I feel a sense of satisfaction in episode 19 when they did not pull a cliché damsel in distress plot to Gu Jin Zhao on that horse. I honestly thought someone was going to save her but no, she saved herself in such a cool girl way too. I also love how Chen Yan Yun gave her time to deal with it herself and also stayed put because of the situation. Then, he smiled proudly seeing his girl able to control his horse. I feel so satisfied. After much cliché and obviously intentional arcs in the previous episodes, these two episodes feel especially satisfying.

EPISODE 18 DADDY CHEN AND LITTLE MS BADASS JINZHAO

OH MY LAWD THAT SCENE WHEN SANYE RUSHED TO JINZHAO THINKING SHE’s LEAVING TO SHANXI WAS JUST PURE EYE FCKING.

THE WAY OUR ZHAOZHAO SCANS THROUGH HIS FACIAL FEATURES AND ADAMS APPLE. THE WAY DADDY CHEN INVADES HER SPACE AND SHE WAS CAUGHT OFF GUARD. THE WAY HE SORT OF CHALLENGES AND TEASES HER INTO MAKING UP HER MIND (of course I believe he knows she feels the same way but was still in denial about it). My man is not getting no for an answer. He is not waiting any longer. The thought of her staying unmarried and moving to another city got him anxiously running to her and he was mad and annoyed.

What makes it frustrating is not the writing, but how realistic the system feels. The police and prosecutors care more about closing cases quickly than finding the real truth. Innocent before proven guilty barely exists here. Instead of proper deduction, profiling, or technology, they rely on violence and forced confessions as if pain automatically equals honesty. The investigation feels so limited and misguided that it’s hard to watch at times.

Episode 7

I don’t like the reveal in episode 7. It kind of killed the excitement of guessing the culprit right when the story was building momentum. I’m also surprised they chose to reveal the culprit this early. It feels like the next episodes will focus more on the failed chase between the authorities and the killer rather than the mystery itself. Especially since it’s already obvious that the full truth only comes out years later. I feel like the drama just wants to frustrate us with its flawed and outdated investigations.
