Ok, so it's quite complicated. A lot of this story stems from misunderstandings in their first life that just leads to more and more in the second and then third life.
So Bulgasal Sang Un and Bulgasal Hwal (1st life) were a couple who lived together in their cave. One day these two kids *(1st life Shi Ho and DoYoon) get left in their cave, Bulgasal Sang Un saves them and wants to watch over them as they grow up. Bulgasal Hwal meanwhile thinks she has abandoned him and doesn't know she is going to come back. Then Bulgasal Sang Un gets framed by Ok Eul Tae who murdered his brother out of jealousy. The father then attacks Bulgasal Sang Un, Bulgasal Hwal turns up and takes revenge on the village and curses Sang Un's protected children and the father of Ok Eul Tae. He then steals Ok Eul Tae's soul, making Ok Eul Tae into a half Bulgasal and tells him to make him a Bulgasal in the next life so that he can take revenge on all of them again and find his wife. But of course, Hwal is born without those memories, only with the knowledge that he has been cursed by Bulgasal, he doesn't realise he made those curses himself.
Meanwhile, Ok Eul Tae doesn't want to become human again, and has some weird obsession with Hwal and is determined to keep Bulgasal wife and husband apart. So he creates this set up scene, grows out his hair and wears red to trick Hwal into believing that Bulgasal Sang Un has killed his wife and son. But then Bulgasal Sang Un appears and she believes Hwal has acted on his past life threats and killed her children again, so she kills him, and, I think, accidentally steals his soul because she looks quite taken aback when his soul goes into her body. Hwal becomes Bulgasal and kills her (as a human) as an act of perceived revenge, she says: "What have you done? You have created more bad karma. You have brought upon another retribution. I despise you." (Which is what he had said to her 500 years earlier). Hwal is left confused and angry.
According to a later account by Ok Eul Tae, he says that he bumped into Bulgasal Sang Un in her cave once and she had waited for Hwal for 500 years but he never came back until he was reborn and lived there as a child. So she also felt betrayed and abandoned by him... Ultimately, they manage to clear up the misunderstandings and become united in the present life and Hwal who had then come to understand humanity and then sacrifices himself to save everyone from the curses of his own creation, thus earning the gift of a human reincarnation so they can finally be together again.
The romance was central to the whole plot, it was the cause of the whole story. Also, Asian dramas in general tend to be focused on romance... I haven't watched a single Asian drama that didn't have some romance lol.
OK Eul-Tae was obsessed with Hwal (definitely some gay crush vibes) and remaining as a Bulgasal, which is why he begged in the final episode to not become human again.
Ok Eul-Tae intentionally created the scene where Hwal would find his family dead, and Sang-Un would misunderstand him based on his behaviour in his last life as a Bulgasal. That way he could keep them apart with hatred, misunderstanding and fear.
Enjoyed it, last episode was the best for me. I'm left with just 1 question though .. why was her twin sister…
Yes, that was unclear... I'm not sure either. What I gathered was that the soul divided in two and she remembered everything, but when she died she said "This was my last chance." (To reincarnate). So I'm really not sure.
Btw you better put your comment as a spoiler though, and you must have accidentally posted the same thing twice.
