It's been ages since I watched it, but I'm pretty sure it has a happy ending.

No, I haven't. I think I'm going to wait until it's over and then maybe binge-watch it :D

Oh, definitely both, I think. Her research with clams(?) is instructive, I think. Like, she does it because she wants to help revive Kesennuma somehow. But if it's just a sense of duty that motivates her, she can easily just help out with family business. But she doesn't--she took the harder route, which might not bear fruit until decades in the future, against her elders' objection (ie. They always buy clam babies somewhere else. Why bother doing it from scratch themselves?). You don't do that kind of thing unless you truly love the work and the place.

Quite a few of Japanese movies were more than willing to tackle Japanese wartime atrocities (including human experimentation, wartime cannibalism, sexual slavery). But I do think that it's mostly older movies that do so--maybe because some of the filmmakers/screenwriters were either conscripted during WWII or grew up during that time, so they had a clearer perspective of those atrocities, and they knew firsthand how shitty the militarism and the fascism of that time.

^This. Those are melodramas, not makjang. I know I'm being petty and pedantic, but it irks me when people label stuff "makjang" just because those dramas have some melodramatic elements.

Weird, right? Do I expect fansubbers to release their subs faster? Sure I do. But it's not like they have any obligation to. They're not even paid for it. Some people's sense of entitlement is so baffling.

Oh, and for people who are complaining about this stuff, you know that there are translators and subbers out there who accept commissioned work, right? If you want a complete set of subs, to be available and finished within a time frame, you can always reach out to them and pay them for their work.

Thanks for the subs and the heads-up about the original subber. Speaking of which, do you have a Subscene account? If you do, it might be a good idea to upload your subs there too, in case there are people who might need the subs and are not aware about the existence of MDL.

I'm currently watching another asadora, along with this, and it makes me realize just how good the writing is in this drama.

I know asadora is all about optimism and positivity, but another thing that Okaeri Mone does fantastically is that it takes seriously the struggles faced by the main character and people around her. You can't just chase away trauma and survivor's guilt with positivity, and sometimes even continual support from family and friends is still not enough. And no matter how much you love a person, no matter how happy you are when they're excitedly chasing their dreams, it doesn't lessen the sadness that you feel for having to part with them.

The screenwriter understood all of that, and I'm grateful for that.
