaves. A vow between brothers—"I’ve got your back." Yet, another man—Lin Jin Qi’s aide—sees something more, something lying beyond the immediate danger, having spoken with Jia Lam. It is Nanke who guards Lin Jin Qi’s back; he shouts a warning about a treacherous threat approaching from behind just as the episode ends.But before that, back at the Lin estate, several key characters are hovering between life and death. Someone who had been in good health suddenly falls ill and dies quickly, suffering from body rashes and moaning in pain. Jia Lam presses the doctor for answers regarding the nature of the illness. He identifies it as erysipelas. However, Jia Lam remains skeptical and seeks the truth—a search that leads to the episode's climax: the death of a maid and the profound (though likely feigned) weeping of Miss Du Cuique, crying out, "Lin Dang, Lin Dang..." (One might ask: why was Lin Dang the fatal victim here?) It was because Jia Lam was getting closer to answers in her investigation. Du Cuique, wearing a deceptively sweet expression, spotted Jia Lam’s silhouette passing by the window curtains. She realizes she is facing a rival worthy of her mettle. Jia Lam discusses the matter with Nanke, specifically the mention of Lin Jin Qi’s bath time—a detail Du Cuique had brought up. She recalls how he had pretended to bathe by splashing hot water into the tub without actually getting in. But how did she know the schedule? Jia Lam explains her theory to Nanke: this is no ordinary illness, but a case of poisoning via the bathwater—an element that is rarely guarded, unlike the food. (She hands him the letter she wrote to her parents, letting them know she is safe and well.) But before that, she retched in agony upon seeing Lan Dan die.In a moment of hopelessness, the three maids—friends supporting one another through this tragedy—interlace their hands. One of them says, "We are merely maids; there is nothing we can do to change this." That is when Jia Lam, fire in her eyes, declares, "We *can* do something—so that everyone, from the groups we care about, can realize their dreams; they all still have so much life ahead of them." Lin Jin Qi is due to arrive tomorrow; they wait with renewed hope. But can YuChan hold on for another day? And what of Lin Jin Qi’s mother? She embraces her youngest daughter, who is ill; with a feverish gaze, the mother rests her head on the pillow, looking at her child.Lin Jin Qi speaks to the lieutenant—a simple, sincere man—who had once confronted him with accusations of a crime; they are now amidst a leafy hideout. Lin Jin Qi’s voice rings out above the commotion: "You are a brother I will count on for the rest of my life." He says this to the soldier who did not back down when the unthinkable mission they were to carry out in the forest was revealed. (Providentially—or perhaps prophetically—he said this not to Du Zheng, but to this brave, loyal, ordinary man). Yet, Du Zheng displays conflicting, contradictory expressions throughout this episode, appearing as though he wants to flee the situation. He claims he lacks a weapon; LJQ replies, "Here is a weapon." He says he lacks the proper attire and must go back to fetch it; LJQ replies, "Here is the attire." "Watch my back," Lin Jin Qi tells Du Zheng. Again, that look from Du Zheng. And fellow soldiers patting him on the back. (But do all these loyal figures realize they might be dealing with an enemy disguised as a lamb?)The battle in the forest involves three groups. Our heroic group aims to rescue the commander—the Marquis—who is facing relentless assassination attempts. In slow motion, they seem to fly as they leap over one another with swords and spears amidst the forest trees. Lin Jin Qi soars the highest, rising above the rest. And now, at the end of the episode, when a true friend shouts, "Lin Jin Qi, watch your back!"—how will our hero get out of this? Let's find out in Episode 18.

A Snake Hiding in the Shadows

Hidden within a cave on the grounds of the Lin estate, a couple was concealed: Xiu Wan (Lin Jin Qi’s sister) and Du Zheng (brother of Miss Du Cui Que). Du Zheng was making advances on Xiu Wan, who found herself unable to break free from him. However, her observant sister, Xiu Rui, was watching from an opening high above the cave; the scene alarmed and worried her, as she found both Du Zheng and Du Cui Que highly suspicious. She rushed away, and to put a stop to the young man's advances on her sister, she instructed her maid to mimic the sound of barking dogs. Hearing this, the couple quickly composed themselves and fled. Du Zheng later met his sister, Du Cui Que, on the lake bridge, all while Xiu Rui watched them closely and with suspicion. Suddenly, she ran into her sister Xiu Wan; the two exchanged excuses and deflected questions about what they had been doing there, effectively acting as if nothing had happened. Xiu Wan even defended Du Zheng regarding another matter Xiu Rui raised concerning the illness spreading through the household. This episode also features moments between Lin Jin Qi and Jia Lam: she oversaw his bath time, and he looked happy and at ease in her company. He also asked her to stay and listen to the alarming account his sister Xiu Rui was about to share. As Xiu Rui put it: "I saw something I shouldn't have." But before she could recount it, disaster struck the household. Due to the spreading illness, the estate was blockaded by a garrison of soldiers from another powerful family. A servant climbed onto the roof to investigate and was shot dead by an arrow. The estate was sealed off by the soldiers. Fortunately, however, Lin Jin Qi had already left the mansion before this happened to visit the Marquis—that commander... ...who became his friend. They discuss the assassination attempt the Marquis survived and mention that Lin Jin Qi will soon be the next target. I didn't quite understand Miss Du Cui Que's intentions within the manor. She becomes upset upon learning that Lin Jin Qi is safe outside, free to intervene more effectively to resolve the crisis engulfing the entire family. (She is revealing herself to be a calculating, venomous snake). One of Lin Jin Qi's brothers, along with Housekeeper Han and Jia Lan, has been tasked with handling the situation inside the manor until Lin Jin Qi returns. Gate after gate is being locked shut with heavy chains. How will this be resolved? (We shall see in Episode 17).

A Marriage Proposal from a Worthy Suitor

When Jia Lan finished her theatrical performance—having enacted that moving story for the soldiers—everyone applauded, including the Marquis (who was also the commander) and Lin Jin Qi. The Marquis spoke to Lin Jin Qi and hinted that he wished to marry this exceptional maidservant. He asked, "Can you give her to me?" Lin Jin Qi gave him a look—one that signaled refusal, though subtly masked—and then offered a flimsy excuse to avoid handing Jia Lan over to the gallant soldier. The soldier glimpsed the real reason behind Lin Jin Qi's refusal in his eyes. He smiled inwardly, as if to say, "You can't fool me, Lin Jin Qi." The commander had told Lin Jin Qi that he had lost his wife and now had an 11-year-old daughter who needed a mother. Lin Jin Qi promptly offered a solution: her sister Xiu Wan was available. As Lin Jin Qi and Jia Lan walked away from the commander to head home, a beautiful, poetic scene unfolded. His possessive gaze upon her—however veiled—hinted at a magical connection beginning to form between them. Walking at sunset, one following the other, the camera captured the pair silhouetted against the sun; Lin Jin Qi’s large strides across the earth moved in rhythm with Jia Lan’s steps. Upon returning home, Lin Jin Qi proposed this solution regarding Xiu Wan—whom she believed would be inconsolable without her romantic match. When he informed his mother and aunt that the 32-year-old commander wished to marry the young woman, they were delighted; however, in that era, a 32-year-old man was considered old, and they immediately implied that Xiu Wan would not be pleased—even though the two older women, Lin Jin Qi’s mother and aunt, undoubtedly saw him as a worthy match. Xiu Wan, along with her sisters and Miss Du Cui Que, had overheard everything from behind the door. Devastated, Xiu Wan wanted to storm in and pick a fight, but Cui Que led her away—likely to find a solution. Xiu Wan soon declared, "I don't want to marry an old man." Xiu Lai, the observant sister, watched from the sidelines; it remains unclear whether her expression stemmed from her own love for the Marquis or from distress over her sister's unhappiness. Her thoughts often seemed enigmatic. Yu Chan fell seriously ill, developing a skin rash, and Jia Lan quickly sought help from Lin Jin Qi, who agreed to provide the family physician—who was currently attending to his sister... ...the younger one, who was also suffering from some minor itching. In this episode, it seems their health issues have been resolved—we’ll see if that holds true in the next one. However, the observant sister’s gaze—directed at Miss Du Cui, then at the lake, and finally at her own sister—was enigmatic. I can’t tell if she suspects something regarding the lake or if it’s just her usual suspicion of Du Cui (which is well-founded). So, that’s the end of this episode (and we’ll see what Episode 16 has in store).

A rescue achieved through a joint effort.

The girl weeping over her lost suitor appears inconsolable; however, upon meeting a young man by the lake and speaking with his sister, she discovers that her true suitor—the one she had chosen—was not lost after all. For her, losing meant gaining, whereas gaining would have meant losing. We shall see in future episodes if that truly holds true. Our elegant general, a man of great ideals and courage, has been ensnared by fate and dragged into a dungeon, despite having committed no crime. His sister/cousin stands firm in his defense, refusing to let them take him away. Lin Jin Qi asks the commander for permission to speak to her and tells her, "I will get out of here. And remember: I always keep my promises." While she is in the dungeon, a friend arrives and leaves her some supplies. The fake cotton merchant had killed himself and implicated Lin Jin Qi in the process—but this is nothing the drama's smartest girl can't help resolve. Lin Jin Qi had anticipated this and left a letter for her to deliver to the Marquis (a young commander who is very hard to convince). Yuchan and Jia Lam positioned themselves by the roadside and sang a deeply meaningful folk song that made the commander and his soldiers stop to listen. Yuchan stepped forward to deliver the letter; the general was about to turn away, but Jia Lam’s voice—incisive, authoritative, and clearly audible—rang out and convinced him. After reading the letter, the general spoke with Lin Jin Qi; upon hearing her arguments, he inspected the warehouse, found the spoiled straw, and discovered the true source of the problem, thereby exonerating Lin Jin Qi. At home, the young general acts like a mere boy when greeted warmly and affectionately by his mother. However, instead of returning to speak with his grandfather and father, Lin Jin Qi—upon learning that Jia Lam and Yuchan have not yet returned—declares in a strong, energetic, commanding voice that he will go fetch them from the barracks. His friend, a subordinate soldier, is also worried about Yuchan, as night has already fallen. A fierce will to survive brings us closer together

Jia Lan finds herself in mortal danger while investigating the case of the spoiled wool in the soldiers' coats. Clever and cunning, she poisons the water of the fierce guard dogs and enters the seamstress's house, spinning a tale about a deceased husband and a shipment of cotton for sale at a bargain price. However, as she exits, followed by the man under investigation, he spots the unconscious dogs and realizes something is amiss. He holds his sword to Jia Lan's throat; he knows she is connected to Commander Lin's soldiers. Jia Lan stabs the villain in the leg with a hidden needle. Lin Jin Qi and Jia Lan rush toward each other; their hands touch and clasp.he flung her behind him. Terrified and with blood on her neck, she hides behind a flower pot. A fierce battle ensues—swords clashing, punches thrown, and martial arts maneuvers—and though Lin Jin Qi subdues his adversary, he fails to get the answers he seeks; the villain, even given the chance to live, chooses death by his own sword. While examining the corpse in the morgue, Lin Jin Qi notices calluses on the man's feet and hands, leading him to realize a connection involving the surname "Wakuku" (from Japan) and the location's year-round need for cotton. This will be the next step in the investigation. Earlier in the episode, Jia Lan and Lin Jin Qi had a conversation revealing a shared trait—a determination to do whatever it takes to survive—as they had both endured similar experiences. Later, a subordinate soldier and friend of Lin Jin Qi draws a comparison: "I saw the same look in Jia Lan's eyes that I see in Lin Jin Qi's." When another soldier asks, "What look?" he replies, "The fierce look of someone who gives everything to survive." Suddenly, Lin Jin Qi arrives and overhears the conversation, causing the men to quickly compose themselves. As Jia Lam recovered at home, Lin Jin Qi told her, “I won’t inform your country about your injury” (“that’s what I did during the war; I didn’t want to cause my mother worry, and I know you feel the same way”). The other girl—a maid and friend of Jia Lam—expressed her gratitude to Jia Lam for sparing her from a forced marriage; her family had intended to sell her off, but the money the maids earned from the successful investigation into the Cuíque flower changed that. A tear of joy fell, and they went to sleep, united by their friendship and gratitude. (Now, let’s see what Episode 14 has in store for us.)

This young general was slandered, accused of something he did not do. Confronted by an enraged, accusatory mob, he risked his life to face them. He conducted himself with both composure and conviction. He addressed them: "My soldiers, look at this scar; I earned it in battle fighting alongside you. I saved your lives, and you saved mine. What happened today wounds my soul just as it does yours. The deaths of the two soldiers who perished will not be forgotten; we will investigate and find an explanation. I will not rest until that happens." (These were not his exact words, but they capture the meaning and essence of the episode.) Because of this incident—this slander (likely orchestrated by someone lurking in the shadows)—his female relative was unable to get married. His aunt tearfully recounted the situation, yet upon hearing the alleged cause, she did not blame her nephew; she knew he was innocent. Who had put that tainted straw into the soldiers' coats, causing their deaths? One of the soldiers—likely the captain—pointed a finger at Lin Jin Qi and said, "You, in your expensive coat, still have the audacity to cheat us by using cheap straw in our coats? This is unacceptable." Lin Jin Qi’s response was chilling; he declared that if he failed to solve the case, his fate would be death (though he used much stronger language). They could not find the straw vendor responsible for the fraud, and there seemed to be no other avenue for investigation. But Jia Lan, that clever young woman, proposed an alternative: "What about the seamstress who made the coats? Perhaps she can give us some answers?" And so, that became the path they would take. Frustrated by the failure of her first attempt to make a move on Lin Jin Qi, Miss Du shrewdly questioned the maid—a friend of Jia Lan—and discovered that Jia Lan was behind her failure. (Just how many more traps will the girl's innocence provide for Miss Du to use against our heroine?) Miss Du offered to play chess with Lin Jin Qi, but he politely extricated himself from the situation (she didn't seem quite so clever in this instance). Yet, we know other opportunities for her to act will arise. (So, let’s find out what happens in Episode 13.)P.S.: The moment Jia Lan spent with her parents—revealing that the reward she had received was enough to buy freedom for all three of them—was truly joyful and fun. But even more interesting was her explanation: that money meant nothing to Madam Lin; securing their freedom wouldn't come down to cash, but rather to the Madam's own will. It would happen by carving out their own place. (A very hopeful prospect, isn't it? Let's look forward to seeing that unfold for our characters.)

Meeting new characters (a new journey)

A young woman—the sister of the soldier who saved Lin Jin Qi’s life—has arrived and will be living at the Lin family estate. She appears very accomplished, particularly in the art of creative paper-cutting. Lin Jin Qi’s mother spoke about her brother: She had aspired to a high-ranking court position but failed to secure it, and consequently, remained unmarried past the age of nineteen. Meanwhile, Lin Jin Qi continues his journey of facing his soldiers and proving his mettle; he shared some interesting information with a soldier who enjoys mocking him. Within the Lin household, we are introduced to Lin Jin Qi’s four sisters—though they haven't formally introduced themselves yet (we know who they are thanks to the trailers). Lin Jin Qi shared a delightful lunch with his mother—eating with such gusto that he looked like a child—accompanied by the soldier who had saved his life; his mother remains deeply grateful and will not forget that act of heroism. Jia Lan and the other maids underwent an assessment of their work skills. The funniest and most lighthearted among them revealed her culinary talents and was assigned to assist Miss Du—the newly arrived sister of Lin Jin Qi’s friend. Jia Lan quickly demonstrated her aptitude with books, though she was careful to mention that her writing wasn't particularly good (hard to believe; perhaps she didn't want to appear *too* skilled, as her old excuse about learning from a monk via sutras would no longer be convincing). Lin Jin Qi also spoke with the head maid—their interaction revealed a warm, friendly bond, akin to a long-standing friendship; she even remarked that he remained the same caring and kind person he had always been. This episode also featured happy moments for Jia Lan and her fellow maids during a cultural and folk festival; the Lin estate seems to be a place of great joy. Finally, Lin Jin Qi entered the room carrying narcissus flowers that someone had asked to be delivered. And at that moment,Lin Jin Qi’s grandfather revealed that Lin Jin Qi is not the uneducated man his father once described (“he became a soldier because he wasn't good at his studies”). In fact, he had been an excellent student under his old teacher—his grandfather. He demonstrated that, despite having wielded a sword in battle, he still knows how to use a brush and write with beautiful calligraphy. Lin Jin Qi even quoted a lovely poem.“You taught me, Grandfather”: “In misfortune lies a blessing, and within a blessing, misfortune lies hidden.” “A loss can turn out to be a blessing.”His grandfather also mentioned, with a worried look, that the Zhao family had risen in the king's favor, becoming even more powerful. Someone seeking to curry favor with them might try to cause trouble for Lin Jin Qi. Yet, Lin Jin Qi appeared unconcerned, saying he knew this was bound to happen.Once again, we see foreshadowing of events likely to unfold in future episodes. (But now, I’m off to watch Episode 11.)

Episode 7: We finally meet (but don't know each other yet)A young woman is punished in the freezing cold and frost. Her friends' care brings her comfort—and warmth. Her reunion with her mother is sweet and heartwarming. The head of the household (Lin Jin Qi) makes her an offer she cannot refuse, given the fear of what might happen to her at the hands of the mistress. A couple lives in the shadows, hiding away; yet this time, Lin Jin Qi sees what is happening. He appears from behind the trees with a keen gaze, watching the strangely disguised figure climb the stairs. Our main couple still doesn't truly know each other. In this episode, they become accomplices in an investigation. (Where will this lead in the story?) I’m looking forward to the next episode, which I’m about to watch now.PS: And what about those red flowers on the tree? Why did Lin Jin Qi give some of the branches to the grandfather? And why did Xianlan stretch up, reaching out to touch a high branch? She also noticed that some branches had been cut recently. (Did she realize it was Lin Jin Qi?) I’m still really enjoying this drama.

If I recall correctly, this is the first time the two protagonists—master and maid—have been in such close proximity; they are in the same room, and she looks terrified. The wife is literally risking her neck—not with just one lover, but two; honestly, it seems like she *wants* to get caught. The first wife’s courtyard is a hotbed of envy and underhanded schemes among the maids—some quite innocent, others more calculating. The husband—the protagonist—is hunting for evidence against his wife; it is clear he wants to get rid of her, and he will almost certainly succeed. We’ll see what happens tomorrow. Every steps, every movement , every single word, Lan Xiang has to be ten steps ahead of her master. I felt her fear and it was captured on screen. That ink stamp scene had a high degree of suspense and her revealing the arm was so compelling. Hope the two of her partners will come out alive.Now waiting and watching how she will navigate through these dangerous situations…every moment seems like a trap🥲.
